SEA1K4EVER,
I think the issue is that you set off the metal detector due to metal. So you're allowed to divest yourself of the metal and try again. If the metal detector goes off with a "random" beep, you are sent to the full-body scanner. I do hope that this change to the "random" procedure will be short-lived. |

CDKing,
I hear you. But they also seemed pretty set on backscatter, "only one chance" at the metal detector, children, the elderly, mandatory gate screening for every flight, and the "name game." So I'm trying to be a little bit more optimistic. And I'm a deeply cynical guy. |

Random beep at Pre-Check at ORD (UA) this morning. Told new procedure was the nude-o-scope. Told them to forget it. Give me my stuff back and I'll leave.
The sup then asked if the swab was okay. Fine with that. ^ Beeped and was offered additional screening. I declined and the man quite happily (but not too happily lol) patted me down all over. I much prefer that. |
I've had both. In LAS, I walked through, somehow set off the metal detector with nothing on me, was directed to walk back through and instead of a beep got "selected" for a random at which point I was directed to the porno-scanner (opted-out and got a cursory pat down, where they chose to ignore the fact that I was still wearing my belt).
In SFO, got a beep and they asked me for a handswipe. Thirty seconds later I was on my way. |
tsa pre-check more "random" extra screening?
Add IAD to the list of simple soldiers just following orders by patting you down randomly.

According to a TSA employee with whom I spoke last week, it is now SOP to send PreCheck passengers getting the random long beep at the WTMD through the body scanners. If a body scanner is not available, you still get the hand swab, as at LGA UA terminal last week.

With the new protocol its supposed to be a modified body scan. Shoes and the like still stay on along with belts.

And what's the deal for those with injured shoulders and the like? Any experiences yet?

Just went through the checkpoint near the entrance to the D and N gates at SEA-TAC. That checkpoint has no full-body imaging, so random beeps were treated with hand swabs.
I know which checkpoint I'll be using on my next trip! |

And then a perp frisk after? Almost feels like things were better for injured travelers before pre. New system totally defeats the propose. Only plus seems to be that getting frisked no longer seems to involve hands in pants.
