Old and new countries
Things have been a little quiet on my end in recent weeks as I've been working intensively on a trip report. This time, I traveled a little further east to Slovenia and Croatia, which I had never visited before. The trip was rounded off with Italy, where I visited the Trieste region, which was new to me, and the familiar Lombardy region.
Specifically, the following accommodations awaited me: 7 nights at the Intercontinental Ljubljana 5 nights at the Tivoli Sistiana Portopiccolo 4 nights at the Grand Park Rovinj 2 nights at L'Albereta Erbusco |
Toll!
Before we could really get going, we had to pay the toll. I have a Telepass for Italy, but it's not valid in Croatia. That's how you pay there. But that's not all. First, you have to buy a day pass for Austria (€9.30), plus the toll for the A10 Tauern motorway (€14.50) and the Karawanken tunnel (€8.50). With the monthly vignette for Slovenia (€32.00) and the annual vignette for Switzerland (40 francs), it all adds up.

Rosehill Foodpark Eisentratten
Let's get started right away. I have rarely written a report about a rest stop before. I don't intend to do so this time either, but they were very proud of their panoramic terrace here. To be fair, the surroundings are really beautiful and it's fun to drive here.

IC Ljubljana
Ljubljana isn't exactly blessed with top hotels, so I chose the Intercontinental. Apart from the Intercontinental, there is only one other 5-star hotel in the city, the Grand Plaza opposite. The hotel is located in a high-rise building that it has all to itself, so a touch of the big wide world.
https://cimg8.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...d882fe31f2.jpg https://cimg9.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...fc656a3c49.jpg https://cimg0.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...3edd1cc215.jpg https://cimg5.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...62ca99b7e4.jpg https://cimg6.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...1c6eaa4c2c.jpg https://cimg7.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...d36ca54cc3.jpg The lobby is quite modern, although not really appealing to me. https://cimg5.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...3751cdb8e5.jpg Since groups often stay at the hotel, the lobby can sometimes resemble a zoo. It's definitely not an Aman, but then again, it doesn't have Aman prices either. https://cimg8.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...d9a8e8b050.jpg https://cimg9.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...2cfa4d560c.jpg But there are cocktail classes. https://cimg1.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...cd8b6a79c4.jpg Incidentally, birthday parties in the presidential suite were advertised with the following photo: https://cimg0.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...843be40d1b.jpg Probably only profoundly evil people like me wonder whether the lady is included. For me, this is an example of when marketing goes really wrong. |
I'm looking forward to learning what sightseeing you did with the IC as a base and how helpful the concierge team was in organizing it.

Mrs jmj9905 and I were in Ljubljana in 2022. While we didn't stay in the IC we had an incredible VRBO right in the heart of the city. It is very walk able and very beautiful. The restaurants are also very incredible. I would recommend this city to anybody who wants to get off the beaten path.

I stayed in the Grand Plaza opposite the other year. I'll yet see about the rooms, but if nothing else, the lobby was actually spacious. That reception shot is giving me claustrophobia, even without the crowd.

I actually spent some time considering whether to book the One Bedroom Suite or the Presidential Suite. In the end, I opted for the One Bedroom Suite, as one night in the Presidential Suite wasn't unaffordable, but seven nights in the One Bedroom Suite cost about the same as one night in the Presidential Suite. That's a bit much. It must also be said that the Presidential Suite isn't all that spectacular, so there's no need to break the bank. Hier the floor plans:
https://cimg7.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...f6d9b2369b.jpg https://cimg8.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...ad99965015.jpg And who knows, as a Platinum Ambassador, you actually have the chance of an upgrade. In the end, of course, there was no upgrade, but 10,000 points. That's just how it is. Our suite was number 508, so it was on the 5th floor. The 5th floor of 20 isn't exactly thrilling, but the type of suite we had was only available on the lower floors, so the 5th was the highest. Inside, you first entered a small hallway with a closet, which had plenty of storage space. To the right was the bathroom. The floor-to-ceiling windows in the bathroom were essentially unusable because anyone could see inside, but it was still a good bathroom. Sure, there was only one sink, but otherwise it was large and neatly equipped. https://cimg4.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...1f7c96937b.jpg https://cimg9.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...0d1d9005ca.jpg https://cimg1.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...29bf272906.jpg https://cimg8.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...1f4249b551.jpg https://cimg5.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...07fe48c13d.jpg https://cimg7.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...058321af4c.jpg On the opposite side, we went into the bedroom. That was generally fine too, but the bed was more like a wooden board than a mattress. I have rarely experienced such a hard bed. https://cimg6.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...073e3504b0.jpg https://cimg7.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...0bfa7f088f.jpg https://cimg8.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...e5fc51e30a.jpg https://cimg9.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...6becc24cf3.jpg Not only did the cabinet have a crack in the door at the bottom, but the door had also popped out of its hinges. I managed to fix it after fiddling around with it for a while, but that's not something you need to deal with on vacation. https://cimg9.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...0cd5b9cf2c.jpg One of the photos already shows the problem with the living room. It opens onto the bedroom and is more like a small extension of the room with a sofa. For me, this is a junior suite, but certainly not a one-bedroom suite. https://cimg0.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...65362cbda1.jpg https://cimg1.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...b4e4fa0e05.jpg The biggest problem, however, was the lighting concept. It wasn't possible to control the living room separately. Either the lights in the bedroom and living room were on, or they were off in both areas (including most of the power outlets). Really annoying when one person wants to relax in bed and the other wants to hang out in the living room. Really annoying. The view was nothing special, but you could (as well as from the restaurant and the Club lounge) look into rooms at the Grand Plaza were the curtains weren´t closed. You could also look in the suites in the floors under us, including naked people walking around. https://cimg3.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...eabdc2fa2f.jpg https://cimg5.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...91c44e73dc.jpg https://cimg7.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...b842ece47c.jpg |
Somewhat similar decor. What's with the dark, brown themes in these two hotels? Seems very of it's time to me.
Although on balance, I would say the IC room looks ever so slightly better. |

