Really? Had I been forced to check my laptop bag, I would have to either carry my laptop in my hand for the rest of the flight as large electronics are not allowed in the seatback pocket, OR risk the damage/theft of laptop while checked. And you believe I should not be upset over being put in a situation like that? What if it was a less seasoned traveler who was forced to check their bag and lost the bag in transit? .

I respectively disagree with you Kacee. I'm willing to bet this sort of thing hardly ever happens to you (assuming you're a man). It happens to women ALL THE TIME. Some of us are getting really sick of it (and that is putting it mildly!).

See how much the airlines have programmed us into believing something that is absolutely not true. Do you really believe that the Captain would have sided with the FA on this one? But somehow the fear of arrests and jail has been put into us for questioning even the most minor decisions by FAs. I would like to believe that it is not the norm (arrests/jail) as long as I am reasonable in my stance.

It's easy to talk big on line. We get this foolish bravado every time one of these threads crops up. I've never had a problem with TSA or CBP. I did argue with a security guy in BKK though. I did not win and to be honest I'm not even sure if I was right, since the rules differ from country to country. |

Agreed, this idea that these people (TSA, CBP, GA's, FA's) should never be questioned is beyond absurd. It's all too common for them to believe that they are the ultimate arbiters when they are often poorly informed and very very used to never being questioned. |

I refuse to be pummeled into submission by anyone when I know I'm in the right, and I don't care what sort of "authority" they think they have over me. And if I was sitting next to the OP and heard the Clint Eastwood FA threaten her, I would have not stayed quiet either. |

Sadly, I had one experience in first class whereas, the gentleman behind me (happen to be olive tone) had his cellphone grabbed by FA who thought he was filming the cabin after closing the door. He was simply poor vision and watching a video on his mobile device with this business casual attire on. I wrote a letter indicating how awful I thought the treatment and felt bad for the embarrassment of the passenger and FA should get retraining - the reply was safety/operations matters. I didn't bother going back with the number of folks filming aircraft take-off/landing, their first/vacation/honeymoon flight, etc. without a peep. Honestly, that incident irritated me so much I would speak up if I were onboard and challenge the FA on unnecessary tone/confrontation is unnecessary as you haven't done anything. I agree the passengers have the numbers and shouldn't feel we are pupils in N.Vietnam forced to endure disrespect. |

Well then, so be it. If enough folks who have been made a victim do this, maybe there will be a change. If we all keep putting up with this, nothing will change. And that is what is upsetting to me - that I caved in like a coward.
You, and me, and anyone reading this thread will remember this for next time and maybe be ready for it. Keep your chin up girlfriend and don't let the .......s get you down. |

"Don't worry sir, we'll make the lady with ONLY a tiny personal item check her bag to accommodate you." |
Had similar experience on another *A airline in North America (I'll let you figure that one out). They insisted I put my dress suit organizer on the ground in spite of the fact that I checked my carry on bag in and had already put something under the seat in front of me. While it did fit, the fact that my freshly pressed dress clothes were in such close contact to the ground to be disgusting. Granted it was on a Q400 but you would think they would extend a little courtesy for a proud UA Gold traveller who travels regularly on business and makes use of the Zone 1 boarding specifically to ensure these situations never happen!

This topic comes up here on flyertalk from time to time. There is even a contingent here who feel that someone who only has a personal item (no large item) should be obliged to put it under the seat, so as to be courteous to the other passengers... many of whom bring their massively oversized carryons AND oversized "personal items"... both of which they jam in the overhead. For the FA to push this when you clearly could not use the underseat storage is outrageous. The later arriving passenger should definitely be the one to check a bag. Lets keep the topic focused on the on the topic and not deriding others based on your opinion that we all should not do the right thing. :x) |
