How to Cancel Waitlisted Upgrade?

I paid for a flight and subsequently requested upgrades both ways using miles. The upgrades are waitlisted. How do I cancel this upgrade request before it clears? Based on another thread as long as it is still waitlisted I should not be charged a redeposit fee. Correct?

This can be done by calling reservations.

In my experience, the request to reservations takes not much time at all.

But, your instruments/miles will probably never be credited back, and it's likely to take many hours and many emails/calls to try to get them credited. Good luck with that.

Don't know about fees. As a 1K, I haven't paid any fees.

Getting better w/re-crediting instruments/miles. Doing a couple of these on the phone right now, it's pretty fast (as in ~10 minutes or so, not PMUA fast ;))

I just did one last week, had to go through huge amount of effort to get miles returned to account.

One of the reasons I've given up on 1K is that I can't afford to spend this much time dealing with system and process failures.

Incidentally, recent international journey, out of 9 legs flown, only 2 have been credited, 3-4 weeks out now. Yet another thing I have to spend more time chasing.

I was unlucky when i unlisted an upgrade that a friend sponsored it took about a hour.

Can anyone confirm that as a Gold I will Not have to pay fees to re-deposit the waitlisted upgrade?

I can't make sense of this, probably by design, but the answer should be here, and based on this, I think you're going to pay a fee:

You had the same problem with the chart I had. It doesn't address waitlisted upgrades. However, others have stated no fee on waitlisted upgrades

It took some time on the phone, but I did cancel a waitlisted upgrade and did not pay a fee.

A way to cancel complimentary upgrade online?

I am a Premier Gold, automatically wait-listed for comp. upgrades.

As crazy as that might sound, sometimes I rather keep my nice front row isle E+ seat, with extra leg-room, than get upgraded to crowded window First Class... (yes, I am a little crazy...)

In the past (before the merger website redesign), there was a way on United website to remove one-self from the upgrade wait-list with just a few clicks online. I searched everywhere on the new website, and cannot seem to find it. Is there a way to do this? Thank you

no, you have to call.

I called to cancel my upgrades before they cleared and the phone rep confirmed I would not pay a fee. However, since I still had not received the miles back into my account, I sent Mileage Plus an email. They replied and said I had to pay the $100 fee per person to get back my 80,000 miles. I'm assuming they are just wrong?

You do have to call but don't expect it to be flawless.

I've had interesting situation where I called several times to be voluntarily downgraded after complimentary upgraded but the system kept automatically upgrading me again. After 4 separate attempts I finally just kept my F seat and traded with the guy on the plane.

So I called and while nice, the csr said that I had to pay the $100 redeposit fee. She even went and checked with a supervisor. Because I was trying to get back upgrade awards for both my wife and I, she stated it would be $200. However, when she put it through, it only charged her $100. Small victory.

milemonkey Dec 9, 2012 3:51 pm

Now it is getting ridiculous. UA has now charged me $400 to get back my 80,000 miles back. This is after I was first told that there would be no fee because I requested them back before they cleared. Secondly when they had not been credited back I called and was told I only had to pay $100.

Does anyone at UA know what is going on or can anyone point me to where it says that I have to pay this $400?
