Moving Back to Colorado

After 5 years in Southern California, we're joining the mass exodus and leaving... for us heading back to Denver. Orange County was wonderful... except for the fact that is in California. Our OC home was under contract within 48 hours so I'm off for a quick one day trip to Denver to check out some houses that we liked, at least online. With a 3am wake-up call and a 5:30am flight, there was no way Mrs. SFO777 was making this trip. With no traffic on the 405, I made the 60 miles drive to LAX in 45 minutes. OMG, lots of other crazy people taking this flight.

SFO777 Apr 27, 2021 10:15 pm

I met SFO777Jr just outside door 612 on the departures level, and then headed out down Pena and E-470 south to Parker. While I had hoped to see four homes today, the Denver real estate market is as hot as if not hotter than Orange County as three of the four on our list were under contract by the time I landed. Yikes.

https://s3-us-west-1.amazonaws.com/s...IMG_4499_1.jpg

Nevertheless, it was good to see an area of the metro that we were not very famiiar with.

https://s3-us-west-1.amazonaws.com/s...IMG_4508_2.jpg

https://s3-us-west-1.amazonaws.com/sfo777/IMG_4507.jpg

There are some beautiful homes here but just not sure about the massive amount of ongoing construction. Some of the homes we liked, all under contract, but willing to take back up offers. Seriously?

https://s3-us-west-1.amazonaws.com/s...IMG_4501_4.jpg

https://s3-us-west-1.amazonaws.com/s...IMG_4502_1.jpg

https://s3-us-west-1.amazonaws.com/s...IMG_4513_1.jpg

https://s3-us-west-1.amazonaws.com/s...IMG_4520_3.jpg

After a few hours of exploring, we decided to stop for lunch. OK, now we're talking.

https://s3-us-west-1.amazonaws.com/s...IMG_4523_0.jpg

https://s3-us-west-1.amazonaws.com/s...IMG_4534_2.jpg

https://s3-us-west-1.amazonaws.com/s...IMG_4526_1.jpg

https://s3-us-west-1.amazonaws.com/s...IMG_4528_1.jpg

OMG, the smells were amazing.

https://s3-us-west-1.amazonaws.com/s...IMG_4532_2.jpg

https://s3-us-west-1.amazonaws.com/s...IMG_4535_1.jpg

And back home at Jr's place, our crazy platter.

https://s3-us-west-1.amazonaws.com/s...IMG_4538_1.jpg

At around 4:30pm, we headed out for the 25 minute drive to DIA where I made the mistake of heading for the North Security Checkpoint. Ugh.

https://s3-us-west-1.amazonaws.com/s...IMG_4539_1.jpg

After security, time for a quick stop at the Delta Sky Club.

https://s3-us-west-1.amazonaws.com/s...IMG_4540_1.jpg

https://s3-us-west-1.amazonaws.com/s...IMG_4542_2.jpg

https://s3-us-west-1.amazonaws.com/s...IMG_4543_3.jpg

https://s3-us-west-1.amazonaws.com/s...IMG_4550_2.jpg

https://s3-us-west-1.amazonaws.com/s...IMG_4546_1.jpg

The Sky Club has a much better selection of food than typical Admirals Clubs offerings.

https://s3-us-west-1.amazonaws.com/s...IMG_4547_1.jpg

https://s3-us-west-1.amazonaws.com/s...IMG_4548_0.jpg

https://s3-us-west-1.amazonaws.com/s...IMG_4549_1.jpg

https://s3-us-west-1.amazonaws.com/s...IMG_4551_1.jpg

While the main areas of the SkyClub were crowded, the room to the right of the main entrance was pleasantly empty.

https://s3-us-west-1.amazonaws.com/s...IMG_4552_1.jpg

https://s3-us-west-1.amazonaws.com/s...IMG_4553_0.jpg

The adjacent Admirals Club... not even open.

https://s3-us-west-1.amazonaws.com/s...IMG_4554_2.jpg

https://s3-us-west-1.amazonaws.com/s...IMG_4556_4.jpg

At T-45, I headed down to our gate.

