The Altoona - Johnstown route receives significant subsidies via Essential Air Services. Looks like they are renegotiating these contracts:

As of 2010, the subsidy for this flight was apparently $922 per flight

15 minutes air time is impossible on that route without violating the <10,000 feet speed limit of 250 knots.

JST-AOO does indeed show bookable--$194 roundtrip or $97 one way!

Not sure it really counts, but when US Helicopter was around, the trip from TSS-EWR was 10.8 miles and was bookable on Continental.com as a code share. It was about an 8 minute ride in a Sikorsky S-76.

I really miss that service...

I used to fly into ORD and then drive to MKE. Until I realized I was missing out on 1000 rountrip pqms and 2000 rdms.....all for a 14-17 minute flight. ^

Den to Cos is like 70 miles still longer but that is one of colorado springs' most popular destinations.

Well, it wasn't a commercial flight, so it definately does not count but ... I took a jet once from HWD to OAK which is about 7 or 8 miles.

A private Cessna Citation was gassing up at Hayward, for about $1 less than Oakland charges, they did this often to save about $700-1000 a pop.

I was at the pump fueling my lowly Cardinal 177, and after a few minutes of chatting with the pilot, he offered a ride, and there's very little in the world that could make me turn that down...

Took off on runway 28L, did a wide left 360 an came out of it on the approach for OAK 27.

The whole thing took maybe 10 minutes from engines on to off. A very cool 10 minutes.

If US were still in *A you could probably bank miles to UA and fly anywhere, since a significant number of US planes divert, turn around, or bust a tire before even taking off. In the last two cases - $xxx/0 miles.

That's a fun ride.

n.b. The link above is to my blog or to one which I am a regular contributor. FT rules require that I disclose that in the post.

I love the CLD-LAX flight. If I ever need to fly out of either LAX, SNA, or SAN, I always try to book CLD-LAX-XXX.

18 minute flight over Catalina Island and there's nothing like flying on an EMB-120 Jungle Jet @ 8,000 feet during severe turbulence...LOL. The flight attendants are awesome on this flight.

Shortest flights in UA's system

Just discovered this thread in the pre-merged UA forum: http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/unite...hreads-10.html

Seems like a lot of these flights do not exist anymore (e.g. checked SNA-LAX, LAX-OXR, ORD-MKE, etc.). I'd be curious to hear what the shortest flights are in UA's current routes, and perhaps make a wiki with a list.

I'll start:

- LAX-SAN, 109mi
- SFO-SMF, 129mi

Practical usefulness: collecting 500 PQM, getting small accelerator offers. Plus, it's fun & interesting.

ORD-MKE most definitely exists. Picked Wed Dec 2 and there are 7 n/S on SkyWest on a CRJ200.

Winner. 67 miles I believe. Wikipedia has a list: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Non-st...ortest_flights, but it appears to be wrong in this case, at least for UX.

Edit: Also interesting on there is the "longest flight by aircraft type" table. Scroll down to the RJ's; I bet you'll never guess who uses them on the longest routes.
Edit2: Missed the fact that UA's shortest flight (GUM-ROP) is actually shorter than UX's shortest flight (ORD-MKE).
