Cabo San Lucas and The Resort at Pedregal via Alaska (VX) First
Mrs. SFO777 and I are off today for a quick two day trip to Cabo San Lucas. Summer is certainly not the most pleasant time of the year to visit Cabo, but it's one of our good friend's 60th birthday and we're on our way to join the party and celebration. Fortunately, Alaska has a five days a week Orange County to Cabo nonstop. Even better since they are operating a Virgin America configured A319.
Orange County SNA to San Jose del Cabo SJD Alaska AS 1224 A319 9:50am-1:15pm July 31, 2019 First Class Seats 2AC https://s3-us-west-1.amazonaws.com/s...IMG_7009_0.jpg https://s3-us-west-1.amazonaws.com/s...IMG_7010_0.jpg This plane had the first generation VX seats, but still very comfortable especially on a short two hour flight. https://s3-us-west-1.amazonaws.com/s...IMG_7292_4.jpg https://s3-us-west-1.amazonaws.com/s...IMG_7016_1.jpg https://s3-us-west-1.amazonaws.com/s...IMG_7017_2.jpg https://s3-us-west-1.amazonaws.com/s...IMG_7018_0.jpg Excellent service today including pre-departure open bar service. And after take-off, a breakfast smoothie and my first of two Bloody Marys. https://s3-us-west-1.amazonaws.com/s...IMG_7020_3.jpg Breakfast today was a choice of yogurt and granola, or breakfast sandwich. There was only one breakfast sandwich left by the time our flight attendant got to our seats, so we were stuck with one of each. Unfortunately, the yogurt was disgusting and inedible. https://s3-us-west-1.amazonaws.com/s...IMG_7021_2.jpg The breakfast sandwich looked much better... https://s3-us-west-1.amazonaws.com/s...IMG_7024_1.jpg ... and was very tasty. My half as we split it. https://s3-us-west-1.amazonaws.com/s...IMG_7026_3.jpg The BOB Economy Cheese Platter from Economy was still available... for $8.50... https://s3-us-west-1.amazonaws.com/s...IMG_7027_2.jpg ... and unlike the yogurt was edible and refreshing. https://s3-us-west-1.amazonaws.com/s...IMG_7028_4.jpg https://s3-us-west-1.amazonaws.com/s...IMG_7030_2.jpg I guess this sounded cool 10 years ago. https://s3-us-west-1.amazonaws.com/s...IMG_7031_3.jpg https://s3-us-west-1.amazonaws.com/s...IMG_7032_4.jpg https://s3-us-west-1.amazonaws.com/s...IMG_7036_3.jpg https://s3-us-west-1.amazonaws.com/s...IMG_7038_5.jpg And then there was endless parade of Economy pax to the First Class lav. IME, Virgin America crews were pretty good about restricting lav access. Alaska? Not so much. Indeed the VX cabin divider rope was still there, hanging useless as Alaska continues to not care about who uses the F lav. https://s3-us-west-1.amazonaws.com/s...IMG_7039_2.jpg On descent to SJD. https://s3-us-west-1.amazonaws.com/s...IMG_7041_3.jpg https://s3-us-west-1.amazonaws.com/s...IMG_7044_2.jpg https://s3-us-west-1.amazonaws.com/s...IMG_7046_2.jpg https://s3-us-west-1.amazonaws.com/s...IMG_7048_2.jpg We pulled into the gate ontime at 1:15pm MST. https://s3-us-west-1.amazonaws.com/s...IMG_7049_0.jpg The deceiving deserted walk to customs. https://s3-us-west-1.amazonaws.com/s...IMG_7050_2.jpg Looking good. https://s3-us-west-1.amazonaws.com/s...IMG_7051_0.jpg But whoa Nellie. At the bottom of the escalator, the customs arrival hall... with 1,000 or so of our closest friends from 4 or 5 flights that beat us to the terminal. Nary a single person in the Mexican, pregnant and handicapped passport line but a mass of humanity in the Foreign passport line. No idea what they were, but there were a bunch of kiosks on the other side of the rope against the left wall with no signage as to purpose. I asked a security person whether Global Entry members could use them and was told no. OK, not sure about that as all sorts of people started using them, eventually resulting in an even slower line on the left side of the hall. In the end, It took 50 minutes to get to one of 6 manned booths out of 20 or so. https://s3-us-west-1.amazonaws.com/s...IMG_7054_0.jpg https://s3-us-west-1.amazonaws.com/s...IMG_7055_3.jpg As if 50 minutes for customs wasn't bad enough, we then had to queue for random incoming bag check. Not surprisingly, we got a red light and wasted another few minutes before exiting customs and entering time share central. https://s3-us-west-1.amazonaws.com/s...IMG_7057_2.jpg Outside, to tent position #4 and our pre-arranged ride. https://s3-us-west-1.amazonaws.com/s...IMG_7058_0.jpg |
That resort looks stunning - ditto the food! Craving some good ceviche and octopus right now just looking at the pictures.