Denver DEN to Los Angeles LAX
Delta DL 1005
737-800
6:32p-8:00p
March 7, 2021

While United has the earliest LAX-DEN flight, Delta offered the best option on my return, reasonably priced and seat blocking gets me an empty seat next to me.

https://s3-us-west-1.amazonaws.com/s...IMG_4558_1.jpg

https://s3-us-west-1.amazonaws.com/s...IMG_4560_0.jpg

Ancient 738 means actual padded seats, unlike the newer slim line seats.

https://s3-us-west-1.amazonaws.com/s...IMG_4561_1.jpg

But with small seat back video screens. But Good Morning?? LOL.

https://s3-us-west-1.amazonaws.com/s...IMG_4564_2.jpg

I sincerely hope not.

https://s3-us-west-1.amazonaws.com/s...IMG_4565_1.jpg

And the ridiculous new DL safety video with full frontal masking. Sheesh.

https://s3-us-west-1.amazonaws.com/s...IMG_4567_1.jpg

Beautiful night in Denver.

https://s3-us-west-1.amazonaws.com/s...IMG_4573_0.jpg

Delta's pathetic First Class domestic service consists of a back of water, Goldfish and Clif Bar, the same baggie handed out to all passengers . Fortunately, I was not hungry after my BBQ feast.

https://s3-us-west-1.amazonaws.com/s...IMG_4576_3.jpg

https://s3-us-west-1.amazonaws.com/s...IMG_4577_2.jpg

https://s3-us-west-1.amazonaws.com/s...IMG_4578_2.jpg

Delta doesn't even serve soft drinks on board, so I took an extra can from the SkyClub to enjoy in flight in my DIY tumbler. And the ice was a special order from the galley as DL doesn't even offer ice to passengers.

https://s3-us-west-1.amazonaws.com/s...IMG_4580_2.jpg

With an on time arrival, I was home in South County by 9pm. Great to see SFO777Jr and family but not a very productive house-hunting trip today.

Always enjoy your picturesque TRs SFO777. Best of luck on home hunting and move to Denver.

glasman19 Apr 28, 2021 10:05 am

Just showed your report to Mrs. Glasman. We are jealous!

With SB419 being a potential job killer here, the red hot real estate market, Miss Glasman CO based and the thought of keeping 7-9% of our money by Colorado’s decreased state income rate of 4.55% opposite California’s ridiculous double digit tier program - we are not far behind.

BTW, did you get any splinters with those Delta wood utensils?

safari ari Apr 28, 2021 11:52 am

Welcome back to CO. You'll find every Californian and their mother is buying up real estate over asking left and right with straight cash. All the best on the search.

Thanks glasman19. Totally agree. We figured what that we may as well cash out now while we can and escape. LOL on the wooden utensils. Those were actually Amex CL utensils. No utensils on DL since DL doesn't even serve meals.

Thanks so much safari ari. Yeah, that's what we're worried about. Hey ex-Californians, you're leaving for a reason. Don't bring that California crap with you.

I think your style is called ‚country lodge deluxe‘ or so :)

Good luck

Wasn't sure if this was going to make it in a TR or not. Was great getting to see you for breakfast in the Centurion Lounge! Sorry to hear your house hunting wasn't successful on day 1.

TravelerMSY Apr 28, 2021 4:01 pm

I was gonna ask how Amex let you in as an arriving passenger, but then I saw you were doing a day trip. And maybe they’re not strict about it anymore with Covid. Nice BBQ spread.

HawaiiFlyerDC8 Apr 28, 2021 7:57 pm

SFO. so glad you're providing some travel, meals, and apartment and house hunting, too. Looking forward to more of this.

seat38a Apr 29, 2021 3:51 am

Oh wow. I'm on Orange County as well and bailing for Colorado in September as well. But I'm looking more out in the burbs than in Denver metro.

