NEXUS transborder at YVR security

This is the third time I've come through on a Friday afternoon and have had to hang out in regular line at security before CBP because there is no Nexus / priority CATSA line. What gives, YVR?

i specifically tell them I'm NEXUS and usually the put me in the shortest lane.

FlyerGoldII Nov 22, 2013 4:47 pm

Are you talking about domestic-transborder connections, when neither CATSA security nor US CBP preclearance have nexus/GE lanes or service?

lowdown Nov 22, 2013 5:18 pm

Um, no. I'm talking like I just got off the Canada Line and am going in landside to airside as much of an originating passenger as I've ever been.
Years out of YYZ conditioned me that there would be a nexus line and if not at the least a priority line for ac*se and *e. four times out of transborder YVR since moving here and I've yet to breeze through like at Pearson.

Talked to one of the catsa guards, she says it's entirely up to them and optional.

Also, Only one of the nexus machines was working today. A general fail this PM!

You know you can use GE machines, right?

That's not necessarily true...

What do you mean? If you have NEXUS, you are enrolled in GE (or are generally automatically enrolled).

---

Totally not related to this conversation, but apparently one of YVRs domestic checkpoints (I assume the AC C-Gates Checkpoint) have a pilot eGate to access security for NEXUS/Trusted Travellers. Anyone seen this?

I think you can only use GE if you've had your fingerprints recorded. It has always worked for me.

I've used the eGate a couple of times. You have to pay attention to the scanning instructions to get the sequence right (BP then Nexus card), but it seems to work. At least it eliminates one of the minions checking BPs two yards before the next one does .

No, NEXUS does not necessarily get you GE. I was asked if I wanted GE during my interview.

And as Sopwith said, it's all moot if you haven't had your fingerprints taken.

As for that checkpoint, I've used it. It's only open when it's "busy", so not when I'm usually there :(

Absolutely know I can use GE. And yes, they have my prints. Have used it in the past before without an issue.

YVR this PM: two NEXUS, two GE machines. One Nexus Machine that had a sign saying it was out of order. One GE machine frozen on the "Take your slip and go to the exit" screen. One GE machine that showed a white screen, no input.

One working NEXUS machine.

C'mon Flyertalkers. I'm an FF... I know what I'm talking about. General fail this PM. No NEXUS security line and 1/4 GE/NEXUS machines is a fail at YVR for sure.

CTV news did a story on the NEXUS lanes at YVR

http://bc.ctvnews.ca/malfunctioning-...ints-1.1545426

Also I just received an email from NEXUS on Nov 22

This official NEXUS Newsletter provides members with up-to-date information including new program enhancements.

What’s New?

NEXUS Lanes at the Land Border

As part of Beyond the Border commitments, an additional NEXUS lane has been added in Canada at Fort Erie, Ontario; Pacific Highway, British Columbia; and Queenston, Ontario.

For information on NEXUS lane hours of operation, visit www.nexus.gc.ca.

Canadian Air Transport Security Authority (CATSA) benefits

NEXUS dedicated lines for Canadian Air Transport Security Authority (CATSA) security screening, Trusted Traveller CATSA Security Lines (TTCSL) have been expanded to include select mid-sized airports. For a complete list of all airports that offer this benefit, visit
http://catsa.gc.ca/Page.aspx?ID=122&...apides&lang=en.

Please be aware of what you can and cannot bring into the TTCSL. Failure to comply can result in delays at the airport. http://catsa.gc.ca/Page.aspx?ID=58&p...ticles&lang=en

CATSA eGate at Vancouver International Airport

NEXUS members travelling through Vancouver International Airport’s domestic north checkpoint may notice a new procedure for validating NEXUS cards. CATSA is piloting an eGate that will verify your membership card and boarding pass electronically.

The eGate is positioned at the front of the Trusted Traveller screening line. It uses a touch screen that will prompt you to scan your boarding pass and NEXUS card to gain access to the screening area.

Transportation Security Administration (TSA) Pre-Check expanded to more U.S. airports

Pre-Check allows expedited security screening for domestic travel within the U.S. Canadian NEXUS members now enjoy TSA Pre-Check at 40 airports for domestic travel within the United States as well as international flights, including to Canada, when flying on the following airlines:

Alaska Airlines
American Airlines
Delta Air Lines
Hawaiian Airlines
United Airlines
US Airways, and
Virgin America.
For a list of participating airports see: http://www.tsa.gov/tsa-precheck/tsa-...ating-airports.
Reminder: Your Membership Obligations

Failure to comply with program obligations, including the updating of personal data and documents, may result in card revocation. Consult the NEXUS Member’s Guide so that you are fully aware of your membership obligations:

http://www.cbsa-asfc.gc.ca/publicati...f5095-eng.html.

Did You Know?

No appointment is required to have your iris captured. If you have not done so, please visit a NEXUS Enrolment Centre today. This will allow you to use NEXUS self-serve kiosks for expedited entry into Canada or the U.S. at Canada’s eight major international airports.

If you have not done so already, please visit a NEXUS or Global Entry (GE) Enrolment Center, and have your fingerprints taken – no appointment necessary. All NEXUS members receive GE privileges, including use of GE kiosks, if we have your 10 fingerprints on file.

If you are a Canadian or U.S. citizen, you can use your NEXUS card when travelling by land, marine or air within or between Canada and the United States.

If travelling internationally, a passport is required.

The "nexus" line at YVR often is very slow. Considering nexus card holders are supposedly "trusted travelers", CATSA doesn't do anything substantive for nexus holders, like for example, TSA pre-check. I talked to someone CATSA about this issue and he agreed there was a problem, but said he didn't know how long it would take to address it.

I don't remember being asked if I wanted to use GE. When it was opened up to nexus card holders, I tried it and it just worked. Now, I always use GE rather than nexus to avoid having to fill in the US customs declaration form on paper. Canada can't get rid of the nexus kiosks soon enough for me. I agree completely with the post that the nexus kiosks at yvr are unreliable and often down.

LOL, fair enough.
And very interesting about the malfunctioning machines story on CTV.

Thanks, all. I was just trying to see if anyone had similar experiences with good ol' YVR transborder. Sounds like they haven't got the whole "streamlined trusted traveller experience" sorted out like (I swear I never thought I'd say I missed it) YYZ transborder. :)

Went through Tues morning at 8:30 and the security line backed up past where the scan your boarding pass. They said Nexus line was closed. I turned around and came back 90mins later and even though the Nexus line was still closed there was nobody in line and I walked straight up to security. The line has been closed in the past as well and opening times seem to be quite subjective. One machine was broken as well.
