It's posted now as a 1+.

I am scheduled to fly DCA-ORD-SFO in the midst of this. If ORD is a mess, UA is likely to rebook me IAD-XXX-SFO the next morning. Is there any chance I can get my return changed to IAD as well, since that is where my car will be? What magic words need to be spoken to make this happen?

This is three weeks in a row. So much for a mild winter!

I'm doing a separate ticket connection on UA1769 YYZ-ORD to JL9 ORD-NRT in mid-Feb so I really hope the weather troubles subside. 5.5hr delay on that flight today.

Separate tickets for ORD in Jan/Feb just asking for trouble. Consider SDCing YYZ-ORD to the day / night before.

Yup. Hotel booked. Watching the weather closely. If it's forecasting sun and decent temps a couple days before I'll probably chance it since it is a 3.5hr connection.

Ask politely? I'd say there's a decent chance.

I got notified about this by UA and rebooked my LHR-ORD-STL flight tomorrow as LHR-IAH-STL. The problem is the 3-5 inches of snow which was originally scheduled to hit Chicago around midnight and they think may now be as early as 6 pm.

Yes, decent chance, and the magic words would be "Any chance I can get my return changed to IAD as well, since that is where my car will be?" :-p

Yes, though in this case the snow that is the cause of this waiver is the mild weather, before we plunge down to -17 F on Wednesday.

Hopefully hits as early as possible on 1-27-19. Get it over with so Monday morning outbounds are not affected as much

There's a limit to how many planes you can de-ice in a given period.

And the many miles of taxi ways, runways, tarmac and other road surfaces you have to keep clear in order for not only planes but support vehicles to traverse in and around ORD for airport operations to continue.

I often ask this question. In the past we’d land in horrible blizzards, etc. Now, 2 flakes and game over.