CosmosHuman Apr 29, 2021 6:14 am

I have a few friends and a cousin who’ve left SoCal in the past year. Reasons being just wanted a new place to call home, job change, and tired of the lifestyle. I’d love to trade CLE for warmer weather, but looking at moving to Utah, Nevada, or Montana in the next year. Why? Retirement is the best reason I can give now. Sort of leaning towards the Las Vegas area. I very much enjoy your trip reports. Hope you find a place you can call HOME.

Yeah it took a while. Thanks wakesetter93. Good to meet you in the CL. How many times have you returned to ski?

Yeah, that BBQ spread was pretty outrageous. :)

We're ultimately going to wind up in the burbs, but figured that we'd rent in the city while we decided where and what.

Thank you CosmosHuman. We lived in Cleveland (east burbs) in the late 80's and 90's and really enjoyed it... everything but the weather that is. ;)

I think we only went back once after we saw you. The weather got warmer down here so we've been in full on boating mode on the weekends. I think the GF will be back up there next weekend for one more run and to return our rental skis.

Back to Denver Round 2

Our first sale contract fell thru when the buyer's bank preapproval turned out to be not worth the paper it was printed on. We immediately went back into contract with a more solid buyer and all contingencies have been removed, so this one looks like it might be a go. So Mrs. SFO777 and I are headed back to Denver, this time to look for an apartment to rent for a year, while we figure where we want to buy or build, and for the market to cool down or crash. With only few ridiculously priced SNA-DEN flights ($1,000+ one way First... LOL), we're off to LAX where competition produces many more flights at reasonble $200 one way First prices. Unlike a few weeks ago, today LAX was overrun with passengers as Garages 3, 4 and 5 were full or at least advertised as full.

https://s3-us-west-1.amazonaws.com/s...IMG_6200_4.jpg

https://s3-us-west-1.amazonaws.com/s...IMG_6201_5.jpg

Today we are flying Delta departing from Gate 141 in the Bradley Terminal. Still pretty dead here.

https://s3-us-west-1.amazonaws.com/s...IMG_6202_5.jpg

https://s3-us-west-1.amazonaws.com/s...IMG_6204_7.jpg

No one ahead of us in the PreCheck lanes.

https://s3-us-west-1.amazonaws.com/s...IMG_6207_3.jpg

One of the benefits of departing from TBIT is the Amex Centurion Lounge.

https://s3-us-west-1.amazonaws.com/s...IMG_6208_7.jpg

Unforunately, it was still closed but offering a grab and go food bag.

https://s3-us-west-1.amazonaws.com/s...IMG_4656_3.jpg

Then off to our gate in a dead TBIT.

And despite four other couple in First, apparently we were the only ones that knew this or at least took advantage of it.

Delta's lunch offering today... sparing no expense for First Class passengers.

https://s3-us-west-1.amazonaws.com/s...IMG_6243_1.jpg

All of the US3 have gone cheap and serve only plastic disposal cups. Apparently environmental wokeness takes a back seat to saving pennies. Older and occasionally wiser, I now travel with a DIY tumbler.

https://s3-us-west-1.amazonaws.com/s...IMG_6251_3.jpg

On the other hand, so glad we stopped at the Centurion Lounge for our Amex grab-and-go lunch.

https://s3-us-west-1.amazonaws.com/s...IMG_6241_4.jpg

https://s3-us-west-1.amazonaws.com/s...IMG_6247_3.jpg

Mrs. SFO777 enjoyed the crispy chicken wrap, while I tried the sweet potato wrap. It was actually OK.

https://s3-us-west-1.amazonaws.com/s...IMG_6248_2.jpg

We both agreed that the Amex grab-and-go cookies were fablous.

https://s3-us-west-1.amazonaws.com/s...IMG_6249_0.jpg

More pretty scenery on the way to Denver.

https://s3-us-west-1.amazonaws.com/s...IMG_6252_1.jpg

https://s3-us-west-1.amazonaws.com/s...IMG_6253_2.jpg

And back on the ground, arriving 20 minutes early in the A concourse.