Intercontinental Ljubljana
The Interconti also has a wellness area. First, you walk through a corridor, then suddenly there is water. Your bathing shoes (hopefully your own plastic ones and not the fabric slipper from the hotel) are already wet.
https://cimg5.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...94dc0f7f2a.jpg The pool was usually full, and I never managed to get a sun lounger during my visits. But there is a window sill. Somehow, I never really warmed to the pool. The crowd was also a bit strange. Let's just say there were lots of thongs, Mr. Clean types, and tanned women. One woman, for example, sat in the whirlpool the whole time playing with her cell phone, but in a rather strange way. https://cimg9.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...b02770a890.jpg https://cimg0.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...7d0fa441ce.jpg |
I stayed at the IC this summer. Since I'm normally more of a Holiday Inn Express person I don't think I should review the hotel but I find these comments very useful when I compare to what my own stay was like.

Intercontinental Ljubljana B Restaurant
In the evening, we ate at the hotel restaurant, “B Restaurant.” It is located on the top floor and is also very popular with visitors. A taxi driver later told us proudly that she had once eaten there with her husband. The restaurant is very proud they have a plate at Guide Michelin.
It was quite crowded, so I took the photo later. http://cimg4.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.flye...1a9a2f9679.jpg The restaurant was actually quite nice, but unfortunately there was a jerk sitting a few seats away who was alternately talking on his speakerphone and watching videos with the sound on. Thirty years ago, someone like that would have been thrown out on their ear, and that should still be the case. I wish I had two burly guys I could signal to, and they would take care of the problem. It would be money well spent... The view wasn't as great as expected; there was a lot of glare, and you mainly looked out onto the hotel opposite. It was interesting to see people reading in bed, packing their things, or doing fitness exercises, but it wasn't that exciting. The menu. http://cimg5.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.flye...bfb0b07cd6.jpg http://cimg8.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.flye...69c423ddeb.jpg http://cimg6.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.flye...566d1352a6.jpg http://cimg7.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.flye...5673003e62.jpg http://cimg8.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.flye...f8e52ebd84.jpg http://cimg1.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.flye...7f685b2bcd.jpg Our waitress were very friendly. That´s something what stood out. Bread and beetroot dip (already touched, sorry). http://cimg3.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.flye...95e27f28db.jpg Blue Mango - Crisp salad, apple-caper dressing, bluefin tuna carpaccio, soft rice sheet, mago sorbet droplets http://cimg6.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.flye...1355020ff1.jpg It looked strange and almost unappetizing, but it tasted really good. Citrus Bloom - Vanilla-compressed pear, lemon-tyme marinated artichoke, fennel & ornge, roasted almond http://cimg0.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.flye...bdb91120d0.jpg http://cimg1.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.flye...3cd66f528b.jpg Also good. But unfortunately delicious. Ice cream http://cimg1.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.flye...5469880618.jpg Not great, not bad. Quite solid. Poached Pear - Vanilla crumble, almond biscuit, maraschino gel, pear sorbet, vanilla emulsion http://cimg5.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.flye...9acf901f4d.jpg http://cimg6.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.flye...3afd8bdfd8.jpg The bill. http://cimg8.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.flye...ec88cb2903.jpg It was a good meal, everything tasted great. Can be recommended. |

In general I also found Ljubljana to be a pleasant town to visit. I think you stay at higher end hotels more often than me and have a better feel for the quality if it's as expected but like I said I was happy. |

Intercontinental Ljubljana
Surprisingly, breakfast was included for us. First, there was a fairly large buffet.

Ljubljana castle
No, I didn't spend all my time at the Intercontinental. On the first day, Ljubljana was on the agenda, and we started at the castle. There are small museums in the castle. Otherwise, it's just a quite pleasant place.

