Did I dream up these K fares?
Since Monday this week I've been keeping an eye on K fares from CLE to MXP for a wide range of dates between late February into the first week of March which were ~ $600. Today, they are all gone. Cheapest fare I can find for the same dates is north of $4,000. What happened?

"late february" is now inside 2 weeks..... probably was some advance purchase requirements were in place, or the buckets sold out. Either way: you snooze.....

See them on EF. KLX77LGT (basic economy "light" fare) and KLX77NCT. Had a 7-day advance purchase and 7-day min stay requirements. Looks like you missed the boat -- TICKETS MUST BE ISSUED ON/BEFORE 11FEB19. This is published under the "Sales Restrictions" section in the fare rules.
There are K fares out of YYZ that are about $680 in USD after converting from CAD.

Nope. They were gone in a matter of minutes. These fares either get gobbled up very quickly or United's website is messing with me.

Try tracking with Google flights It will send you an email whenever the fare changes, perhaps next time book it as you see it decrease. Remember you can always cancel within 24 hours so the old adage is booked now think later

There are numerous fare alert services and price drops are quickly noticed.

As mentioned buy or farelock and then think about it. I can across a Premium Plus /Premium Economy TATL for the same as regular about a week ago -- farelocked it and then asked the wife. Within hours it was back to the 50+% premium (today as the lower fare class sold out it is 100% premium).

Thanks for the suggestions. I'll take a look at google for fare changes and use farelock next time. I'm just surprised how quickly these fares come and go.

It's probably inventory? What days and seasonality are you looking at? The dirt-cheap K fares are certainly published right now.

I was looking at a very quick (2 to 3 nights) round trip to Milan next week. Depending on the day or time of the day, these k fares become visible at United's reservation search engine. Within the last 2 weeks or so, they appeared and disappeared at least a dozen times.

Huh, you're right. Someone is having too much fun filing and pulling fares. The K fares from above actually expired faster. Take what you can get I guess.

MXP is wacky, I think mainly to Emirates' play on the 2-person flights. I grabbed an ORD-MXP Sunday for $570, connecting in EWR. (would have positioned).

Today, EWR-MXP was only $20 more, so I changed to it. And then the reverse trip is $40 cheaper.