And lovely DIA construction.

https://s3-us-west-1.amazonaws.com/s...IMG_6261_2.jpg

Since it was downright frigid (by SoCal standards), I offered to take the bus to our rental car and come back to pick up the Princess.

https://s3-us-west-1.amazonaws.com/s...IMG_6264_5.jpg

Not bad for $28 a day with my Presidents Club upgrade.

JW Marroitt Denver Cherry Creek

Late Saturday and fortunately not much traffic on I-70 to the Colorado Blvd. exit.

https://s3-us-west-1.amazonaws.com/s...IMG_6267_5.jpg

We (or rather Mrs. SFO777) decided that we should stay at the JW Cherry Creek instead of my Cherry Creek favorite, the Jacquard. Once a really nice hotel, The JW is now just an OK hotel in a good location. But at least we were able to use our Bonvoy free night certificates so our only cost was the $49 a day valet parking fee.

https://s3-us-west-1.amazonaws.com/s...IMG_6273_3.jpg

https://s3-us-west-1.amazonaws.com/s...IMG_6272_1.jpg

Our 5th floor room was nice enough but that's where it ended, with the JW and Marriott taking full advantage of Covid B.S. excuses to provide no amenities or service. And housekeeping was on request only with a minimum 24 hour notice. No glasses, no robes, no slippers, no coffee cups, no water pitcher for the water station down the hall. And no sign of our pre-requested humdifier. Oh yeah, and no Do Not Disturb sign... I guess because housekeeping is on demand only. Sheesh. It only took 30 minutes for housekeeping to deliver all of the above while I walked around the corner to Whole Foods to save $100 on bottled water for the weekend.

https://s3-us-west-1.amazonaws.com/s...IMG_6268_3.jpg

https://s3-us-west-1.amazonaws.com/s...IMG_6269_3.jpg

https://s3-us-west-1.amazonaws.com/s...IMG_6270_7.jpg

The only redeeming feature about the JW is Richard Sandoval's Toro Latin Kitchen. His Denver-based chain has 50+ restaurants around the world including the fabulous Toro Toro at the Grosvenor House in Dubai.

https://s3-us-west-1.amazonaws.com/s...IMG_6535_1.jpg

https://s3-us-west-1.amazonaws.com/s...IMG_6530_1.jpg

https://s3-us-west-1.amazonaws.com/s...IMG_6534_3.jpg

We met SFO777Jr and Mrs. SFO777Jr in the lobby for our 7:15pm reservation.

https://s3-us-west-1.amazonaws.com/s...IMG_6274_3.jpg

https://s3-us-west-1.amazonaws.com/s...IMG_6275_2.jpg

https://s3-us-west-1.amazonaws.com/s...IMG_6276_3.jpg

The Sweet Corn Empanada was wonderful.

https://s3-us-west-1.amazonaws.com/s...IMG_6279_0.jpg

Blackened Tuna Tacos. Yummy.

https://s3-us-west-1.amazonaws.com/s...IMG_6281_2.jpg

Octopus Anticucho. Really good.

https://s3-us-west-1.amazonaws.com/s...IMG_6283_0.jpg

The Salmon was spectacular, with achiote marinade, dashi braised bok choy, bacon morita bacon jam and achiote ponzu.

https://s3-us-west-1.amazonaws.com/s...IMG_6287_3.jpg

The Lomo Saltado, beef filet with creamy jasmine rice and sweet and sour heirloom tomatoes, was outstanding.

https://s3-us-west-1.amazonaws.com/s...IMG_6291_0.jpg

And some great sides.

https://s3-us-west-1.amazonaws.com/s...IMG_6288_4.jpg

https://s3-us-west-1.amazonaws.com/s...IMG_6290_5.jpg

For dessert, OMG... La Bomba was to die for. A chocolate sphere with cookie crumbles, seasonal berries, assorted sorbets and ice creams. And what a show. Our server smashed La Bomba onto a plastic sheet, and we had at it.

