Developing Routings Using MPM

Booking an S class RT to LHR. Expedia provides the MPM. United.com expert mode provides the seat availability in S. For the same pre-tax fare, can I choose any routing within the MPM that has S class availability? And are actual miles used to calculate MPM, or the 500-mile MP segment minimum where applicable?

Thanks for replies.

The actual miles are used in the MPM calculation. You also need to check the routing for the fare, but usually you can connect through almost any United city as long as the stop is less than 24 hours. I would imagine that SFO-LAX-DEN-ORD-IAD-LHR would work. You also need to make sure that there is no limit for online transfers (that's the number of connections from United to United that you are permitted to make.) I think it will be unlimited as long as it's online United, but sometimes the fare rules will say the likes of 2 in each direction.

Don't forget that you can exceed the MPM by up to 25% by paying proportionately more (in 5% increments). So if the fare is really good, you can buy more of it at the really good price.

Thanks for replies. Is UX off limits? I can't route via SBA or BFL, even though it's within MPM and S space is available.

A couple of years ago a FlyerTalker was able to route a DFW-LGW trip thru LAX and SBA for an amazing mileage total at an equally amazing price. I doubt that UA prohibits routing with UX, but I could be wrong.

I would imagine that SBA or BFL are permitted. There is no restriction on using UAX, but you would probably not be permitted to connect twice in the same city. So you couldn't fly SFO-LAX-BFL-LAX-LHR.

Well, I can't get it to price out at the same pre-tax fare via these UX cities, even though S seats are available.