I can easily see myself spending a few days there just drinking a corona and admiring the views from the plunge pool. Thanks for posting, as always! |
Another SFO777 trip review so soon after the last? Now you're spoiling us.

We go to Cabo at least once a year. It’s our favorite place and we are going in October. Each time we go, our last dinner is at El Farallon at Pedregal. It’s simply breathtaking and this time is no different; we have reservations on Oct 9th. We are also trying the restaurant at Esparanza this time as well. The airport machine where you tap the button is unique and decidedly kind of funny. The first two times we went, I got the red light and had bags checked. Since then, my wife hits the button and has been green every time. Of course, we have nothing to hide, but it has become a fun little game we play now. Hope you enjoyed. |
Had to laugh at the immigration line, we had the exact same experience when we visited this February. That line puts Disney to shame.
|
The kiosks may be for the Viajero Confiable program. Apparently if you have GE, a US citizen may obtain an equivalent for Mexico. Just 3 airports though - CUN, SJD, and MEX. Looks like a nice resort.

Great to see this new report from you, SFO777! Looks like you had a fun trip ... the dinner at your resort hotel made me super hungry! Also did the guacamole and corona pictures! :) I am amazed sometimes when airlines don't enforce the F class lav policy more. In my opinion I think it's fine if people use it if they are in the very front of the cabin (like the bulkhead of Y), but to have an endless stream seems to be a bit much especially when there are always comments of "remaining in your ticketed cabin."
As always, thank you for sharing your travels with us! Best - Matthew |
Gasp... the immigration lines. To think it was a Wednesday and it would probably be worse towards the weekend.

An amazing resort in a stunning location on the tip of Baja California Peninsula, SFO777:). The mountain tunnel makes for a very grand entrance too!
|
Wow at the resort! :o
|
I took my first trip down there with Alaska First mainline (737) earlier this year. It was pretty disorganized as you accurately describe, but otherwise an interesting destination. I'm not sure if it actually compares with Hawaii but it made for a nice change of pace than our usual island holiday.
|
I was in Cabo in 1982. The problem is that most of the beaches are too rough to swim in. The only swimable safe beach is near the famous rocks. Unfortunately our hotel was not there.
|
Excellent report as usual, SFO777. Based on your photo and reviews, Cabo definitely looks like a great destination outside summer, and the resort must added a lot of extra memories to your trip. Getting there from Australia is a real problem though (I'm talking about flying at least 8,000 miles and two transits to get there)
Stay tuned for my upcoming Jakarta and Bali trip in September (spoiler: flying Y only, I'm poor on miles now :D) |

A relaxing day at The Resort at Pedregal
After a late night... a late morning. The beautiful view from our terrace. https://s3-us-west-1.amazonaws.com/s...IMG_7117_0.jpg Oh yeah, a filling breakfast goes a long way to help with the hangover. https://s3-us-west-1.amazonaws.com/sfo777/IMG_7120.jpg https://s3-us-west-1.amazonaws.com/sfo777/IMG_7122.jpg It was well after noon by the time we finally left our room. OMG, from 68 degrees to over 100 outside. Yikes. Despite the oppressive heat, I decided to explore. https://s3-us-west-1.amazonaws.com/s...IMG_7140_1.jpg Despite the 100+ degree temps, lots of crazies out in the sun. https://s3-us-west-1.amazonaws.com/s...IMG_7148_2.jpg https://s3-us-west-1.amazonaws.com/s...IMG_7149_4.jpg https://s3-us-west-1.amazonaws.com/s...IMG_7151_1.jpg https://s3-us-west-1.amazonaws.com/s...IMG_7152_3.jpg https://s3-us-west-1.amazonaws.com/s...IMG_7157_1.jpg The fitness