https://s3-us-west-1.amazonaws.com/s...IMG_6292_0.jpg

Yeah, we did a number on it.

https://s3-us-west-1.amazonaws.com/s...IMG_6297_4.jpg

When we sat down at our table, we had been told that we had 90 minutes time limit. LOL. Well, nearly four hours later we were still there, apparently having ordered enough food and wine to justiify our squatting.

https://s3-us-west-1.amazonaws.com/s...IMG_6298_1.jpg

Back to our room, not surprisingly the same trash from five hours earlier was still by the elevators. It was also there the next morning. The carpets in the hall were filthy and looked like they hadn't been vacuumed in a week. When I mentioned it to the front desk manager, he apologized and said he would have housekeeping vaccum the hall. Nothing came of that and the carpet had still not been vacuumed by the time we left two days later.

This is the NEW OC. When swat team and pistol whipping is the norm now I guess. When stuff like this happens in Irvine you know its time to get out.

Great report as always, SFO777. I flew Delta this past weekend from MSP to MCO in F, and found the service to be very good, and at least a full drink service. I did miss enjoying a meal on a flight of this length in pre-pandemic times, but instead had a box of snacks which I didn't touch that many of. Looking forward to when there are definitely more food options brought back.

Good luck in your home search in Colorado. My wife and I are beginning to look for a new home ourselves and what a market it is ...

Looking forward to your next report. All best,

Matthew

Nice report! Thanks for sharing.

Do I see it correctly that booze at DL Lounge in DEN is self-pour? I though only ex-NW World Clubs are (were?) self-pour...

Great as always SFO777. It is absolutely disgraceful what hotels are justifying these days due to "Covid." I put it in quotes because we all know at this point these changes are not going away. Say goodbye to daily housekeeping, typical food service, etc. besides at the very top hotels.

I had a very good stay at the JW Cherry Creek a few years ago, sad to see it's kind of crap now.

lamphs May 1, 2021 8:54 am

I noticed the Clif Bar that Delta served. I thought that Clif is relatively pricey and it made for a nice meal. Then I noticed it was the 'mini' version!

Yep. And we closed on our sale yesterday so we are officially (almost) outta here. :)

Thank you TPJ. Yes, booze was on the counter for all of us to have at it and self-pour.

Thanks so much UAL250. How true with some hotels. Covid, covid, covid is a convenient excuse to cut expenses and service. I would never go back to that JW.

Interesting trip report on rental options.

Super impressed that a rental has subzero and wolf - we are gut rehabbing a place and you would be shocked at the backlog for subzero and wolf.

Ironically, we are in Breckenridge (trying to suck all the value out of my veteran epic ski pass) - we are thinking of stopping by Cherry Creek later today for a late lunch before our flight.

Congrats on the quick home sale - prices are going crazy in the places where people want to live (e.g., Colorado, Florida, Texas etc.) and good luck with the move and home search!

cmd320 May 2, 2021 1:31 pm

Nice report!

It's certainly a seller's market right now in a lot of places where people are fleeing to. Taking a year to rent and finding the best option isn't the worst thing, and maybe if you're lucky the market may soften a little bit in that time.

You can add North Carolina to that list too. Everything is selling above asking with multiple offers, it's wild.

Let us know when you are back in Denver. If you settle in Cherry Creek, I will wave each time I walk my client's dog down in the shopping area.

I have a friend that bought in the Margaritaville development in Kissimmee 2 years ago at $950k - he's getting unsolicited cash offers north of $1.5 right now. insane

Welcome to Denver SFO777,
I know the Market is crazy...even my partner is a relator here...we rent out in Ken Caryl. Hope to meet or see you some time Dia or around the city.

OMG!!! Thank heavens you have seen the light and decided to return to a normal state. Come stay at my place. My wine fridge is full to the bream, we have an amazing cheese importer in my town and I have finally found a place that sells duck liver pate that doesn't taste like it was strained through a jock strap. Call me - let's have lunch!

