I was just looking at "My Account" at united.com and noticed that the Mileage Expiration had this note:

Thank you for being a Chase MileagePlus cardmember. Your miles will not expire as long as your credit card account is active, your annual membership fee has been paid and the card is not in default. Upon cancellation of your credit card account, your miles will expire in accordance with the MileagePlus program rules.
Does that mean if I cancel this card, my united miles will be deleted?

No you're just subject to the 18-month expiration if there's no other activity on your account.

Thanks for the advice and replies. I think I may cancel.

When will I be able to reapply and receive a bonus?

I am using this mainly for when I travel but the perks are what is nice. I will use the CSP more and the fact that I can take them through the UR mall.

Yup, the CSP + Explorer is a great combo. Make sure to add the Freedom and Ink combo (biz card) to max out. They have no annual fees and the extra points adds up, ALOT.

ETA: Just realized I replied to a one year-old post, my fault.

Just wondering, you don't want to keep it for the 10K bonus after $25K spend?

My total annual credit card spend is about $25k and I put the vast majority of that on my Chase Sapphire Preferred.

Definitely a good reason to cancel then

If I've already received my monthly statement that has my $95 annual fee on it, do you think I can still cancel and not have to pay the annual fee?

Gunner14 Jul 23, 2013 10:05 am

I believe you have sixty (60) days to cancel after the annual fee posts.

iowa guy Jul 23, 2013 10:26 am

How long after cancelling would I have to wait to reapply to get some type of sign-on bonus?

Gunner14 Jul 23, 2013 10:44 am

I think twenty-four (24) months post-cancellation has been thrown around. From what I can tell it's very much a YMMV thing.

Personally, I think primary coverage is overrated. Since your own insurance covers everything but the deductible, that's really your only monetary risk. A common justification is that it protects you from having to file a claim on your insurance at all. But, for your usual driving, would you pay an additional fee over and above your existing insurance premium so you wouldn't have to use the insurance you're already paying for?

Maybe if you rent frequently or you're a poor driver... but I'm not a fan of paying twice for something.

Many auto insurers will only pay out Actual Cash Value in a claim. ACV is often less than the replacement value of the vehicle, which is what the rental car agency will hold you responsible for.

You can get in trouble even if the other driver is at fault.

That's why I purchase the Loss Damage Waiver or Collision Damage Waiver. (Exact terminology varies between rental car agency.) This coverage can run anywhere from $10 to $30 per day, depending on the location and rental car agency.

Using the MP Explorer card on rental car transactions provides this coverage, so I break even on the annual fee after three or four rental car days.

And that's not counting the other benefits - two Club passes, CPU eligibility on award bookings, RDMs, bonus RDMs for $25K annual spend, no foreign transaction fees, and now the PQD waiver for Premier tiers up to Platinum.

To prevent miles from expiring (not a lot) is it advisable to buy miles directly from united or get this card?

None.

The easiest way is to buy a 99 cent song/app from iTunes from the MP mall: https://www.mileageplusshopping.com/...rch_box&mids=3

or do a free survey for miles: https://www.opinionmilesclub.com/

The CPUs on award tickets for UA Credit Card holders is another reason keeping it and for 1Ks, the $60 credit to partially offset the fee.

That said I may cancel the card mid year assuming no good retention offer after I meet the $25k spend and apply for a Biz Explorer for the new signing bonus and $25k spend bonus. Plus this will start the clock on potentially being eligible for a new personal signing bonus 24 months after the closure.

Thanks. I'll check out the 99 cent song from the MP mall.
