Okay - I agree - casinos ARE of the devil! :D

I really like the UAL DEN concourse. Last year I did 14 segment in and out of there in 3 days chasing DYMTWTU credits. Everything went as smooth as glass.

DEN's wide open feel, I think, makes it feel like I'm walking forever. ORD or IAD is more cramped and I'm preoccupied with dodging people. Also maybe DEN's altitude makes people winded, or maybe it's psychological effect. I don't know, when I'm at DEN and walking from one end to another I get winded and sweaty too.

To the person who mentioned CID: not comparing the same thing. Small airports are usually going to be easier to navigate than large airports.

Brilliant attempts at sarcasm/humor/parody/satire are so often lost on those who elect to focus on the minutiae.

Let's not forget the ground-level location of the RCC in IAD, which IMHO, makes is the worst of all UAL hubs. The last time I actually tried to work in the business cubbies there, neither my cellphone nor my cell modem had any signal. Absurdity.
I'd take the DEN RCC's any day, with their great birds' eye views of the tarmac action.
I also agree that the perceptual distance of the DEN terminal may be greater than the actual distance - due to the width of the space. At least if you're in a rush and need to walk quickly (I NEVER run in airports unless it's for an upgraded international connection!), you can generally find a clear and straight pathway in which to move. And shuttles, trains, or busses aren't part of UAL connections!

UAL747fan Aug 5, 2007 12:26 pm

Yes, whenever we fly through DEN, we arrive at one end, and our enxt flight is on Express at the other end. It is quite a distance, some times we have tight connections. We will take one of those buggy things if we pass them and they are avaliable.

I agree there are many very good airports. The multi Billion dollar boondoggle called DIA is not one of them. Elevators (don’t people move in streams not batches?) Trains without options? Old Furniture? Garage Deficiencies? (limited access from garage to airport), UP and Downs all over the place? Multi Million failed Luggage system rusting in a field? No convenient Limited Time parking on ticketing level? Confusing Bi-latterly Symmetrical design. (So bad we need guides to help people find their way around)? No access to airport except by car or bus. No people mover from out lying parking. Leaky tent for a roof . No display of arriving flights at meeting point, just a noisy fountain. Very confusing arrival area. What is so good about all this?

Most locals also comment on its great distance from the city. :)

For us it's generally a fine airport in which to transfer or to spend a few hours when necessary with two RCCs and some not-bad food establishments. The new UX area is an incredible improvement over the old one, including those mini-baggage closets at the top of the jetway to claim your roll-aboard that we haven't seen elsewhere - a major improvement over lining up in the jetway and waiting for them to be handed in one at a time. ^

Yes, we've certainly had a few brisk walks with tight connections between mainline and UX flights. For us it compares very favorably to ORD, IAD, and LAX in regard to UA connections.

Of course we've rarely ever needed to go as far as the train and have originated flights out of DEN only a few times, most commonly after a VDB but I know feelings run high among a lot of you Denver folks and I understand why for the reasons you mention and the relatively long drive from downtown.

Yes, that darn "bi-latterly" (or bilateral if you please) symmetry. I guess the airport should have been built asymetrically - so it would be easier?

"So bad we need guides to help people find their way around" is disingenuous. DIA has guides as a nice touch - would you prefer that there be no volunteer guides anywhere? They're not there because it's hard to figure out - they're there because it's nice to have friendly guides around.

I dunno how you throw the automated baggage system into the mix - the vendor promised they'd done such a system before, only to learn later that they had lied. Oh well. So today you only get your checked bags 2 minutes after you arrive at baggage claim instead of 2 minutes before you arrive. A travesty, I know.

Trains without a walking option is a valid complaint...though if there WERE walking options, half this board would be kvetching about how long that walk would be. After a couple of notorious train glitches, the trains have been very reliable the last several years.

The tent roof leaks? Since when? Although I have seen plenty of stained ceiling tiles in the councourses, those are the councourses, not the main terminal.

If you prefer, say, ORD, where a connection from B concourse to C concourse is quite possible - and good luck making that in 30 minutes or less - then be my guest. Despite its flaws, it's MY airport, and you can stop bashing it any old time. :D:D:D

MikeBU Aug 5, 2007 11:32 pm

I never noticed the distances being a problem, but I sure did hate the fact that for being among the country's newest airport terminals,
1. There are next to no electrical outlets to be found
2. There isn't enough seating -- usually have to sit against the side of the moving walkway
3. Trains are not frequent enough, and seemed to randomly try to close doors before people had disembarked, let alone embarked
4. The only food past 10PM is serve inside the smoking lounge. Even that closes before the redeyes board.

Way2SJC Aug 5, 2007 11:38 pm

As in all airports, you have to be careful on how you book your connections. If you have an UA Express flight there will be cases that you could have to run the lenght of the concourse. If your trying to make a connection on another UA flight and the odds are pretty good it'll be a quick walk.

cblaisd Aug 5, 2007 11:40 pm

Count me as another one who enjoys DEN B very much.

You can get decent last-minute Christmas gifts there :D The food choices are not-bad. I can always find a place upstairs to sit and get some work done or read. The restrooms are decent. There's an Auntie Anne's pretzel place where I can get an almond pretzel with caramel dip. The RCC staff has always been very nice to me there. Even at the busiest time of the day, you are not clotted in with hordes of humanity. There are moving sidewalks ("Please look down!").

None of these things are true at ORD.

I always try to schedule a minimum of 90 minutes for a connection; 2 hours is better. The stress-o-meter is lower, and I can enjoy the concourse in a more leisurely way.

Some think I'm odd in this....
