LGA - IAH UA 657 Breakfast: spinach quiche. Other option was the "protein plate" Overall, it wasn't bad. I'd have it again. It was more substantial than I expected and the biscuit was served warm and was tasty. Great service this morning from a younger FA who was on the ball and very proactive with drink refills. https://cimg1.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...e884e555d4.png |
IAH-EWR 6 Jan 2020 1020 am departure 763 (Polarisized) seat 5L
2020 looking a lot like 2019 (and 2018, 2017, etc.). No PDB offered. Choice of cold soba noodle salad with chicken or the hot tandoori chicken. Tandoori chicken portion looked smaller but maybe I’m just cynical. Interesting placement of pretzel roll but it was hot and tasty. I took a close-up of the salad to try to show the chintziness of the portion size but the pic probably makes it look better than it was. Despite the small size, it tasted very fresh and crispy. No Prosecco loaded so got what I believe was a (buttery) Chardonnay.

This is a Kale and Egg White Quiche and yes, it is one of the better offerings on the UA domestic rota. |

DEN-SFO 757-300 Snack An old standby, soba noodles with sliced beef. The other choice was a cheese plate, which seemed to be the more popular of the two. I enjoyed my noodles with an old fashioned and some episodes of "Mom." The fresh ginger is a nice addition. The Ghirardelli caramel square is a poor dessert but in and of itself is fine. Good service and not skimpy with the drink refills. https://cimg9.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...2b869bd0e8.jpg |

UA 2278 IAD-LAX, 1/5/2020
777-200 My PlusPoints upgrade--applied less than 24 hours before over the phone as part of an SDC from a different routing--cleared after they'd finished boarding this 8:40 a.m. departure. Happily, somebody no-showed and I got to spend the next five hours in a lie-flat Polaris seat instead of the premium-economy seat that by itself would have represented an upgrade over the usual transcon experience. Breakfast choices were the kale-and-egg pastry or a baked blueberry brioche, so I had to go with the latter, new-to-me item. It make me think more of a baked pancake, with the topping a vanilla cream sauce instead of syrup. The sausage on the side and the biscuit balanced out the sweetness. I'd order it again... but not over the French toast soufflé. https://cimg2.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...fb4ae1b91f.jpg The service was great and a little more precise than usual, in that I noticed the FA turning my glass just after placing it to ensure the United logo faced me. https://cimg1.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...d21938690e.jpg They brought out chocolate-chip cookies, served on napkins instead of plates, maybe 45 minutes before landing. And then I had a good two hours to relax at the Star Alliance lounge and then the United Club before my next flight. I would like to have more work trips start like this! |
LGA-IAH 11 Jan 210 pm departure A319 (12F) seat 2E
Really digging the LGA lounge experience between UC and MLL, both of which are excellent for domestic lounges.
On the flight, choice of Cobb salad or the Thai noodle. Both have been around since forever. PDB was offered. Cobb salad is basic but the chicken portion was healthy and this time I got half a hard boiled egg (sliced into quarters) instead of last month’s 1/4 of an egg sliced into eighths. (New Year, new egg budget?) https://cimg6.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...4dda6e31c.jpeg https://cimg3.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...004d84988.jpeg https://cimg3.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...39beb5bc4.jpeg |
MCO-LAX Morning Flight
Choice of Fruit Plate with Oatmeal OR Ham and Cheese Sandwich with Yogurt took the ham and cheese sandwich with yogurt, came with a small fruit cup and a cinnamon roll. great breakfast |

IAH-DCA 16 Jan 715 am departure E175 seat 1A
No PDB. FA showed iPad photos of the two choices. Never seen that before but it was effective. Cold oatmeal with mango or protein plate. Went with the latter. No UC access at Term A since flight departed at 715 am and club doesn’t open till 730 am. 🤷.

UA717 BOS-LAX 6hr, 38min Broken, cold nuts to start. Dinner after takeoff - choice of chicken breast with grits or cheese paneer. Very "banquet" style chicken, but I needed the protein. Ice cream (whip cream or hot chocolate only) for dessert then cookie halfway through flight. Pretty skimpy for such a long flight. https://cimg8.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...5cb30acda.jpeg https://cimg9.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...baa41d8d5.jpeg https://cimg0.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...48231843d.jpeg https://cimg1.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...c08b0fc79.jpeg |

UA1814 TPA-ORD Hot option was buffalo mac and cheese. Cold option was arugula salad with chicken. I (foolishly) hadn't eaten much all day and was famished so I got the buffalo mac and cheese. As you can see below catering decide to put about 5lbs of breadcrumbs on it, making it almost inedible. After scooping many of them off I did eat it, but mainly because I was so hungry. I would have gotten a snack box to hold me over to the polaris lounge but the boxes are basically just straight junk food. https://cimg2.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...d334a3e79c.jpg |

Any idea why QRO-IAH is listed as refreshments, but BJX-IAH is a meal? The flight times are essentially the same at a little over 2 hours.

UA719 Boeing 777-200 24h of non-stop aircraft musical chairs. The flight was originally scheduled as 787-10 -> 23h before flight, changes to a 787-8 -> 20h before flight, changes to a 787-8 retrofitted (!), plane ended up MX in LAX I think -> 14h before flight, changes to a 3-class sUA 772 ugh. I was in 1L on the 787, but instead of re-assigning me to an old Global First seat, they kick me back to 10K, geez thanks  Meal was similar as above post 16, except I chose the paneer instead of the chicken. https://cimg7.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...978243db20.jpg https://cimg8.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...f0018ead42.jpg |

What is the ice cream flavour? It looks purple, but I wonder if that is from the lighting. I am conditioned to expect vanilla (or lemon sorbet) on UA.

Why did somebody in UA catering decide that the buffalo mac should have bread crumbs on top? Is that a Chicago thing?

Not sure why I bother with the pics. Kale pastry (described as “quiche” on today’s flight by an FA with a distinct and delightful Maine accent) or protein plate (snapped pic from across the aisle). The Maine FA was great — attentive and pleasant. The protein plate looked pretty meh. Biscuit was hot and flakey but I only ate half. Surprised they still have watermelon in January (bulk order?) but it was tasty.

UA474 (afternoon flight) Lunch Entree choices described as “beef with vegetables” and “chicken with rice.” The beef was good although there was only one vegetable: carrots, along with some fingerling type potatoes. The sauce was sort of BBQ style—not bad. I think I’ve seen this dessert described here before as either tiramisu or mocha cake. https://cimg4.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...d5c1ac24b.jpeg |

UA719 IAD-LAX dinner flight. 787-10, first class.
Choice of grilled chicken or paneer. I had the chicken, which came with string beans, grits, sweet potato compote, a pretzel roll, and a cabbage salad. Dessert was a chocolate chip ice cream sundae. Everything was excellent. They also brought the bottles of wine through for passengers to choose from. |
