Did UA just turn off their CPU system? During the last two weeks I have received CPU right after ticketing when booked within the 4 day window. In fact, I used the fee-free change waiver to change a ticket for this week and the ticket refused to reissue because one leg already CPU'd before the ticket was re-issued. Manual intervention required.

Anyway, booked a new ticket with a connection already within the 4 day 1K window. First flight is booked 0/10 and second is booked 1/12. I'm #1 on both lists. Zero CPU, even today during the normal CPU window for each flight.

I'm wondering if the CPU was turned off because it's causing so many issues with new tickets. Or, it's turned off because UA is expecting to cut so much capacity that they have no clue what flights will actually operate and doesn't want to deal with downgrade comp, etc. Both make sense to me.

Looks like we're going to gate upgrades only?

There's no downgrade comp from losing a CPU on a re-route.

This might be something that's COVID-19 related -- or it could just be that they decided not to run the CPU process for your flights. There are multiple reports dating back at least a year about nearly full flights, with obvious CPUs, not being processed until the gate.

Might be due to this:

I fly about once or twice a week for work and now have more work than I can possibly get to so am booking a lot of travel for the next couple of months. I'm being upgraded on every flight and often the only one in business. I know it won't last but it's nice for a change.

Are those RJ flights? 0/10 sounds like CR5. They have been holding RJ flights to either T-24 or gate, often but not always, for a while now.

They are still pushing CPUs on mainline as of yesterday.

My flights are empty. And I disagree on your first point having just received an ETC two weeks ago for a flight that had first class and was subbed to equipment without it. I was CPU'd and offered any flight out of any nearby city with FC *and* an ETC. I took the ETC and kept my original flight in coach. Certainly an ETC wasn't expected and a nice gesture but I think the common thinking on this board is that if you're in first (regardless of how you got there), GG OVS DOWNGRADE applies? I could be wrong.

Thanks. I hadn't seen that. Certainly could be part of the reason but holding back *all* seats? I don't think so.

Yes, first flight is a CR5. And my connection is mainline (booked 1/12). In my original post when I mentioned about getting a ticket re-issue stuck because CPU processed before the ticket ever re-issued, it was on a CR5. So I don't think it's mainline vs regional.

Just observations at the end of the day.

GG OVS DOWNGRADE applies to oversale situations, where you end up traveling in Y on the same flight where you had a confirmed F ticket, no matter how you got to F. It does not apply to any situation where you are moved to a different flight. I'm glad you got an ETC, but I don't think it was part of any particular policy. :)

Bump.
Since the previous post my CPU rate has been excellent. (11 out of 13) One flight on a single cabin and one purchased F because it was less expensive than a flexible seat. 6 RJs of various flavors, 5 single isle mainline, 1 777er, and 1 787-8.

Both goalie-dad and goalie-mom cleared today (May, 13) PBI-IAD
  • Originally booked together on the outbound portion of this trip and split the reservation at check-in
  • goalie-dad is gold and my Million Miler Companion and goalie-mom is a plebe
  • E175
  • goalie-dad was number 4 on the upgrade list
  • goalie-mom was number 5 on the upgrade list and she got the last upgrade

Curious when you're saying she got the last upgrade, did they keep the cabin at 1/2 full and not clear any others further down the list?

Not sure but I'll ask when I pick them up at SFO tonight in about 5 hours

Looks like that flight flew 9/12 up front (E175), with row 1 empty and rows 2-4 full. Someone also got "upgraded" into 8A, for whatever that means, but it looks like there's one passenger on the upgrade list who didn't clear. (Didn't those lists used to disappear after the flight?)

In Y, the C seats were mostly blocked. 7A and 7B were empty, as were several of the D seats in E+, along with 17D. Rows 17-23 had pairs in the A and B seats; no idea if they were traveling together or not.

UA is NOT keeping the cabin 1/2 full. UA routinely fills more than half the F cabin.

First flight since the new CPU rules went into effect. I'm honestly surprised I'm #3 of 4 for my flight as a 1K on a W fare. So this means one of two things:

1. The CPU system is no longer sorting correctly (doubt it).
2. Only those who were already flying a lot (e.g. have high status) continue to fly.

The front cabin has six seats open and there are six on the list (two are non-rev). (I'm not including the blocked first row). Seat map shows only 4 seats open so I wonder if just the four revenue pax will get upgraded or if all six will. Since I'm #3 I won't get a seat on the single aisle side which means I'll be sitting next to someone. Doesn't really bother me - I just hope they decide to wear a mask.
