I used the RCC Wifi at ORD C17 for several hours a few weeks ago. I've never had a problem at any of them... I use a PC running XP.
|
Using my MacBook Pro, I have had no issues with Wifi at SFO, ORD, & DEN. Have used wifi as recently as last weekend.
|
i can't even get to the landing page.
|
I have seen issues with accessing certain DNS servers. Laptops with pre-configured DNS servers (such as OpenDNS or a specific corporate preferred DNS) seem to fail with TMobile/RCCs, Changing to Obtain DNS automatically seems to work better.

RCC number didn't work
I was in ORD C17 on Saturday. Club was fairly empty. My RCC number (stored in computer, not typed in) kept coming up as "invalid number" so I asked for a free Wifi card, which worked. There is obviously something wrong.

Ugh. It is "working" at the C18 RCC this afternoon, but extremely slowly. Speed test says ping time of >1 second, 30 Kbps down, 10 Kbps up. I think I hear the 56k modem screeching behind the bar  :p

It's not T-Mobile
T-Mobile doesn't have the best equipment everywhere and they didn't roll it out optimally everywhere either, but the biggest issue is that of capacity (bandwidth). UA has contracted for a specific amount, and T-Mobile has by and large delivered. Better connectivity will require more bandwidth, which in turns means a higher bill for UA. T-Mobile can deliver, but UA, as the customer, must ask them to.

I don't think it's really bandwidth -- the bandwidth is generally fine, even for a full club. The issue is the one or two users who hogs the bandwidth with videos, streaming, massive file sharing, etc., which in turn cripples the club. The equipment needs to monitor and throttle accordingly. I was in a full DEN RCC recently and the bandwidth was adequate. The club started thinning out, and after half an hour, ka-boom, the Internet was essentially unusable. Only thing I can think of was that someone came in and hogged it. |

If you have a smart phone with an unlimited data plan, consider http://tether.com . This will provide you an app (for a fee after a one week free trial; no credit card required for the trial) for your phone and laptop that will tether your laptop to your smartphone via USB or bluetooth. I would not recommend making a habit of it, as rumor has it that cell providers will treat "excessive" use as illegal tethering.

RCC WiFi Issues?
I want to know if it's me and my laptop or a general issue....
I get an IP from the T-Mobile WiFi and then no network access often. Sometimes I have to reboot. Flush DNS cache. I can waste upwards of an hour sometimes trying to connect. Anyone else have these issues? I did recently lose my connection and then overheard the woman behind me on her MacBook Pro say "oh crap the WiFi stopped working".... |
Seems like there are quite a few problems going on right now: http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/unite...n-ord-rcc.html

Was at DEN a few hours ago and am now in SFO and am not having any issues. Fact it seems faster than my last visit a few weeks ago.

simple solution
if you are an rcc member, do this and you will never have a problem
connect to the wifi, open a web browser and put in this URL https://service2.hotspot.t-mobile.com/unitedAuth it should be in your bookmarks This is the page you need to get to in order to login, if you try it from the tmo landing page it doesn't often work. |
