If the latter it might be a cobbled together fare and you are up for baggage charges.
I know within Australia where there is no Star Alliance airlines UA sometimes uses QANTAS as a feeder and there are no baggage charges when making connections. Being a QANTAS subsidiary this sometimes can mean a Jetstar flight but have never heard baggage charge complaints in that case (apart from the one above).

Unfortunately this happens more often than you think. UA does this all the time in Asia. If you're trying to get to Southeast Asia for example, UA will often route you through Hong Kong connecting to Cathay or Hong Kong Airlines, instead of its own *A partners Thai/Air China/ANA. I got a great deal on a ticket just like that to Bangkok last year, and it was hundreds less than if the connecting segments were operated by a *A carrier.

Because you bought the ticket on United, the bags should interline. However, the baggage policy will be different than UA (ex. no premier baggage benefits). But, when UA sells a ticket this way, usually at least 1 bag is included.

Flying SFO-SIN-REP with first leg on UA, second on Jetstar. Single ticket booked on United stock. Do I trust this with checked baggage, or better to do carry-on only? If carry-on, I'm a bit concerned about the Jetstar segment, since their carry-on restrictions are rather draconian (7kg???!!!). Don't know if coming from the United flight makes a difference. Oddly, the ticket claims to book into Jetstar First, and far as I know, there's no such thing as Jetstar First. Could be that's their least-restrictive booking class, allowing for additional carry-on maybe?

Thanks-

My experience with Australian airlines is that the carry-on problem is generally restricted to within Australia. Enforcement of that 7kg can be pretty insane. I have countless stories of waiting until the bag-weigher is busy before racing past with my 9kg roll-aboard, or having to pull stuff out and carry it in my hands to get past the weigh-in. It's become worse in recent years too - I was forced to check a bag on a QF business flight SYD-MEL-PER in December. It weighed a touch under 10kg.

I doubt anyone in SIN is going to weigh your carry-on, but I also haven't flown Jetstar out of SIN.

It looks like the bags will interline. Per the Jetstar Asia website they list UA as one of their partner airlines they interline with as long as the entire flight is on one booking. On the other hand I have no idea what is Jetstar First, but maybe it maps to the Jetstar Starter Max bundle which offers some perks above and over the base fare. Best to ask at check in. The 7kg hand carry limit is something that they are off and on checking. I never got checked but bearing in mind Jetstar is a low cost carrier and some of the competitors have been known to weigh at the gate, never say never. Overall Jetstar is a comfortable and reliable airline. For a regional flight of a couple of hours, it's perfectly fine.

So the question becomes, should I check bags? My preference would be carry-on only, but it's a bit of a hassle compared to just checking it through.

Thanks!

I had a UA ticket with segments on Jetstar and wondered the same thing. I usually do carry-on only and was mainly worried about the 7kg limit. I found no problems whatsoever on Jetstar both ways and almost empty overhead bins. I believe I flew UA to SIN and then connected via Jetstar to DPS. :obviously, your experience might vary.

I don't see why you wouldn't check in your luggage. In fact if the interlining happens as per what the Jetstar website says, you shouldn't see your bags until arriving at REP unless there too many hours between your UA and 3K (Jetstar Asia) flights.

I've paid Jetstar the extra to check in luggage, and the bags have always arrived just fine. On the other hand, you have 7 kg carry on allowance, which is 15.4 pounds. Between you and your daughter you have nearly 31 pounds. Do you think you can pack within that weight?

I just got off a few jetstar flights. I would check the bags if they are rollers, they weigh all of those. If it is a backpack and slightly overweight, then just board the plane toward the end and they likely won't even check/weigh as they are more likely to scoot you on for on time departure than try to get you on an extra kilo or 2.

Sounds like we'll be checking bags then!!! It's possible that the booking class UA puts us into includes the heftier overhead allowance for JetStar, but looks like we just can't know for sure. While I'd rather travel "self contained" if possible, it doesn't sound like a good idea here, especially if UA has full interlining with JetStar so the bags can be checked all the way through.

I was looking at an Ewr-Hkg-Sin booking earlier in the month. Hkg-Sin was on Jetstar. Thought it was odd how UA was shunning the other star carriers in Asia. Return Sin-Tyo-Ewr, UA only showed ANA their JV partner as connections. SQ was available at 3 times the price..
Because EWR-HKG is a late aft flight it was my preferred routing. Used to connect to an ORD-HKG-Sin flight. But UA only has west coast flights out of Sin, and now offers Jetstar and ANA as the only choices. In the end my plans changed and I went though LAX on the non-stop to SIN.

In December I traveled on Jetstar as part of a trip that I booked through United. My carry-on was just over 7 Kg. I was admonished, and then the agent let it go. I checked a bag, and that worked OK. In Cairns, I checked the bag but they would only check it through to Melbourne. But on the return, United checked the bag all the way through to Cairns.

United loves offering cheap connections in Asia (esp. Southeast Asia) to random non *A carriers, whether it be Jetstar, Cathay Pacific, or Hong Kong Airlines. And for example in the case of connecting to Bangkok, you'll only find full fare Y connections to Thai Airways. At least baggage interlining seems to be included with all these "partners".
