dang that’s a mess and a half. I was in a completely full flight last week RDU-ORD. I’d been upgraded days prior to 2A in F and listened to some fairly experienced fliers comment that they chose BE and were being seated ONLY IN MIDDLE SEATS in E-

BE passengers get what's left. Often, that's a seat in E and/or a middle seat. Sometimes it's a nice seat in E+. When you book BE you're giving up control. You're not signing up for punishment. The BE passenger's inability to select a seat assignment at booking leaves more open seats from which those who book higher fare classes can choose.
