Real basic '101' type question about MP

I've checked the UA site and also done a search here, but still can't figure this out...

With UA, say I buy an H Class fare LHR-SFO. Can I get a confirmed upgrade to business class (subj. to availability) at time of booking, or do I - since I've got no status - have to wait until 24hrs before departure?

Thanks

With a 1K SWU (regardless of your own status) you can upgrade WHEN you book IF NC/NF inventory exists. Or, you can waitlist if it does not.

Subject to availability, you can get a confirmed upgrade at booking with an SWU or miles on an H fare.

Thank you thank you thank you.

Not only has this answered my question, but has also given me the answer I wanted to hear!

On the same point, what fare bucket do the upgrades to J come out of, and is there any way to check availability?

Thanks

See Thread listing all known UA revenue and award booking codes and a summary of each one

Upgrades to business class come from I inventory.

You can check availability by calling UA or by searching for an award (free) seat at the United website. When searching for a saver award, all of the award codes will display. But it will only show flights for which there are saver awards -- and it's possible a flight without saver awards will have upgrade inventory, so this method is far from complete.

Unfortunately, I inventory doesn't show up online anywhere else that I'm aware of. http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/frown.gif (But would love to be corrected! http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/thumbsup.gif)

Just keep calling UA until you get an agent who will tell you how many pax are waitlisted for upgrades ahead of you.

The best way to check availability is per Ozstamps' thread where he outlines in detail everything. The most comprehensive report on breaking down fare classes that I have ever seen. http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/thumbsup.gif It's in UA forum not too far away.