Ah, I didn't know they lost the star, but not really surprised. I was not dissatisfied on my visit last year, but cracks were showing.

We took the tasting menu. https://cimg5.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...a3d2e9ae23.jpg Lemonade https://cimg7.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...07c5ecec6a.jpg https://cimg8.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...c2574cc256.jpg Amouse bouche https://cimg1.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...1a684af67b.jpg https://cimg3.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...20145e96eb.jpg Viatnamese salad roll https://cimg8.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...0847934cac.jpg https://cimg9.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...d076c9a9d6.jpg https://cimg0.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...d49f5a4133.jpg Fresh and good Grilled Black Tiger prawns - marinated in fresh herbs and chilli with mango sauce https://cimg8.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...4e3b0fb97d.jpg Also good Japanese miso soup with wakame seaweed and vegetables https://cimg2.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...c99cf2f80d.jpg Thai spicy soup Tom Yum with prawns and mushrooms https://cimg6.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...81a9a988c9.jpg https://cimg7.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...6f1583833e.jpg Both very good. Postojna Cave
The day started off terribly. Single-digit temperatures and rain galore. There wasn't much going on that day, so we decided to visit Postojna Cave (also known as Adelsberg Caves).
https://cimg0.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...2b0120ce29.jpg A combined ticket with Predjama Castle costs €46.50, so it's not exactly cheap. With the vivarium and museum, it's €56.50. Once you've passed through the ticket control, you head to the train that takes you to the cave. https://cimg6.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...25254b91f5.jpg https://cimg7.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...4968b8bd7d.jpg The journey is fast and windy. The speed makes it difficult to take photographs, and some of the passages seem quite low. It doesn't feel too good, anyway. https://cimg2.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...db9f919319.jpg https://cimg3.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...49ea66a121.jpg https://cimg5.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...9c9fbee6f9.jpg https://cimg6.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...5b11da2ebb.jpg https://cimg7.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...d702802b4a.jpg https://cimg9.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...8ada5e0a8f.jpg https://cimg0.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...a55e11a394.jpg https://cimg1.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...5cd13cce53.jpg From the parking area, we proceeded through the cave. The group consisted of approximately 300 people, making it a truly large-scale operation. There is a 90-minute tour of the cave, accompanied by an audio guide. https://cimg6.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...7444515540.jpg https://cimg7.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...38f0400679.jpg https://cimg8.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...42429750de.jpg https://cimg9.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...4439720f6d.jpg https://cimg0.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...aa69c04f60.jpg https://cimg1.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...80d91f0a49.jpg https://cimg2.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...59d0cf8f49.jpg https://cimg4.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...a51314c8ad.jpg https://cimg5.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...313d200a81.jpg https://cimg6.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...c05c4d42e2.jpg https://cimg7.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...90c896dfdc.jpg https://cimg9.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...ec266cd388.jpg https://cimg0.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...488a39d826.jpg https://cimg2.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...cbc304f8b3.jpg https://cimg3.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...0efbe7b3bd.jpg https://cimg5.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...2c753fadb1.jpg https://cimg6.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...86275daf4d.jpg https://cimg7.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...aa9602ff31.jpg https://cimg8.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...860c6b7157.jpg https://cimg9.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...f2b43197ac.jpg https://cimg0.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...ff8b2ffdef.jpg https://cimg1.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...4ea4ce1c10.jpg https://cimg4.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...e3038c0e12.jpg https://cimg6.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...6cb30134ac.jpg https://cimg8.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...365bdb9a98.jpg https://cimg9.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...da8c92bf56.jpg https://cimg2.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...843b2719ca.jpg https://cimg5.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...84a97b765a.jpg https://cimg6.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...4619affa9b.jpg https://cimg7.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...96b72ff438.jpg https://cimg8.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...261bd005e4.jpg https://cimg9.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...32cf42c08b.jpg https://cimg0.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...96558d6dd5.jpg https://cimg1.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...f83f5eb91a.jpg https://cimg2.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...2117833bf6.jpg https://cimg3.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...924c0093e8.jpg There is not only a souvenir shop in the large cave, but also a toilet. Considering the admission prices, it is somewhat outrageous to charge a euro for this. https://cimg1.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...58c65f97be.jpg We then took the little train back. https://cimg5.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...f5a72a1380.jpg |
My son has been wanting to go to Slovenia. I may have to go just to see this in person!

It was in Post #24 above. Thanks to tom tulpe for the tip on the actual church. It appears to be about a half hour south of Trieste, so we may add a side trip from there to our journey.

Holy Trinity Church in Hrastovlje, Slovenia. There's a replica in Ljubljana (National Gallery)

We visited the Lipica Stud Farm in Lipica, Slovenia, also a short distance from Trieste and 40 minutes north of the church. It takes half a day to see performances of the Lipizzaner stallions who are commonly seen in Vienna. Well worth a visit.
