It’s 18:30 and my taxi is booked for 03:30 so its going to be an early night (hopefully). Time to head back to the hotel and pack the room up.
|
Good morning from Kosice where it is 3:30am! I ended up getting nowhere near as much sleep as I would have liked and the sleep was often broken by that ‘what time is it now?’ game that happens when I have a really early departure… does that happen to you?
Taxi was ready and waiting outside the hotel, €30 to the airport, organised by the hotel. What I find really interesting is that there is absolutely zero traffic on the road. This is a decent sized city and there is not a car to be seen. Next Stop: Košice Airport |
I suspected from the outside that I was way early and so it turned out. Security was a matter of less than two minutes… I’ve finally found an airport that is faster than Newcastle!
The bigger surprise is that duty free, the shop, magazine stall, and cafe are all open for business https://cimg0.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...f0a518cea.jpeg https://cimg1.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...514a3b013.jpeg https://cimg2.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...17e29e898.jpeg https://cimg3.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...256e024dc.jpeg https://cimg4.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...4109b476f.jpeg https://cimg5.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...c31d237a7.jpeg And I’m happy to report that the coffee shop makes a really good cup of coffee https://cimg9.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...472895424.jpeg |
I’m slipping, I didn’t even check for a lounge! The lounge is up on the first floor and is much as you would expect with mostly pre-packaged snack food. It is surprisingly spacious and there were just two people in there

Boarding commenced on time and it was a short walk to the plane which wide nicely silhouetted by the pre dawn sun
https://cimg7.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...75346131d.jpeg 14A on the Embraer E95 and we saw all the collateral on the way out. Lots of announcements that the flight is fully booked but right now with most people on board 14C remains empty, can I get 4 out of 4 for empty seats beside me? Next Stop: Vienna in about an hours time. |
All on board and 4 out of 4 it is!
Captains announcement that he is expecting to depart on time for this 40 minute hop to Vienna. One of the ground agents is having an attack of the grumpies, she is trying to find a passenger and there has already been some seat swapping going on. She has disappeared to the back of the plane so whatever she is trying to sort out hopefully doesn’t delay us. |
We were off the ground maybe ten minutes late but made most of that up in the air. The flight was literally straight up and down again, and the crew had time to distribute water and chocolates before it was time to prepare for landing.
https://cimg5.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...94ff093d4.jpeg Great gate positioning, less than a minutes walk to F34 and my next flight to Dusseldorf which starts boarding in 10 minutes https://cimg7.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...689e6f8c1.jpeg |
They’ve just made an announcement for €250 to take a later flight. Unfortunately I’m working this afternoon or I’d be tempted. This does mean that my streak of empty seats beside me is certain to be broken :D
|
No great surprise that it is bus gate this morning, and the standard rush from the bus to the steps. 14A again for this VIE-DUS leg.
https://cimg5.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...662ed89bd.jpeg One thing I have noticed and appreciated on Austrian Airlines is that when you board the bins for the exit row are closed and they are jealously guarded by the crew. The in flight lead popped down to say hi whilst we waited for the second bus load, and the rest of boarding I was chattering away to the lovely crew member stationed mid-plane It’s now 07:17 and the announcement that we are waiting one passenger. That seems a bit odd give the two bus loads already delivered, HON circle member perhaps? Update: an Austrian branded crew bus turned up, the driver then went to the plane next door and another bus turned up from over there, clearly they’d take the passenger to the wrong plane :D https://cimg6.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...77669fc2e.jpeg https://cimg7.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...0ad85d4e2.jpeg Next Stop: Düsseldorf in 90 minutes time, maybe. |
Again nothing much to report on the flight to Düsseldorf, a small coffee and a long snooze which was disturbed by the twenty minute to landing warning.
Off the plane and in the terminal at 9am, now time to see if I get Senator access with a Eurowings economy ticket. |
No problems accessing the same senator lounge as on the way out. It’s all set up for breakfast as you might expect and it’s a pretty basic affair, there isn’t even any decent bread.

It's more about it being half three on Monday morning. You'd get some traffic on the weekend at those times still, but it's not really a big enough city to have meaningful goings on that late on a Sunday night. And it's too early for morning traffic to be starting.
I didn't realize they moved the flight to 5:25 for this season though, else I would advise not leaving until 4. There's little point in being at the airport much more than 1 hour before departure, unless you are on a charter. |
Bored of the lounge I headed off on a failed mission to find lieberkase and then to the gate. Passport control was a breeze, two minutes at most, then came the Eurowings doc check…. There were well over 100 people in the queue, all of the tensa maze was loaded and they were queued down the stairs. I did a little bit of a queue jump quite accidentally by taking the lift and it still took over a quarter of an hour to get to the front of the queue, they were SLOW!
No surprise to anyone that it’s a bus gate again. https://cimg1.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...00a523208.jpeg Ten minutes to boarding and no bus, no staff. |
Plenty of gate lice for this one, all Geordie lads
https://cimg9.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...af9d54e22.jpeg At least 20 of them… it’s a bus so who cares :D |
