Risky Connection
I booked business award tickets for three of using UA mileage.
TUL to DEN (UA first class) DEN to LAX (UA first class) (leaving DEN at 7:40 am) LAX to SGN (stop in HKG for an hour or so) (United Polaris UA) Oroginally the layover in DEN is 58 min. United just changed the DEN to LAX flight time, which shrinked the layover in DEN to 42 min!!! I think this is a risky connection. If the TUL to DEN flight is delayed, we will miss the DEN to LAX. We have about 3 hr layover in LAX before the international segment. Note that there is another flight leaving DEN for LAX around 9:40 am, which should be fine to catch the interational segment in LAX (around 1 hr layover in LAX). What do you experts here think? The TUL to DEN is very risky and it is the very first flight out of TUL in the morning (6 am). TIA. |
If you miss the first DEN-LAX, UA will put you on the next DEN-LAX (assume it has space).
If you have UA status, you can try to do SDC on DEN-LAX, as soon as you board the TUL-DEN or if on TUL-DEN and running late, call / text UA and get a change to the later DEN-LAX. Assuming the 2nd DEN_LAX isn't completely sold out, you have a reasonable Plan B, just take action if things are going south. The connection is potentially makeable with an ontime arrival and depending on the connection terminals. Do you have any mobility issues? |

Early morning flights, in general, are least risky in terms of delays and missed connections.
DEN flights are all about banking, either a really short connection, or the opposite. Personally, as someone who does not like spending time at airports, I know which one I would choose. |
Would keep as booked, you might risk not being in J DEN-LAX, but with the later flight as an option in case of misconnect ... I'd do that. Early a.m. DEN is low risk

None of us has any mobility issues (12 yrs old daughter, husband, and I). Sorry what is SDC?? Husband and I are both premier silver now. Well, if the TUL to DEN is delayed and the next DEN to LAX has no space, I guess the whole trip is messed up. Taxiing in DEN airport is like 15 -20 min assuming everything is smooth. We sit in the first row on the TUL to DEN flight. The next flight (DEN to LAX) will not wait for us if we are running behind around 15 min.

Personally, I would rather have a tight connection in DEN than at LAX. The reason is simple: if you miss DEN-LAX, you have a shot to get onto the next one (albeit probably in economy). But if DEN-LAX is delayed, you’re in trouble. With the reduction of the connection time, you can probably get UA to move you proactively if you call — you may need to call a couple of times. But I’m not sure I’d do that unless there’s another routing that would make things better — e.g., TUL-IAH-LAX. If you ended up with 1 1/2 hours at both IAH and LAX, you’d be in ideal shape.

When I booked the ticket, UA did have the other option that I take the second DEN to LAX flight but in economy, but that would give us almost 3 hrs in DEN and then only like 1hr and 15 min in LAX. So I decided to go with shorter layover in DEN (originally 56 min.). So you recommend that I call before the trip to ask UA to move us to the next DEN to LAX flight? TIA.

That is exactly why I decided to take this flight, albeit the original layover was 56 min.

If it were me, I’d keep your original reservation. The first flight out of TUS is quite likely to arrive early and you’ll be the first off the aircraft. If something goes sideways, it’s better that it happen where there’s still a backup option.

You could ask for TUS-DEN-NRT-SGN, though this relies on NRT-SGN having business class award space and you getting a decent and sympathetic phone agent.

The expected taxi time is already included in the arrival estimate. In fact, it’s common for UA flights to arrive as much as 20-30 minutes early, when it turns out that they didn’t need as long of a taxi as they’d planned for.

1 - Check to see if there is a flight through IAH that equalizes the layovers — 1.5 hours in IAH and 1.5 in LAX would be borderline perfect. 2 - Check to see if TUL-DEN/IAH/ORD-NRT-SGN is available for three passengers as a business class award, regardless of price. This has the advantage of removing a stop (your LAX-SGN flight stops at HKG). 3 - Keep the current itinerary, hoping to be re-accommodated onto the next flight if I misconnect, and understanding that it might be in three Y middle seats. However, if after considering the options, you would prefer to go ahead and book the longer DEN / shorter LAX connection, then I would call and explain that you’re worried about the connection. Point out that it was originally 56 minutes and is now 42 minutes. (Actually, use the same script for any change you try to make). An agent may be willing to move you, without charging you any extra, due to the newly-tight connection. |
I have not seen any award availability for this route since United is focusing on promoting the new LAX-SGN route. That is why they have released a lot of seats on this specific route

Thanks for all the ideas, everyone!
Since United is heavily promoting on the newly launched LAX-SGN route, I have not seen any availability for the traditional routes to SGN like I did previous years (e.g., TUL-DEN-NRT-SGN or TUL-IAH-NRT-SGN etc.). I am not a fan of this newly route at all because we have to connect with two domestic hubs, which enhances changes of delays. This is the best I have been able to find for three of us leaving for SGN around June 23, 2026. I just called the United Premier line and asked if they can move us to the flight to LAX from DEN. I did not hold my breath but the agent was able to move us to the next flight with help from the other two departments. I was on hold for over an hour while she worked on it. And they also keep us on first class for the new DEN - LAX flight. So now 3 hr layover in DEN and 1h 18 min in LAX. I still prefer equal layover time for both but that is all available now. I will keep looking for better options though but my husband's fixed schedule as well as beach schedule in SGN, it is hard to move things around at the last minute. |

Search NRT-SGN availability on UA or ANA website? I beliveve that leg availabilty is the main challenege.

Search for NRT-SGN individually. If there's award availability for your entire party, UA can rebook you on any UA metal flights to NRT of your choosing before connecting onto NH for the last leg to SGN, regardless of whether those flights show up when you search TUL-SGN all the way.
