Type B Voucher on Code-share Flight
 

Currently, I have four $150 type B vouchers from my last VDB. My girlfriend is coming to visit me in LA from Nagoya, Japan over winter vacation, and I would like to let her use the vouchers. I noticed that vouchers are only good for UA metal flights. However, there is only one way to travel from NGO to LAX, which is flight 830/831 via SFO. And the flights are already full for both ways (12/25 and 12/31) at this moment. I did a search on UAL.com, and all the itineraries include partial code-share flights with NH (via NRT). Is there any chance for me to use the vouchers with itineraries? If not, what is the best way for me to do? Fly from KIX instead (two hours train ride from NGO)? I appreciate if you can enlighten me on this issue. Thanks again.

IIRC (and I do not have a voucher in front of me)... It says UA operated flights only (which I believe means that code shares are excluded).

But YMMV.

I read somewhere from this website that there are ways to bypass the rule by purchasing a refundable ticket and then change the itinerary. Is there any truth to this?

That's all you have to do! Just buy a flexible UA ticket, then exchange it for the one you want.

Also, IME a flexable ticket will probably be FAR more then the value of the voucher. But again, YMMV.

Ok, so let's say I use $200 in type B VDB travel credits to purchase a refundable res for $335 on UA metal. Can I exchange it for 2 reservations of $144 each involving USair segments? How would the difference be handled? Could I go ahead and make a 3rd rez and pay a little more? How would I do this?

The reason I ask is I am requalifying by segments once again, and I am needing about 15 segments due a few trip cancellations. I found a fare out of ORD that has UA and US metal for $23 per segment, which is great! I have to book 2 roundtrips involving 6 segments each, plus my MCO-IAD-ORD to get there and ORD-IAD-MCO back, which should give me 101 segments this year. So this is pretty important and I am trying to keep the effect on my wallet as minimal as possible.

I managed to book a couple of AC operated UA coded flights a couple of times. Maybe I was just lucky. :p

For LH operated feeders within Europe the vouchers can be used, as long as the TATL is on UA metal. However UA in the US did not know about this exception.
Got tickets issued involving LH Flights to FRA / LHR / MUC using vouchers without any problems via BRU airport counter and Poland callcenter.

A similar situation might exist in Japan. So it might be worth to ask a local UA agent in Japan.

Well, it was a total disaster. I ended up not being able to do but one before the agent caught on. She initially told me that since it was within 24 hours that I wanted to change it, that it HAD to be refunded to the card. I knew that was bullsh.. so I fought it. She then found the USair flight as a reason to not change it, citing that I was 'working the system.' Well duh... isn't that what mileage runners do? :p

But then she had the guts to CANCEL my reservation without my permission and she refunded my type B voucher as a type AB, I would have rather had the credit to use on UA flights than a type AB voucher.

Wish I had known that. I could have saved $30 and had intra Germany segments on my UA ticket. Can anyone confirm this in the US?

I received a type B voucher for vdb a few months ago, $600 because it was an international flight from Denver to Vancouver. I used $300 for a flight already and want to use the balace to book an international flight but I am concerned about one of the conditions stated on the voucher:
'valid for travel only on united airlines/united express only'

Two of the flights in my itinerary are by other airlines but have the united flight numbers. (example: Air Canada for United Airlines) Does that mean that I won't be able to apply this voucher? I have to go to the airport to complete the transaction. The first time I did it, the counter agent wasn't familiar with it and let my flights (that included one Air Canada segment) go through.

I have my reservation on hold and am really hoping I can do this.

Hope someone can help me.

Unfortunately can't use it for flights that aren't on UA metal, so the answer is no.

You can't use the voucher, but there is a work-around.

Use the voucher to buy a refundable United ticket.
Take the new ticket, and use THAT toward the ticket you want.

I found a couple of flights to replace the share airline segments but can't seem to get them by using the website. Does anybody know how to 'plug
in' flights and see what fare you can get? Can the counter agents do that?

Not sure what you mean--so I buy a ticket that is exactly $300 worth (which is how much the travel voucher is worth)? Would the counter agent know what I'm talking about?
