Problems booking E+ seats

Need some expert help here. Just booked r/t OAK-DEN-SAT for 8/31 returning 9/4. Both husband and I are 2P and are traveling with our son and my sister. Tried to book all four of us in E+ - website shows lots of open E+ seats. Went through whole itinerary, chose E+ seats, hit purchase and got booking confirm that kicked all of us into E-. Called 2P line - was told all E+ seats booked so website must be wrong! I know united.com is not the best but could it actually show 22 available E+ seats when there aren't any? I told rep I wanted to hold for supervisor. After holding,he is now are saying that it can be done but that they have to split the reservation into 2 separate reservations. This whole process has taken about 30 minutes from being kicked out of united.com three times to holding for 20 minutes with call center. Do I really have to split reservations to get E+ seats for us all?

You get one non-elite per elite member on a pnr to get the E+ seats. It sounds like the RA is breaking you up into two PNRs so that all four can enjoy the pleasures of E+. ^ Don't worry, that's a good thing.

Unfortunately, yes. You can only get 1 additional E+ seat per reservation, so you and your husband will need to be on different reservations.

Are the non Premier members sitting next to one another? Just made a booking last week on 1 PRN for Wife(1K) Self(1K) and brother/sister inlaw (no status as yet) and had to sit one of them next to one of us . IE making sure that the non premier member was sitting next to 1K
Try asking the agent to do that ant it should work OK

Thanks everyone for your prompt replies! We went ahead and split the reservation so that each non premier flyer was with a premier flyer and got our E+ seats. One segment is the ExPlus plane - looking forward to checking it out.