center is the place to be today with much nicer 70 degree temps. https://s3-us-west-1.amazonaws.com/s...IMG_7159_3.jpg ... and a view. https://s3-us-west-1.amazonaws.com/s...IMG_7160_2.jpg Now after 2pm, we headed for a light lunch at Don Manuel's, near the beach. https://s3-us-west-1.amazonaws.com/s...IMG_7142_1.jpg Much more pleasant inside with cooling fans. https://s3-us-west-1.amazonaws.com/s...IMG_7146_0.jpg https://s3-us-west-1.amazonaws.com/s...IMG_7161_1.jpg https://s3-us-west-1.amazonaws.com/s...IMG_7162_2.jpg Food was excellent as we shared the Blue Fin Tuna... https://s3-us-west-1.amazonaws.com/s...IMG_7164_3.jpg ... and shrimp tacos. Fabulous. https://s3-us-west-1.amazonaws.com/s...IMG_7165_3.jpg Then back up to the room to cool down. A little after 4pm, snack time! With some creature moving in from the left. LOL. https://s3-us-west-1.amazonaws.com/s...IMG_7170_2.jpg https://s3-us-west-1.amazonaws.com/s...IMG_7167_2.jpg By 7pm, the temps had cooled into the upper 80s, and the walk to dinner was more pleasant. https://s3-us-west-1.amazonaws.com/s...IMG_7171_1.jpg Tonight we're dining at el Farallon, the resort's signature cliff side restaurant. https://s3-us-west-1.amazonaws.com/s...IMG_7172_1.jpg https://s3-us-west-1.amazonaws.com/s...IMG_7173_2.jpg https://s3-us-west-1.amazonaws.com/s...IMG_7177_1.jpg https://s3-us-west-1.amazonaws.com/s...IMG_7180_3.jpg https://s3-us-west-1.amazonaws.com/s...IMG_7185_2.jpg A drink to start as the sun sets... https://s3-us-west-1.amazonaws.com/s...IMG_7187_1.jpg el Farallon serves a 4 course quasi prix fixe menu featuring ocean-to-table selections. The starters are standard, you just have to pick your main and two sides from a variety of choices... all explained here prior to being seated. https://s3-us-west-1.amazonaws.com/s...IMG_7207_1.jpg https://s3-us-west-1.amazonaws.com/s...IMG_7188_1.jpg https://s3-us-west-1.amazonaws.com/s...IMG_7189_1.jpg Yummy bread basket. https://s3-us-west-1.amazonaws.com/s...IMG_7190_0.jpg Up first, excellent clam chowder. https://s3-us-west-1.amazonaws.com/s...IMG_7191_2.jpg https://s3-us-west-1.amazonaws.com/s...IMG_7192_1.jpg https://s3-us-west-1.amazonaws.com/s...IMG_7193_1.jpg Then a trio of delicious starters. https://s3-us-west-1.amazonaws.com/s...IMG_7195_3.jpg The octopus was sensational. https://s3-us-west-1.amazonaws.com/s...IMG_7197_3.jpg The ceviche divine. https://s3-us-west-1.amazonaws.com/s...IMG_7198_5.jpg https://s3-us-west-1.amazonaws.com/s...IMG_7199_2.jpg And a lovely beet salad. https://s3-us-west-1.amazonaws.com/s...IMG_7200_2.jpg https://s3-us-west-1.amazonaws.com/s...IMG_7201_2.jpg Our mains. Mrs. SFO777 enjoyed the Mexican red snapper and her sides of Mexican rice and zucchini. https://s3-us-west-1.amazonaws.com/s...IMG_7202_2.jpg And my Cajun shrimp with sides of roasted tomato with pesto and capellini with home made chorizo. Fabulous. https://s3-us-west-1.amazonaws.com/s...IMG_7203_2.jpg And desserts to die for. https://s3-us-west-1.amazonaws.com/s...IMG_7205_0.jpg https://s3-us-west-1.amazonaws.com/s...IMG_7206_2.jpg Heading back to our room after a wonderful meal. https://s3-us-west-1.amazonaws.com/s...IMG_7208_3.jpg https://s3-us-west-1.amazonaws.com/s...IMG_7209_2.jpg Poolside entertainment, nice with a drink at the bar. Not so nice in our room. Mercifully, they packed it in at 10pm. https://s3-us-west-1.amazonaws.com/s...IMG_7210_3.jpg The view from our room, with el Farallon off in the distance cliffside. https://s3-us-west-1.amazonaws.com/s...IMG_7213_2.jpg |
Wow! The place looks just as fantastic at night as it does during the day!
|
Not 100% sure about Cabo, but when I was in Mexico City couple months ago, the Kiosks are just an automated passport and customs/immigration machine which can be used by US citizens. I used it to clear immigration. It's equivalent to the automated kiosks used at US Airports for the Non GE people.
