Change term "1K" to something else?
 

I know this might be sacrilege to some former suUA members, but "1K" is uniquely goofy among airline tier terminology. Not only that, "1K" announced at boarding gates is often taken as the signal for BG1 to surge forward. I'm vaguely aware of its origin as something that would fit in a two-character data field - I think UA could move on from that.

I originally thought "Titanium" might be an idea. I dwelled on it further and decided it wouldn't be a good idea. If "Platinum" gets shortened to "Plat", one can imagine how "Titanium" would be shortened.

I looked up precious metals. Platinum and Rhodium seem to battle for most valuable metal, but "Rhodium" I wouldn't think evokes a sense of value to the average ear.

That leaves Diamond.

I know nothing will change (Kirby would look at cost of changing signs/literature/web/app), but just thinking random thoughts this morning w/ first cuppa...

Not only is 1k uniquely goofy, it’s also now redundant. Perhaps it should 24k? That would then discourage them from increasing the spend further as they would need to redo the signs yet again.

I think it's a nice nod to the past (if that's what we can call legacy technological limitations). I do agree, though, that it's a meaningless designation given MP is fully based on spending and not mileage flown.

Marriott Bonvoy has TITANIUM as it's upper tier. Indeed, I'm a Lifetime TIT.

United seems to like the "Plus" moniker. How about "UniPlus"?

After the merge my first question upon entering UA’s system was WHY is it called 1K? Doesn’t that mean one thousand?
8 years later and I still don’t know the answer. It’s always been stupid.

Each status had a 2 digit internal code
2P - Premier
1P - Premier Exec
1K - 100K Flyer

I think they should just replace the signs with boarding songs.

And they're 2 digit codes due to a limit of the old computer system used. Obviously no longer an issue but agree it's kind of quirky and everybody understands.

Certainly better than the naming convention Hyatt switched to a few years back (even though I still love them!).

UniPlus sounds like a Japanese clothing brand. Perhaps "Greater Fool", abbreviated to GF.
