737-900 (was N75436, now N75435) Plane with Retro Continental Livery
Flew through LAX last night, and while taxiing to our gate we passed a plane parked on the ramp in what looked like VERY old CO livery.
It looked like either a 737 or A319 or A320 (couldn't get that great a view from my aisle seat) but the livery had a block stripe with "CONTINENTAL" on the tail and CONTINENTAL AIRLINES along the sides of the plane originating from an eagle under the cockpit on both sides. Anyone seen this before or have any idea what it is? It looked pretty cool, like a throwback sort of one or few-off livery? |
Was it this?
|
You probably saw the retro livery 737-900 (N75436)
|
Yeah, that was it. Awesome, never seen that before. Looked cool in person!
|
|
yeah seeing both retrojets is kind of cool.
although on another note though, in my travels i still run across (as recent as saturday) the occasional UAex plane still in its old battleship grey colors... |
Yesterday afternoon (Sunday), I flew on a 737-900. EWR-CLE. After arrival, looked out an adjoining window, and saw "Continental airlines" printed on its side. Too dark to notice any eagles.
How many of those things are there? |

I'd sure love to see a CO retro jet in the Saul Bass meatball scheme. I know for some ex-COns it evokes the "bad old days" of double-bankruptcies, but I think it's one of the classiest liveries of all time.

Catch it while you can, because I believe this bird is scheduled for a repaint soon...

I could have sworn that UA Insider or someone from the company said that even after the merger all the retro liveries would remain. I would be sad to see them re-paint this bird.
|
That's cool, I also like the old United liveries and the one they introduced right before the merger. Let's have some variety.

Saw both land within 10 minutes of each other at SAN last Wednesday...that was surreal.

Time to shine PJV33!
Look at this beautiful bird I found at IAH on 5/4 while on my way to SJU. http://imgur.com/bJGstmT original picture is apparently massive and completely distorted the board viewing for me. now just a link. |

I flew it EWR-SFO on Dec 13...my first time on a UA/CO retro jet. I saw it taxiing towards our gate, and got a little excited when I saw it turning :) I would have preferred the UA retro jet, but it'll do.
|
Retro CO jet?
Saw this in SFO last week. What the heck is this?

It's the retro livery plane... |
Just saw it in BOS this morning. Gate B26.
|
I got to fly in the retro CO in March from CZM to IAH. The best part was listening to the clueless people speculate on the plane's age and airworthiness.
|
Retro CO jet?
Just flew in it EWR to CLE on Friday. (At least I think that was the route....might've been EWR to BOS on Wed.)

I wish the airlines would sometime manage to get a bunch of retro planes together...US has the America West, Piedmont, PSA, and Allegheny ones and current UA has the retro UA and CO ones. Parker has said that the new AA will keep the retro US ones and have a TWA and throwback AA (and AA has had a retrojet before, as has DL before and another has appeared this spring--maybe they can do a NW bowling shoe livery sometime too). I would love to see all of them together at the same airport sometime....maybe the airlines would fret though. Might make people remember the good old days! |

Wish they'd get rid of it. They get the entire fleet in CO colors and one that still says "Continental" all over it, while painting over every Tulip. And this "United Airlines"???? All Jeff'd Up.

New 'Continental' Metal on 739 ??
This past Wed, I flew UA 1049 from CUN to EWR- upgraded to F. Flight was ok, DTV on board with working WiFi. Nothing really unusual, except for the fact that the signage on the plane showed Continental, but not the recent 'blue world globe on white' CO, but a thin striped red and blue with a very different logo. I was going to take a picture, but unfortunately going through to customs, photos are not allowed. The inside of the plane didn't seem very different (a bit old, but then again I assumed it was legacy UA metal). Any ideas??

This is the retro liveried Continental jet.
|
There's 2 retro liveries. A CO 739ER tail #436 and a UA A320 tail #4275. The CO 737 is painted in the Continental blue skyways livery, while the UA A320 is painted in the stars & bars livery. There's a thread somewhere on them.
|
This one?
http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_kC5MT2r5U8...ro+737-900.jpg Just a special retro paint job. Same plane as any other 737. And it is sCO, as UA got rid of all it's 737s before the merger. There is an Airbus painted in similar retro United paint. |

The 739s are all pretty young. They started entering the fleet in 2008 but if yours had DirecTV then it should be younger than that. The TV system wasn't FAA certified yet when the initial 739s were delivered and I'm not sure if those early ones have ever been retrofitted.
