From any recording of my likeness or the use of such for any purpose without my explicit consent.

Was just told on boarding at IAD today when opting out as usual that the face scan was going to be mandatory starting in 2025. Anyone else hearing this or have an official source?

When in doubt, assume it's just made up nonsense by an agent absent an official announcement. A quick online search yields no news about a change in policy in 2025. Given we've had reports of United agents insisting it's mandatory right now, it's not surprising that an agent would make another false claim.

Boarding international flight at IAD - face recognition issue

Hello

When boarding an International flight home from Dulles (IAD)back to Ireland with United everyone had to step in front of a camera to board. I would say around a 100 people before me went ahead without any issues but when it came to my turn, the camera rejected the photo three times. I can’t remember what it said on the screen but the gate agents proceeded to manually verify my passport / boarding pass and nothing else was said

Ive just been a bit concerned as to why this would happen and wonder if it’s normal for it not to work for some people?

Face recognition, on a large scale, is still new technology, honestly 1 out of 100 with a problem is pretty good. Humans aren't much better.

Reasons -- many, such as the quality of the photo on file, lighting issues, something distinctive about your face, some ethnicity issues (most related to lack of contrast of facial elements, ...). The technology is still not as good as TV shows claim but it will improve with time.

Bottom line, I would not worry. Hopefully, the failure cases are being used to improve the system. As you note, they have a backup approach. It will not prevent boarding.

Could be my inner luddite, but personally I'd be a little satisfied if the camera couldn't figure me out. In any case, as noted just above, there are no consequences to you if it doesn't work on you.

It had never worked for me at SFO and IAD.

This biometric face recognition process was also used last week for GUM-ROR (Guam, USA to Koror, Palau) in lieu of boarding pass scanning. It went very smoothly and efficiently. :tu: 🇬🇺 🇵🇼

It was still working as well as ever GUM-ROR-MNL on New Year's Eve 2024. :tu: 🇬🇺 🇵🇼 🇵🇭

And GUM-MNL on April Fools' Day 2025.
