Fascinating that they are choosing to fly it out of IAH, since I'm not sure they plan to permanently place it on IAH routes.

I suspect it's because they're down an sCO 772, so only options are IAH or EWR. And from a utilization perspective IAH-LHR makes sense; not so sure about IAH-EZE though.

880/04Jun and 879/05Jun are swapped into a 77W as well due to a 77Y OS.

I too have a flight coming up on UA880, currently showing 777-200 and was curious what United does with the seating chart? Currently I'm in 2D, but want to know if I would be better off picking another seat with the idea United will swap with the 777-300.

The odds of you having a 777-300 out of IAH are slim to none. All frames are essentially flying out of SFO, with the exception of the two flights out of EWR (TLV and NRT). An equipment sub here and there is so random (especially out of base), that you'd have better odds just going out and playing MegaMillions this week.

I was on UA 880 that got switched from 772 to 77W on Sunday Jan 14.
The seatmap changed about 48 hours before the flight.
The 77W was flown in from ORD earlier in the day as a non-scheduled flight (empty flight).
We were in 11AB on the 772 and got moved to 11DG on the 77W.
