confusing message when selecting seats, could someone clarify?

O.k. I last flew on UA the day of the space shuttle Columbia tragedy, so I'm really not familiar with their website. Tonight I bought tickets on Expedia (for the points, of course) and then tried to change our seat assignments. It looked as if that was successful, but after I hit "continue" the following message showed on the next screen:

! Advance seat assignments are restricted for this flight. Please select a seat during check-in.
Seat Assignments: EWR - BOS: 28D
BOS - EWR: 28E

There are two pax on the reservation, does this mean one seat change wasn't made? Or neither can be made? The flights are almost 3 weeks out.

If nothing else, it could always be a glitch. You could call UA and have them sort it out.

But is the itinerary only UA? Was it booked through UA? If it was booked through another airline, there can sometimes be issues.

Just a heads up, as far as the hotel world is concerned, we are not allowed to make any changes what-so-ever to any third party booked reservations without prior express consent from the third party (which means approximately 30 minutes on hold for hotel support and additional time with which the OP is contacted to verify that the change has been verified with the OP).

With Halloween in sight, I thought I would share this particular insight of wisdom. Oddly enough, I have had a person pass away in my hotel before. If you would like to spend the night in the "haunted house" please contact me via PM for the full story.

US doesn't permit advance seat assignment on Shuttle flights between BOS-LGA, BOS-DCA and LGA-DCA. Perhaps UA is doing the same thing BOS-EWR

Thank you for the links, the consensus from those threads seemed to that the message was a bug.

My goal was to get my kid a window seat instead of a middle seat, not upgrade him. I'll log into the reservation again later today and see what it did with the seats. Expedia had assigned us seats when I made the purchase, so this is a route with pre-assigned seating.
