Well what do you expect? It seems like there's only 8 elites on this flight, so good chance that no one is silver.

My son (silver) recently cleared HNL-SFO and the flight left with everyone on the list cleared and 2 empty seats in F. Rare, but happens. 2 nights later, I failed to clear (same flight) as 1K.

Someone kindly correct me if I am wrong. I believe the reason people choose to not split is that in the case of IRROPS, things can get messed up if the reservations had been split into two reservations. Thus, if a Silver chooses to not split, their name will not appear on the visible upgrade standby list. That could be an explanation to the OP's question. However, is it also true that a Silver with a companion can be manually added to the Upgrade standby list after 24 hours.? I know it gets confusing. I am curious about whether the OP got upgraded and if people appeared on the Upgrade Confirmed list before the OP did or did not get upgraded. |
Sorry for the slow response. Apparently that subscription email went into a hole.
I got upgraded. For a PDB and a post red eye nap. Not quite at the very end, but at the gate. Perhaps the 30 minute window? No one was on the list after me. I think there was a seat in F empty in the end. I doubt unsplit PNRs and groups were an issue - it didn't look like a group heavy flight. F purchases have got to be close to 0 on this flight (I got a total of $9 PQD for this leg of my flight.) Didn't seem like shenanigans, but I'm still surprised at 0 silvers on board.

Quick math - if draws are independents and silvers are 10% of flight seat segments flown, then about 1 in 1600 70 flyer flights have 0 silvers. If silvers are 5% of flight segments then about 1 in 36. If the plane has a 165 flyers then the odds are about 1 in 35 million and 1 in 4700 respectively. I don't know what share of segments are silvers (which obviously varies a ton by lots of stuff) but perhaps this isn't uncommon on a 70 seat flight, but pretty darn rare on a similar route a larger plane. |
My wife flew about 20 segments last year and was twice upgraded on an award ticket when using the UA credit card, indicating any/all silvers were already upgraded.
|
I should note this wasn't a flight where silvers got upgraded, or all silvers got upgraded. It was a flight without any silvers to upgrade. More over, it was a basically full flight without silvers to upgrade.
