I have transported ammo in the firearm case, albeit not recently. From United's own website (https://www.united.com/ual/en/us/fly...equipment.html), my emphasis added:
To correct myself, while I was advised by the TSA agent to NOT use TSA-accessible locks, TSA's website says you can use any brand or type including TSA-recognized locks (https://www.tsa.gov/travel/transport...and-ammunition). Thanks - can anyone recommend a lock that has passed scrutiny? I'm flying ORD-RSW and back if that matters, as YMMV. thank you |

Checking firearms, SJU-ORD
Hello, I'm looking for info from flyers that have checked firearms in domestic flight, in particular with AA or UA. I'm planning on bringing my dad's firearms from Puerto Rico to ORD. From what I've read in TSA, they must be checked in a TSA approved case, I've read up the checking in firearms section from AA/UA and I can check up to 5 guns per case, and I can have multiple cases. They don't require registration info. From my part I have my valid IL FOID card.
Am I missing something, any other additional suggestions, recommendations on travel gun case (there are 6 guns in total) should I insure the case, thoughts? |

Flying non-stop? I check firearms somewhat frequently but 'it depends' is a common refrain as youvhave to look at legalities at the destination, transfer hub if any, and be ready for diversions. The actual check-in with the firearm is normally fairly smooth though I have never tried in San Juan. PM me if you prefer. |
Pretty sure the cases need to be hard sided and for sure they must be lockable.
As for insuring, yes definitely. |
