Two days before departure. IAD-SFO.

GS supported by PP. No.4 on a long WL with 2 J seats open.

One way C fare is $2,460. Upgrade offer: $538.

Took the offer. It's a no brainer. Nice 777-200 flat bed on a six hour flight.

Won't clear the WL.

Smart move.

I'm guessing the 3 ahead of you had higher fare class as I can't see otherwise why you as a GS using PP wouldn't be right at the top.

Situations like this simply make status-chasing silly.

Whether it's $5K for Silver, $10K for Gold, $15K for Plat or $24K for 1K, none justifies the price given such limited benefits.

I'm happy to play the game designed by United. The spending requirements for ALL elites are absurd.

Status should be thought of something earned mostly as a result of money/travel you have spent/done anyways. Otherwise, it's never going to seem worth it.

Just saw BOS-SFO upgrade offer for $399.

Took the offer in a heart beat for the whole family.

This is also a very tough route for upgrades, let alone everyone in the family.

Was it an u/g to a lie=flat? (hopefully :) )

It says 757-200 showing 16 F seats. Feb. 3 BOS-SFO.

The seat maps for this kind of plane are messed up. I thought it would be a flat bed.

If it's actually a 757-200 you will get a flat bed. There are no 757-200s without flat beds in the fleet.

All 752 have lie-flat seats 2x2

Recently UA for 752 / 753 have had to block some seats due a DoT / FAA ruling on passenger winter weights, this may have caused this seatmap icon issue
Changes in 752 / 753 seatmaps -- some blocked middles, wrong lie-flat icon

I'm on a BOS-SFO flight in a few days. The icons in the seat map for F were originally as if they were non-lie-flats but have since updated to indicate they are lie flats. I suspect your seat map will eventually fix itself.

Well, just checked the seat map.

It's still messed up.

CLE-RSW next week, the upgrade offer has been $500+ with 1 seat left. Randomly checked tonight and the price dropped to $199 with 2 seats open. Took it.
The last seat in F is now selling for $1248.

Edit: forgot to mention I'm on an award ticket.

Either way, UA still wants more of your money.

Cash Upgrade to Polaris Business Now for 3/2023 EWR to JNB Flight or Wait?

I'm flying direct Newark to Johannesburg on March 8, 2023, and am wondering if I should do a cash upgrade from Economy to UA Polaris Business now or wait until the flight gets closer? I rarely fly UA, so I do not have status and only have limited miles. It is currently $1,654 per person for a cash upgrade, which I would be willing to pay but obviously want a lower price.

The seating chart shows 25 available business class seats. Based on your experience with United, will the $1,654 upgrade price go up or go down as we get closer?

While not perfectly correlated for sticker type upgrades, 3 months out the buy up will generally correlate to whatever is going on with fares. That flight is Z9P0, so they're willing to sell some pretty deeply discounted business fares (and by correlation, some discounted buy ups), but not the cheapest they can go to. Depending what happens with ongoing bookings, there is room for the price to go down some more if they still have low bookings and open up some P inventory. It is also possible this is the lowest it will go if that flight starts to fill up.

Personally, anything around the $100/hour of flight block time is something I think is reasonable for a buyup.
