United Maintenance Forgets to Update Map Navigation Database - So We're Sitting at Ga

On UA 930 SFO-LHR. However, we are sitting at gate because they forgot to update the map navigation database that apparently expired 10 hours ago.

I've had mechanical delays before - but this is the first I've ever had that seems to be clear negligence on the carrier's part. What a pain. They said they hope the delay will be limited to 45 minutes.

Aren't new AIRAC cycles available well ahead of their effective date? Odd that they would wait so long to update.

On that note, does anyone know how the update actually occurs? Do they have to plug in something, or is there an OTA update mechanism?

Sitting on the ground in IAH. Apparently all flights are in the same boat. Anyone have any news on how long this takes to update.

Also just heard that the network is down supporting the baggage system UA wide? Is there a full blown outage?

Apparently there is a maintenance guy with a laptop doing a 40 minute download.

Yes, the cycles are on a predictable schedule years in advance. And the operators are supposed to have the updates 28 days before they become effective.

OTA update mechanism would be a huge security / safety risk in the eyes of the airline and OEM, I think.

Still held at gate in IAH. According to captain 13 other flights at IAH affected by baggage / nav system issues.

While it's not implemented yet, it's definitely coming in the next 5-10 years. Mix of wifi and LTE networks to serve the gates.

Appears to be system wide unimatic outage. Anyone get off the ground after 9:00PM CST?

Sitting at EWR with (we're told) 45 more mins in front of us. Captains terminology is "performance data".

Someone needs to implement a better to-do list with reminders :)

From what United twitter team posted:
"We're experiencing issues with our weight reporting system & are working to resolve this as quickly as we can."

Wonder if it's affecting Intl flights too:

Relative's UA983 HGH-SFO delayed 1+ and counting hour for maintenance, yet showing on schedule on .bomb...

Edit: Just posted an "operational difficulties" delay, so I'm guessing it's affecting inbound Int'l too

I'm on my way to DUB, so yes.

Edit: you meant inbound. My bad.
