Does UA not serve drinks and pretzels after 10 PM?

Just took a SFO-ONT flight departing at 10:47 PM for which the FAs remained seated the entire time. At what time of night does UA cut beverage service? Scheduled duration of flight was 1h38m.

They don't. You had a bad group of FAs.

Data point: I’ve taken the late night SFO-ONT about 4 times this year. Zero snacks. However, I was offered water cups from the tray a couple times.

They are there for your safety

Was given snacks and water on a 40 minute flight, on another (US) airline, in coach.

You need to ask them how lazy they are going to be when you board. That will determine the pretzel probability.

What is the actual service cut off guideline?

docbert Aug 5, 2023 8:05 am

I'm sure they were expecting bad turbulence and thus decided not to do a service as a result.

Or at least, that's the excuse they used on my SFO-LAS a month or so back. Oddly enough the pilot didn't mention any possibility for turbulence, it was a smooth flight, and the seat-belt sign was off for most of the time at cruise.

Unfortunately this is not uncommon on these routes - depending on the crew. Some will do a full service, some just water, others nothing.

Five minutes before the FAs board.

scheduled time doesn't matter, but 363 miles is long enough for a drink service; minimally water in the back and full service in First. Unless there was an announcement there was (expected) weather en route.

I'd send a note to UA; the more they hear about their bad apples the better.

David

These kind of incidents are why I wasn't surprised about the purse/FA thread about that first class meal write up that was posted today.

Tired and just didn't care. I'm not sure whether to blame them or sympathize with them. Probably both. It's a low paying job, working for an employer that's trying to squeeze the last nickel out of everything, dealing with a flying public that is increasingly populated with complete nut jobs.

"Low paying job" pays 1-4x the US median income!

Hardly. The hourly rate is not bad at all, but they only get paid once the door is closed and not for all of their wait time etc. etc.

Generally, for most FAs ... their income is most certainly not approaching the median income level. A quick google search confirms that ;)

A lot of editorialization here, but according to the UA website, there are no pretzels or complimentary snacks on flights under 500 miles, and beverages only on request for flights under 300 miles. This flight appears to be in between the two. So a complaint about the lack of drinks might be valid, though one about the lack of snacks would not be. I had read snacks were coming back to the 300-500 range but the policy doesn't seem to be updated online.

I'd add that for a lot of folks on such a short flight that late at night, the noise of beverage service would be annoying and disruptive. If the FAs actually "remained seated" the whole time, versus just not doing a beverage service, seems there may have been a legitimate reason.
