I agree with Roger. It irks me when threads take on these tones – intentional or not. What’s the pont?

I think that it's a bit of an idealization of the airline, if not of oneself:
you know, "I don't think anyone stupider than me should fly United."
Sometimes I feel the same way, especially when I'm in Chicago.

a) Late arrival and tight connection and gate agent announces "Would Mr. Wimpy meet the agent at the door"
b) Gate agent "We'd like to invite Mr. Wimpy to board"
c) RCC announcement "Can Mr. Wimpy come to the desk. First class has now checked in full"

I much prefer a low key approach.

Yep, Wimpy simply approached the back of the line (this was pre-red carpet super special move up front boarding) and assimilated into the masses.

I also agree with Wimpy that it can be a bit much when the agents page you up specifically by name. Once at ORD waiting for a UX flight, I was paged up to the gate just so that they could let me walk down to the itty bitty plane first. Not necessary at all. I was just glad that my ORD-MSN flight wasn't cancelled!