Thank you ordogg. The SubZero/Wolf appliances were at Parq on Speer, super impressive building but too close to a downtown which has sadly deteriorated and is now overrun with an out of control homeless population.

Thank you HawaiiTrvlr. In the end, we did rent in Cherry Creek North and will be there in less than a month.

LOL. I know, I know. California is so screwed up and we're happy to be leaving. Gonna take you up on that offer once we've settled in. Thanks eightblack.

Back to Southern California...

After yesterday's mere 3" snowfall, this morning was brilliantly sunny with warming temps that quickly melted the snow.

https://s3-us-west-1.amazonaws.com/s...IMG_6524_2.jpg

https://s3-us-west-1.amazonaws.com/s...IMG_6525_2.jpg

One more JW service failure. This water was here 12 hours ago.

https://s3-us-west-1.amazonaws.com/s...IMG_6526_2.jpg

On our way to DIA...

https://s3-us-west-1.amazonaws.com/s...IMG_6537_3.jpg

We pulled into the Avis lot and asked for Curbside Delivery. For $35, an Avis rep will hop in your vehicle and drive you directly to the terminal. PreCheck moved quickly and we were thru and on the train 5 minutes later.

https://s3-us-west-1.amazonaws.com/s...IMG_6540_2.jpg

https://s3-us-west-1.amazonaws.com/s...IMG_6541_1.jpg

https://s3-us-west-1.amazonaws.com/s...IMG_6543_4.jpg

https://s3-us-west-1.amazonaws.com/s...IMG_6545_1.jpg

Since we had an hour before departure, we decided to eat in the terminal rather than having to suffer thru United's horrific wraps or infamous snackbox. Elway's had a 20 minute wait, so we headed to Wolfgang Puck.

https://s3-us-west-1.amazonaws.com/s...IMG_6542_2.jpg

OK, now Wolfgang's pepperoni pizza was really good.

https://s3-us-west-1.amazonaws.com/s...IMG_6547_1.jpg

At around T-40, we headed to our nearby Gate B42.

United gourmet options today. LOL.

https://s3-us-west-1.amazonaws.com/s...IMG_6564_3.jpg

Mrs. SFO777 wisely passed while I took the carb-box mostly for the photo op.

https://s3-us-west-1.amazonaws.com/s...IMG_6568_3.jpg

https://s3-us-west-1.amazonaws.com/s...IMG_6570_4.jpg

Back at LAX, we trekked over to the T-6 garage and our car for the hour drive south to South Orange County.

https://s3-us-west-1.amazonaws.com/s...IMG_6572_3.jpg

Thanks for following along so far. We rented one of the Cherry Creek apartments we saw and we'll be back in Denver officially in a month.

Jaimito Cartero May 5, 2021 11:02 pm

Some of those apartments were quite lovely. I hate to think what the rents are. Hope the move goes well!

Bretteee May 13, 2021 4:09 pm

LOL my nephew just moved from Denver to Tampa. He says he prefers the weather! Denver is booming with companies like Lockheed expanding.
Houses also sell fast there.

Looking forward to the sites through the states. Also, hope the events in Israel don’t derail that trip. This COVID crap is enough for a lifetime.

Thanks so much glasman19. Scenery on the drive thru Arizona, Utah and Colorado was amazing, breathtaking at times. Pics coming below. Still optimistic about the November Israel trip,

LOL. I actually have no idea. Although I'm pretty careful when I'm at home... offsetting the over-indulging on the road.

SFO777 Jun 12, 2021 7:28 am

On the road to Denver...

