however I'm very disappointed with my PHX-LHR search query. I picked some random Tuesday-Wednesday (8 days) at the end of FEBRUARY and out of three pages of search results that came back there is ZERO availability to redeem a GPU. All results are "waitlist only" and yes this is buying a W fare + GPU.

What gives? This should be the easiest time of year to redeem awards. Please tell me I'm doing something wrong. If I'm not I stand by my earlier post that they are effectively useless.

It's rare to find upgrade space that far in advance. Not saying it should be rare. Just that it is.

I've never bought a GPU but I think the going rate is $300 or so. That's pretty low for something that provides an international upgrade and it reflects the difficulty of redeeming them.

Not useless-just very difficult. You may be searching too far out. Also need to search by segment. And try different routings. And days. And years.

It's even more complicated than that. I have seen cases where V fares were cheaper than W fares and they are eligible for GPUs. If you search on W only, you may be paying too much, but that is rare.

The worst part is waitlisting anxiously for months, coming down to waiting at the gate, and failing to clear. ... and wasting hundreds of dollars for the privilege...

Not useless. Many of us manage to burn all six every year. Easier TPAC than TATL.

Feb 17 IAH-IAD-LHR R is available. If you're flexible, R can be found, but, yes, most dates are waitlist.

You will have to call to do this -- no one here can really answer these questions. Waiting is a bad idea, R space can disappear quickly.

So you need to do it segment by segment (as another posted said). I have no problem doing this but with UA frowning on, if not declining to, process segments that aren't married?

So i can apply an RDU to a R fare and apply a GPU to a W (minimum) correct? I'll need to mix and match RDU/GPU/R/W..jesus what a cluster.

:confused: no. GPU and RPU both clear into R for 1Ks. For an RPU you can buy any booking class and upgrade and for intercontinental travel using a GPU you need W or higher.
Upgrades clear for EACH segment; married segment logic does not apply. When checking online on united.com it will only show 'R' if all flights have 'R' available (same for every other booking class as well). You may need to check for each segment if you want to know whether it will clear right away.

I am flying LH 441 on 10/25 in D, and applied a GPU for O Class. I saw on united.com that it is available in saver awards, however I am still on waitlist. Shouldn't this have cleared?

As I understand it, the GPU clears into a subset of O on LH.

As the wiki says, O availability is a "strong indicator" the upgrade will clear, but not a guarantee. Good luck!

I bought ticket and used saver award for the person traveling with me who doesn't have any MP status. 1k desk said to ask to get on upgrade list with travel companion at time of check in. Should I use my RPU or I should I just wait to checkin so both of us can get upgraded together? EWR-MIA

you can't upgrade an award ticket as a 1K. You can waitlist for IN and if IN becomes available upon paying the difference in miles you can get your companion into IN.

I thought award tickets are eligible for upgrade if you have Chase MP?
Though probably at the bottom of the upgrade list.
