So SFO-RNO will be 192
there is never a 250 min for any UA MP flyer on an UA operated flight

If he's that close, United *may* just give him the Silver status, but that depends on goodwill from United. You may want to look into the cost of the Premier Accelerator option on that flight. If the rates hold true, it may be ten's of dollars, and depending on how often you expect your son to fly in 2014, that may be worth it.
