Does anyone know how the denied boarding compensation rules apply (if at all) to standby passengers. Go on DM list, get boarding pass, board plane, then removed before door closes -- this was UAX.

My uneducated guess would be it may depend on the reason for denied boarding. Was this really a denied boarding situation? Did they ask for volunteers? Was it a case of weight restriction or did a UGS show up at the last minute?

Unless you were on the DM list as a confirmed passenger waiting for a seat assignment, DB rules would not apply. Likely they gave away a late passenger (or late connection's) seat and then ejected you when that person showed up. Perfectly fair, IMHO.

Full scenario. Got on DM list as standby and mentioned that I came off a flight where I was upgraded to F by Region I certificate. Ten minutes later called up to desk and given boarding pass for F seat. (When put on DM list I was told there were two seats available in F) Was removed from that seat and four other persons boarded (two couples). There were three seats in coach available and the one F seat that I vacated. I could easily see one UGS trumping me, but four people (who were at the boarding gate at the same time I was)?
I think they just would have rather delt with one person (me) than split up the couples -- who seemed to be traveling together.
Talked with supervisor who "promised" a written explaination -- I'm now on supplemental oxygen for the breath-holding. :)

By definition a standby passenger is not considered having been denied boarding when not able to take a flight.

Here's an interesting situation. Suppose that there was exactly one person with a reservation and no seat, one standby, and exactly two volunteers who insisted on being bumped together or not at all. Would the airline take the two volunteers and put the other two on board?

Hard to say. Normally UA would not take a volunteer so that a standby could board. I'd say they would attempt to find someone else.

tods27: No, I recieved no seat on the standby flight. The next UAX flight was all coach.
