Okay, I went ahead and made a reservation on the itinerary I wanted even though I knew that two segments were definitely codeshares. I had to go to the airport here (YVR) to do the ticket. And there was one agent only.

So I give him the reservation locator and tell him I want to buy this ticket and then I slide over the travel vouchers. He reads it quickly and then says, 'ah, sorry, you can't use this because one of your segments is Air Canada.' So I said, 'Really? Can I fly from JFK via two united flights as opposed to the one air Canada?' and I give him a paper where I had jotted the possible combinations via SFO (that I couldn't get myself on the computer).

He says, 'Sure!' And then after that he is finding more and more combinations that I hadn't even found myself. We finally decided on JFK-DEN-YVR. So then he proceeds to try and ticket me. I'm waiting there for a long time and I feel guilty because there are some first class passengers who are majorly pissed off that he is taking so long with me (they yelled over to him!). I asked him if he wanted to help them first but he said no.

So by this time, it's a good 20 minutes and he still can't seem to complete it. He doesn't ask anybody to come over to see what is wrong. He had to enter it many many times and it kept telling him to do it over. Finally, he just gave up and did it with miscellaneous instead of the voucher.

So it worked...didn't have to buy a fully refundable ticket. So I'm so happily looking forward to my trip! Many thanks to this UA agent who went the extra mile for me even under the pressure of the first class passenger!!

I tried the refundable thing with USair flights. It did not work and all it did was get my account audited. I know because they called me about an incorrectly exchanged ticket the day after I tried and told me, "during an audit of your account..." The lady at MCO told me to quit scamming the airline. :td: It's BS that a type B voucher cannot be used on codeshare.

They audited your account the day after you had 'tried' or was able to exchange it? What would have tipped them off??
So does this mean that there is a possibility that the airline accountants will come knocking on my door, too??

It may be disappointing but it's not "BS." It's the airline's voucher; they can set the rules however they want. Indeed, if this is a refare voucher one should be lucky to even have it, since most airlines AFAIK do not have a "guaranteed airfare rule" like UA does. Also, UA has to pay the other airline for your seat on a codeshare flight... why should they then allow you to use a voucher that denies them the revenue that they'll have to pay out to the other airline?

Would I like to be able to use a Type B voucher on a codeshare? Absolutely. Am I disappointed that I can't? Yes. Do I think it's "BS?" Not at all.

Got tickets issued involving LH Flights to FRA / LHR / MUC using vouchers without any problems via BRU airport counter and Poland callcenter.

A similar situation might exist in Japan. So it might be worth to ask a local UA agent in Japan.

Thomas

Can anyone confirm this?
I am looking for a trip to FCO but return from FRA with an intra EU connection on LH. I called 1K line to book using type B voucher but no dice. As Thomas suggested, how can I book it through EU agent as I am in US? Or anyone successfully booked with US agent?
Thanks!
