There is another thread for interlining bags when on separate PNR / tickets, see Bag Interlining Changes If Separate Tix with *A & Non *A Partners after 1 March 2015

Bag interlining (also known as “interline luggage”) is a voluntary commercial agreement between individual airlines to handle passengers bags traveling on itineraries that require multiple airlines, even if not the same alliance (if on a single PNR).

UA's interlining agreement list (May 2022)

Bagagge - Connecting flights

For a trip that includes one or more connections, United will check bags to the final destination stated on the ticket. Your connecting flight must depart within 12 hours of your arrival at the airport in order for your bags to transfer automatically. United will generally transport checked baggage on the same flight as the traveler. If this is not practical, United will arrange to transport the baggage on the next flight with available space.
You'll need to claim and re-check baggage if you are:
  • Making a voluntary stopover
  • Making a connection that involves an overnight stay
  • Connecting to an itinerary booked on a separate ticket that doesn't include a Star Alliance partner airline
  • Traveling internationally and connecting to a domestic flight within your destination country

Please check the history. I was responding to a comment that interlining was always discretionary which was in response to my comment that it was discretionary when on separate tickets. So I was responding to that when I said it was not discretionary in the case of a single ticket.

You may repeat the same thing over and over but it won't change the way things work. I am happy that it has always worked for you that UA interlined your bags to CX but the fact is the airline's policy regarding checking bags on separate tickets supersedes any interline agreements it may have with another airline. If the airline's policy prohibits checking bags on separate tickets (and I am not talking only UA here) then no interline agreement nor an agent's discretion will help you. UA seems to have a very lax policy with regard to checking bags through to other airlines on separate tickets but it does not mean that other airlines operate that way, and with AA coming out with the new policy of not checking bags through on separate tickets (unless partner/OW airline) I believe UA and other U.S.-based airlines will follow suit.

ok, I will just throw one out for opinions - if you think there will be an issue...

Flying VVO-ICN-NRT-IAD - 2 separate tickets (

1. VVO-ICN - booked as SU (who does interline with UA) but operated by HZ (who doesn't?)

2. ICN-NRT-IAD on UA

So if they Interline great - if they don't gonna be really tight to get out & re-check (1:50 connect time)...

It's amazing, no matter how obsure an itinerary can usually find FT'ers who have done or tried it...help me out if any insights!

I would not expect interline with this on bags. NO WAY. Don't risk it.

(This from someone that has never done this route. My two cents).

It is not an actual Codeshare flight, so SU can interline the baggage to UA:

I want to ask if I have a trip: PIT-SFO(UA)-HKG(CX),two flights are booked on separate tickets and if I ask for baggage through at PIT, which carrier's baggage rule would apply?

UA's policy. If they even agree to check through to a non-UA carrier. (See above discussions regarding UA and CX).

No. UA's policy between PIT-SFO. That is the whole reason why airlines will no longer continue interlining separate tickets - due to confusion/arguments by passengers over the DOT regulations re: baggage.

This is the critical issue. The DOT rule uses the word "itinerary" when it should use the word "ticket". There is no such thing as an itinerary or it is something which anybody can make up.

While the DOT is simple to understand, it has led to carriers refusing to check across tickets and agents not understanding the problems they create.

In this case, if PIT-SFO-HKG were on one ticket, the policy of the marketing carrier for PIT-SFO, likely UA, would apply to the entire ticket through to HKG. And if there were a return on the same ticket, to that return too.

*A Partners Checking Baggage to Final Destination

I will be flying LIS to LHR on TAP. I have a 3 hour layover in LHR and then connect to IAH on UA. All is booked on a single itinerary through UA. Will TAP check my bags all the way through to IAH? Other *A airlines (LH) have done so for me, but I read that TAP will not do the same. Any experiences here?

I flew that route in the opposite direction and my bags were checked through and arrived with no problem. The TAP flight was very nice.

I have also flown IAH-FRA-LIS with the FRA-LIS on TAP with bags checked through.
