I heard that if you reach 3 million miles you get 1k for life and you can give one to your friends or family. Is that true?

You get the upgrade instruments for flying, but you DON'T get them with MM gifted status.

So toi answer your question precisely, OP would get the SWU for passing 100K miles (but not for the gifted status).

So were you saying that the OP would get the upgrade instruments even if he/she did not satisfy the minimum spending requirement ($10K) because he/she was gifted the 1K status?

I don't think that is what TimInSF is saying. He is saying you only get the GPUs and RPUs if you fly 100k (and spend 10k), but when gifted 1K from a MM you get just that 1K status. No GPUs or RPUs but you get everything else that comes with being a 1K (baggage allowance, 100% mileage bonus, premier access, Star Gold, CPU priority, etc).