Two days of packing, one day of loading and we are temporarily homeless. Tonight we're staying at the Residence Inn Dana Point/San Juan Capitrano, the first night of what turned out to be seven consecutive nights at Marriott properties in three states, getting me closer to Marriott Platinum status. Convenient location for us...

https://s3-us-west-1.amazonaws.com/s...IMG_6671_5.jpg

... but this place has definitely seen better days.

https://s3-us-west-1.amazonaws.com/s...IMG_6672_6.jpg

https://s3-us-west-1.amazonaws.com/s...IMG_6674_6.jpg

Our suite with a lovely view... of a wall.

https://s3-us-west-1.amazonaws.com/s...IMG_6684_2.jpg

"Breakfast" the next morning.

https://s3-us-west-1.amazonaws.com/s...IMG_6677_3.jpg

https://s3-us-west-1.amazonaws.com/s...IMG_6678_1.jpg

https://s3-us-west-1.amazonaws.com/s...IMG_6679_1.jpg

https://s3-us-west-1.amazonaws.com/s...IMG_6683_1.jpg

While Mrs. SFO777 showered, I headed over to nearby Costco twice, to fuel up both of our vehicles...

https://s3-us-west-1.amazonaws.com/s...IMG_6662_4.jpg

And a car wash...

https://s3-us-west-1.amazonaws.com/s...IMG_6668_3.jpg

https://s3-us-west-1.amazonaws.com/s...IMG_6664_2.jpg

After a day of final organization and making sure the cleaners did their job, we headed out in tandem for the long, slow drive in rush hour traffic.

https://s3-us-west-1.amazonaws.com/s...IMG_6686_1.jpg

The first two hours were simply brutal with mostly bumper to bumper traffic.

https://s3-us-west-1.amazonaws.com/s...IMG_6689_0.jpg

https://s3-us-west-1.amazonaws.com/s...IMG_6690_2.jpg

https://s3-us-west-1.amazonaws.com/s...IMG_6692_1.jpg

We finally made good time and progress and then stopped in Barstow for a bit to eat.

https://s3-us-west-1.amazonaws.com/s...IMG_6697_5.jpg

https://s3-us-west-1.amazonaws.com/s...IMG_6693_3.jpg

https://s3-us-west-1.amazonaws.com/s...IMG_6695_2.jpg

And back on I-15 again.

https://s3-us-west-1.amazonaws.com/s...IMG_6698_1.jpg

Tedious drive with a few interesting signs and "landmarks" along the way.

https://s3-us-west-1.amazonaws.com/s...IMG_6700_2.jpg

The culprit for yet another traffiic back-up.

https://s3-us-west-1.amazonaws.com/s...IMG_6736_3.jpg

Gorgeous sunset as we approach the Nevada border.

https://s3-us-west-1.amazonaws.com/s...IMG_6745_0.jpg

https://s3-us-west-1.amazonaws.com/s...IMG_6757_5.jpg

https://s3-us-west-1.amazonaws.com/s...IMG_6758_4.jpg

And finally to Henderson and one of the nicest Residence Inns of the trip. And only $125 a night, breakfast included.

https://s3-us-west-1.amazonaws.com/s...IMG_6773_4.jpg

Same layout, but much, much nicer than last night.

First stop this morning was to fuel up both cars. How can I pass up a name like this and gas prices $1 a gallon less than the PRC.

https://s3-us-west-1.amazonaws.com/s...IMG_6788_5.jpg

Back on I-15 thru downtown Las Vegas...

https://s3-us-west-1.amazonaws.com/s...IMG_6807_3.jpg

https://s3-us-west-1.amazonaws.com/s...IMG_6811_2.jpg

I'm glad that moving (always painful) hasn't discouraged you from writing trip reports. All your wonderful pictures remind me of how little I know about geology and gastronomy, for that matter.

Many, many years ago, if it's any comfort, I spent more time than I care to remember on long-distance trains (among others, the Nord Express, the Sud Express and three times on the Orient Express back when it still ran), and they're really not so great. They can gussy it up all they want these days with better food and pretty decoration, but it's still a night train and still miserable. Pace the "Man in Seat 61," but that's why people fly. And, yeah, I actually did make it from London to Istanbul.
