For boarding? Yes, there's usually a sign stating such in the vicinity of the immediate boarding area. I'd be interested in finding out what actually happens if someone refuses the facial recognition, and how willing the GAs would be to do it the 'old fashioned' way, despite that specifically being an option of the displayed notice.

Was just told on boarding at IAD today when opting out as usual that the face scan was going to be mandatory starting in 2025. Anyone else hearing this or have an official source?

Boarding international flight at IAD - face recognition issue
Hello
When boarding an International flight home from Dulles (IAD)back to Ireland with United everyone had to step in front of a camera to board. I would say around a 100 people before me went ahead without any issues but when it came to my turn, the camera rejected the photo three times. I can’t remember what it said on the screen but the gate agents proceeded to manually verify my passport / boarding pass and nothing else was said Ive just been a bit concerned as to why this would happen and wonder if it’s normal for it not to work for some people? |

Reasons -- many, such as the quality of the photo on file, lighting issues, something distinctive about your face, some ethnicity issues (most related to lack of contrast of facial elements, ...). The technology is still not as good as TV shows claim but it will improve with time. Bottom line, I would not worry. Hopefully, the failure cases are being used to improve the system. As you note, they have a backup approach. It will not prevent boarding. |

It had never worked for me at SFO and IAD.

This biometric face recognition process was also used last week for GUM-ROR (Guam, USA to Koror, Palau) in lieu of boarding pass scanning. It went very smoothly and efficiently. :tu: 🇬🇺 🇵🇼
