I always wince when people call that American, I mean Belgian, fluid beer.

You can tell them apart.

While there's a CFR stating that vodka is supposed to be without distinctive character, aroma, taste, or color it is pretty easy to tell two vodkas apart, particularly if the vodkas are distilled from different sources (Wheat, rye, grapes, etc.). Put a glass of Ciroc (grapes) and a glass of Grey Goose (wheat) in front of me and I won't even need to taste them to tell them apart. I can smell the difference (assuming I haven't already had several that is... ;)). My GF has a much more sensitive nose and palate than I do and she can almost always tell the difference between two vodkas.

What matters is how good the vodka tastes and what you're going to do with it.

The moment that you add an equal amount of mixer, even plain soda, to any vodka the quality of the vodka (unless truly awful) pretty much ceases to matter. IMO good vodka does matter in a VERY dry 'up' martini. People who insist on Grey Goose in their Cosmopolitans are wasting their money.

I used to be able to get it in the US. Last time I brought it to a vodka tasting, it smoked Ciroc, Grey Goose, Chopin and Belvedere among the people who sampled it.

There are some very good inexpensive vodkas out there. In addition to Wyborowa I'll add Luksusowa, Pinnacle, and Platinum as vodkas I like to drink. All can be had for about one third the price of the 'premium' brands.

The problem with buying vodka is that it's a bit like buying stereo equipment. You pay a huge premium to get that little bit of extra something on the high end and many people don't perceive the difference anyway.

Stoli
Ketel One
Absolut
Finlandia (I guess I must...)
Skyy (really, do I have to?)
Charbay Distillers (it's twice been Spirit Journal's No. 1 vodka in the world!)
Russian Standard

Smearnoff - no
Grey Goose - not my taste, no
Svedka? NO!

and then, things might get really crazy....

Sign me up!

Airline beer... .

I'm with you. Lived in Chicago awhile and I was good w/Goose. Have lots of other favs these days (just found a store w/Bells beer around here!), but seriously there aren't many beers that are worse than the present. But heh, lots of people like miller and company.

I tried the margarita last night just to see what it was like- not very good at all. Only 13% alcohol content and tasted really bad. I liked the Stirrings options (my UX flight still had a supply) and I've had their margarita mix which is pretty good. I guess UA doesn't want to board tequila...

So would I but I don't think UA would ever buy it for us haha.

They should take a page from LH since they do offer it along with an XO cognac.

I like Goose Island beers too and would drink a ton of Honkers Ale if it were on united. But realistically they need a beer in cans and which is widely available at least at domestic hubs without having to fly it around themselves. The beer that might meet both these criteria is fat tire, but even then I don't know how widely available the canned version is.

Crap beer, crap scotch, so hard to refrain from saying "crap airline" to end that sentence :td:

FWIW, Tilton's group didn't buy it for us either. All I know is that I had it on my first trip in UA Int'l F in 1996 to HKG, prior to being served caviar and Chateaubriand.

Ah, the good old days! :)

For those that it matters to, cashless cabin is also coming to all UAX carriers in the next month or two. We were told October for us here at ExpressJet, and they are standardizing liquor between everyone.

I'm still in shock over this -- it looks like Smisek wants to bring UAX up to COEX standards. A change I like. ^

I second the idea of improving the scotch and the beer... but vodka? Meh.

A reference to Veblen! Fabulous! You must be a college professor. You are certainly widely educated. Bravo. I did extensive work on Veblen in graduate school. My post has nothing to do with UA, just thanking you for giving me hope that there is some intellect left around here!

My two cents -- they keep running out of Canadian Club and that's irritating as hell. My other drink -- gin -- they have replaced a classically flavored gin (Tanqueray and Beefeater are the classics IMO) with a floral (Bombay Sapphire). Lots of people like it but I'd prefer the classic. So if I were going to let ideas about liquor ruin my opinion of the airline I'd be ranting about how they MUST board Crown Royal and Tanqueray and nothing else.

I have to think that whoever picked this menu drinks a lot more gin than anything else--at an equivalent level of quality/cost, the bourbon selection would be Knob or Maker's instead of Jim Beam.

Bud is a big step up from MGD. Miller domestics are junk.

I was sort of hoping they would keep Corona Extra, but Bud heavy is alright with me.

That's a good point. Not many microbreweries put their stuff in cans, and now that the big guys are buying them up, it seems like a less likely proposition.

The annoying thing is that a bottle of Maker's Mark only costs a few dollars more than a bottle of Jim Beam. BevMo has 'em for $13 and $17 respectively.

If the airline is gonna be charging seven bucks a pop for it, then it's practically all profit... which is fine with me, it's no more than you'd pay in a bar anyway. But to my way of thinking if they shifted the booze up a grade (Maker's instead of Jim Beam, Chivas instead of Dewar's) then they'd wind up selling more booze. I wouldn't pay for a bad drink in the sky, but I'd definitely pay for a decent one, on occasion. If the only whisky option is Dewar's then I can wait 'til I'm on the ground, but if it's Macallan then, hey, I'll take it!

So buying cheap booze to sell at a $6-a-shot profit rather than slightly better booze to sell at a $5.70-a-shot profit it really a false economy.
