THE CONSUMER ELECTRONICS ASSOCIATION (CEA) TAKES INTERNATIONAL CES AIRPORT DELAY ISSUE TO CONGRESS:
Airport screening experience a focus of House Aviation Subcommittee hearing The delays caused by security lines on the final day of The International CES were raised repeatedly before Congress at today’s House Aviation Subcommittee hearing on the security of travel. Members of Congress used the CES travel delays to demonstrate the need to improve security procedures. Representatives Shelley Berkley (D-NV) and Jon Porter (R-NV) described how lengthy delays at McCarren International Airport harmfully impact CES and the Las Vegas economy. Rep. Berkely emphasized the frustration of CES attendees and exhibitors and quoted a flier distributed at CES that warned of three- to four-hour delays. Members of Congress requested that the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) work directly with CEA to ensure the airport delays experienced at the 2004 CES will not be repeated. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Again, we apologize for the airport delays at the 2004 International CES. We continue to work with the TSA, McCarran International Airport and Las Vegas authorities to ensure the most convenient possible experience for our attendees. Denied the FC stamp as a 1P in coach on Tuesday. Check in agent showed me a written directive that it is only for CONFIRMED FC and UGS customers. FC in LAS will soon be reduced to ORD flights only.
Didn't matter, as there was no line. Great LAS agent caught a config change and moved me from 10A to 9F, now the exit row with about 50" of leg room as it looks like they pulled an entire row between 8 and 9 for the E+ conversion. |

I will now have to go through those two cities if I can't get the non-stop to/from ORD. And IAD/LAS? What is that, almost 5 hours in Y? What were they thinking??!! |

FWIW - If you are familiar with the "C" and "D" security areas at McCarran, they are increasing the security area size by building a new "floor" across what is now open space above a portion of the baggage claim area. The security check area will be moved outward from its current location.
The existing passenger queue area will be expanded over the top of a portion of the South Baggage Claim area. I'm told there may be as many as 18-20 security checkpoints once it is complete but I have no idea of the target completion date. |
I am not sure that all UA flights out of SFO are going TED.
I am booked on a non-TED flight out of SFO in First Class. However, I only see two non-TED flights a day right now, so maybe the TED transition is being slowly phased in. Does TED offer Full "Y" fares? |
Do airlines add more flights during conventions? It's just not possible to double or triple, let alone 10x, the number of airline passengers, given the fixed number of seats on the planes.
Personally, I always make sure I depart from LAS very early (e.g., 7:00 AM) or very late (midnight). Never a long line. |
On UAL flights into Las Vegas there is now an announcement advising pax to be at the airport three hours prior to their return flight.
Not fun, but better than missing your flight. Unless you absolutely have to be there for the convention next January, I'd avoid it like the plague. Even if United and every other carrier added extra flights, it would not cure the TSA hassle. [This message has been edited by Sooner (edited Feb 13, 2004).] |
Received a reply from the TSA and the head of McCarran Airport Ops. Both were sorry for the long lines on Jan 11 (CES). TSA quoted a peak wait time of 2 hours and 11 minutes, and the head of Airport Ops quoted a peak wait time of 2.5 hours. Someone's fudging the numbers, 4-5 hours is more like it for that day!

I wouldn't count on the problem at McCarran D-gates being solved by next year. While the airport is busy expanding the area over baggage claims, they're also busy expanding the number of gates with another wing. If they double the passenger volume and double the screeners there's no improvement.
What really concerns me is TED. With no first class on TED flights, it's going to be impossible to avoid the lines by going thru the first class line. Today the lines were wrapped around the terminal again. A TSA screener said the wait time was probably around 3-4 hours. Met a few UA passengers in the sports bar that waited over 3 hours this morning. Also, ticketing told me that the airport management is screening the boarding passes more closely. Unless you have a confirmed FC upgrade no First Class stamp. UA's are risk of losing access to the FC line if 1k's are allowed thru. It's just a mess at that airport with no signs of improvement. What does it take to get a 1k line? [This message has been edited by fly4miles (edited Feb 16, 2004).] |
It would have been more of a surprise if there weren't long lines yesterday:
-- Major resort destination -- End of a 3 day holiday weekend -- Two major conventions -- Known airport congestion problems during these combinations Probably the same reason that you picked to visit Las Vegas during this time were the same ones that a hundred or so thousand other people chose, too. |
Again, we apologize for the airport delays at the 2004 International CES. We continue to work with the TSA, McCarran International Airport and Las Vegas authorities to ensure the most convenient possible experience for our attendees.
These guys must be clowns. We were there yesterday and waited 2 and 1/2 hours in a security line for a flight that was going to take less than an hour. This has been going on every time we fly into Vegas and it makes no difference convention, holiday or any other excuses they may use. Maybe if a big convention pulls out they will get serious. I feel sorry for all the airport businesses that must be losing money. Thousands are spending all their time in lines and not in the shops. Without a doubt, McCarran wins my vote as worst airport experience in the nation. |
