Often times you cannot re-fare online. You have to call CSR to re-fare.

This thread has been very useful. I never even knew that one could re-fare. Just thought you were screwed if you bought when the fares were expensive.

I want to see what people thought about flights to europe in April going through UA SFO-FRA on UA 900. The fares are around $1300-1500 in economy. That is pretty expensive. They are $800 in March, which is reasonable. Do you know if the April $1500 fares are only because it is 4 months away, and March is only 3 months away? Or is it because April is the beginnig of "peak" travel season to Europe, whereas march is not, and the april fares will probably not go down much below $1500?

Thanks.

I can't answer this question, but note that Easter holiday travel might affect the April fares. On the other hand, it's not crazy to buy and watch for a price drop.

On Jan. 5 I bit the bullet and purchased outrageously expensive upgradeable tix ORD-KUL for a trip we must make in May. Had to call today about a schedule change and asked what the fare was now. Whoosh! We're getting 2 $600 vouchers...which we'll use up pretty quickly. United gets the use of my money for a while, in exchange for putting me higher on the waitlist.

Maybe you'll get lucky too...[and just to report -- I had to mail in my paper tickets to get this re-fared, and it worked, with the protection of Priority Mail to the street address!! Refund TO CREDIT CARD, it turns out (because international, I think), and replacement paper tickets received within 10 biz days]

Can you combine these vouchers?

I just refared for $100! But I did it on two PNR's, $50 each. Can I combine these two, or do I have to use $50 respectively on each person?

Also, if the fare goes down some more, and I re-fare again (say I get another $50 each), can I apply all the vouchers for the same person for a new flight, or do I have to use a single voucher for a single flight (resulting in using one voucher per flight only)?

Thanks.

Refare vouchers are in the name of the passenger, regardless of the number of PNRs.

The rules as I last saw them say you can use up to three Type B vouchers for a single booking (though I've gotten them to use more).

But, they are transferable with certain conditions, so you can use vouchers with different names for the same itinerary as long as you meet those conditions. (I've used my wife's vouchers for my itinerary, for example.)

I haven't seen any rule that points to a limit of three. Rather, AFAIK the "limit" of three is simply because the computer screen only shows 3 fields to enter the voucher numbers. IIRC, agents can get the computer to show more fields and/or can simply enter a total voucher amount into the fields rather than entering the vouchers individually. (I, too, have once used more than 3 vouchers for a single itinerary.)

I had an RCC agent bring up a document and show it to me (this was last August). Of course, she then proceeded to allow me to use 5 per ticket...

Now for a question. We all know that you need to be very careful when refaring an upgraded itinerary. But what about a waitlisted itinerary? We have an SFO-IAD-SFO itinerary in April that dropped $50 per, but all upgrades are currently waitlisted. Does refaring a waitlisted flight automatically drop your waitlist position, or can a good agent maintain the position while refaring?

How do you find out what these conditions are?

Reading the voucher is a good place to start...

Boy would I like a definitive answer to that!! I have been assured by the telephone TAs that we don't lose our spot on the waitlist, but don't know that I believe it.

That said, we did refare ORD-LAX-OGG-SFO-ORD for Dec/Jan and still got our upgrades as 1Ps, but it was at least a couple of months out. However, if our ORD-SIN-ORD for May drops anymore, I'm not sure I want to risk it. I admit the $600 per pax drop early January was too juicy to resist (and that's when I got the assurance there would be no change on the waitlist), though we may rue it if in Y for that trip...

Yup. The T&Cs are printed on the second page of the refare voucher. They specifically state that if the voucher is over $25, the person named on the voucher must be present. In practice, that's not exactly true, e.g. with ticket-by-mail and especially if you share the same last name... but the rules of transferability are printed on the voucher.

That's what I was told as well, but I figured for $180 in vouchers it's worth the risk - especially since the flights are now both 2-class 763s.

I recently refared a flight for next month that went down about $36.

It took just a few minutes and the refund went right to my credit card.

I could not do it on .bomb.

and if you just have yapta.com track your flights for you, you don't have to do any work. when the price drops, you get an e-mail, and then you make the call. you don't have to keep checking each day.
