Not sure if you're being serious or not, but I've often thought that there would be a good business opportunity for someone to open a clean, pay for use lavatory only facility in very busy cities.

This was tried on Oxford Street 3-4 years ago. It lasted 6 months before going into administration.

Finchley Road and West Hampstead also have public lavatories.

Well, glad it was someone else's money, then!

Not enough bums on seats.

Well I didn't rent a car, so I didn't come across anything like that. I don't want to drive on the left and shift with my left hand. Is the gas pedal on the right or are those reversed too with gas on left and clutch on right? That would make it extra fun to learn if I ever want to drive there.

You keep trotting out these euphemisms. Methinks the OP doth protest too much. :D

Fair enough. I guess it's funny that this is the only part of my trip I have mentioned on FT when overall it was awesome and the UK was fun to visit. I will post a positive when I put up a TR this weekend. If there's one thing the TR forum doesn't have enough of, it's TRs of LH F and the FCT. Well I will finally fill that void and post one of my own.

But seriously, what are the positions of the pedals in cars?

Thanks.

I can deal with that. Thanks.

Driving on the left isn't such a big deal. When you're sitting on the right, it just feels natural to drive on the left. I had an easier time of it in the UK than in Australia, as my hire car in the UK had the turn signal lever on the left side of the steering column like in the US. In Australia, it was on the right, so I kept turning on the wipers instead of indicating my intent to turn. If the pedals were in a different order, I don't think I would be willing to drive a right-hand-drive/left side of the road car.

Try Harrods on the ladies couture floor - it is very similar!

I do think that it would be worthwhile opening a premium and paid for chain of ladies lavatories and dressing rooms.

Charge GBP 5 for admittance during the day and maybe GBP 10 and have plenty of clean lavatories and a separate powder room with plenty of seats and mirrors.

Also have fresh flowers, linen towels and a selection of amenities. And of course it would be well lit inside and around the entrance.

I am sure that many ladies would pay for such a facility.

That's too bad, it's really quite easy. Making the change from driving on the right side of the road to the left just requires you to realize that there's a whole car width to your immediate left that you're responsible for not hitting something with. It's simply a change of perspective that you pick up very quickly.

The are many public bogs in the UK, both underground and overground and, while you wouldn't eat your dinner off the floor, the vast majority Ive ever used have been safe and good enough to use. Getting any type of hassle or unwanted advances would be very rare indeed, and imagine highly location-specific so I'd hate for potential UK visitors to be in any way put off popping in for a slash based on the OP's experience in one solitary particular location.

That said, there are not enough public bogs around, so unless you know where they are ahead of time chances are you'll need to avail yourself somehow else. Major railways stations are a good bet, although increasingly they have started to charge - which usually leads to better cleanliness but I avoid nonetheless as I will not pay to pee. Next best are pubs, and major chain hotels. Failing that McDonalds will do.

There's a reason it's called 'spend a penny'!
