I have this happening numerous times, all at the gate or on the same day of departure.
My own upgrades cleared to PZ instead of PN. Same thing when I sponsored upgrades for others. I think when PZ=PN=0, the agent or the system just didn't distinguish between PZ and PN on the day of departure. |

I recently asked a friend with GS to apply PP on my upcoming flight.
Surprisingly when checking the upgrade list (72+ hours prior) I see my self in PZ instead of PN. From what I remember it used to be that if GS apply PP to anyone they will be in PN instead of PZ, am i correct? Did something change?

I called and asked the agent
At a minimum may be worth a second call or better a call by the sponsor. |

Any GS member here can call their United support line and verify?

He did, but I believe sometimes those agents get things wrong.

No, the agent said I will only get PZ and not PN

Why does this matter?
Often my own upgrades clear into PZ and not PN. Same with people whom I sponsor. As long as it is upgraded, who cares? It's not like we get anything extra for PN than PZ. |

But if inventory goes to PN1PZ0, then don't you not get upgraded with this situation?

+1 -- inside of 24 hours I have often cleared into PZ -- in fact it could be all the time but I've never cared enough to monitor it. I just assumed it was a GA thing...
At the gate it's usually PZ. |

Depends upon the seat inventory and whether you are using an instrument. I don't sweat it - I get upgraded.

Sure — after clearing, doesn't matter — but I think the point in OP was GS instrument was waitlisting to PZ rather than PN, which theoretically at least reduces chance of upgrade clearing.
I mean If there are lets say 2 seats left and I'm in PZ instead of PN, I might want to move my flight +- 1 day to find one with better availability. |