|
Sadly Alaska is cutting SNA to SJD (and PVR). I think the last flights are this month. Only option SNA to SJD will be Southwest. And that leaves the unfortunate decision of what's worse: LAX or Southwest …
Not sure what day you arrived, but never arrive Cabo on a Saturday. Most of the timeshares are Saturday to Saturday so you get an excessively high number of arrivals and departures that day. I've twice arrived on a Saturday and finally learned my lesson the second time. I will never make that mistake again. |
Whats wrong with southwest? When i have to fly economy they are my go to instead of the other 3 and they are super nice to my 4.5 yr old. stupid question......can you swim in the water? I heard you cant |

Heading home to The OC
With an 11:30am pickup, we enjoyed a leisurely morning before heading down to San Miguel's for breakfast. Nice breakfast buffet station where you order your main which is then delivered to your table. https://s3-us-west-1.amazonaws.com/s...IMG_7218_1.jpg https://s3-us-west-1.amazonaws.com/s...IMG_7219_4.jpg https://s3-us-west-1.amazonaws.com/s...IMG_7220_0.jpg https://s3-us-west-1.amazonaws.com/s...IMG_7221_3.jpg https://s3-us-west-1.amazonaws.com/s...IMG_7222_2.jpg https://s3-us-west-1.amazonaws.com/sfo777/IMG_7223.jpg We brought some fruit and pastry back to the table while we waited for our mains. https://s3-us-west-1.amazonaws.com/s...IMG_7224_1.jpg https://s3-us-west-1.amazonaws.com/s...IMG_7225_1.jpg Mrs. SFO777's loaded omelet... https://s3-us-west-1.amazonaws.com/s...IMG_7226_3.jpg ... and my huevos rancheros. Both excellent. https://s3-us-west-1.amazonaws.com/s...IMG_7227_1.jpg Our pre-arranged Eliker driver was on time and we headed off for today's 30 minute drive to the airport. https://s3-us-west-1.amazonaws.com/s...IMG_7125_1.jpg https://s3-us-west-1.amazonaws.com/s...IMG_7228_2.jpg Adios until next time... in the winter, not in the summer. https://s3-us-west-1.amazonaws.com/s...IMG_7229_2.jpg Terminal 2 at SJD. https://s3-us-west-1.amazonaws.com/s...IMG_7237_4.jpg https://s3-us-west-1.amazonaws.com/s...IMG_7238_2.jpg We had checked online and printed boarding passes at the hotel, but checked in at the counter for a document check. https://s3-us-west-1.amazonaws.com/s...IMG_7239_1.jpg https://s3-us-west-1.amazonaws.com/s...IMG_7241_2.jpg And then upstairs to security. https://s3-us-west-1.amazonaws.com/s...IMG_7242_1.jpg ... where they was virtually no one in line. https://s3-us-west-1.amazonaws.com/s...IMG_7244_1.jpg With six open scanning stations, we were thru in no time, and into the typical duty free shop on the way to the concourse. https://s3-us-west-1.amazonaws.com/s...IMG_7245_2.jpg I guess it works as there were at least 40 people waiting in line for the cashier. In the air, time to dry out. https://s3-us-west-1.amazonaws.com/s...IMG_7297_1.jpg Lunch choices were a protein plate or chicken and cheese sandwich. https://s3-us-west-1.amazonaws.com/s...IMG_7298_2.jpg The chicken sandwich was actually very tasty and included real, non-processed chicken. https://s3-us-west-1.amazonaws.com/s...IMG_7299_3.jpg For desert, we finished off our parting gift from The Resort at Pedregal, delicious turtle-shaped shortbread cookies. https://s3-us-west-1.amazonaws.com/s...IMG_7300_0.jpg We arrived home at SNA 25 minutes early. John Wayne/SNA has a very small CBP facility with only three agents today. Since we were one of the first to arrive, we bypassed the 3 Global Entry kiosks and just headed directly to an agent. What an enjoyable quick two day trip to Cabo. We'll definitely return but never again in the oppressively hot summer. Thanks for following along on this short report. For more pics and an HD version of this report, please visit SFO777.com... • Off to Cabo • The Resort at Pedregal • Relaxing day at Pedregal • Heading home to The OC • Alaska First Class to John Wayne |
It looks quite controlled/organised the bus gates compared to some airports I have seen!
Love the cookies you took from the hotel! Thanks again for another TR from you. :) |
Great TR and what a mess at immigration. I’ve had similar at LHR and probably others. I really hate it. It’s another good excuse to avoid flying in general :-) |
This is the summer of SFO777. Thank you again for sharing ^^

The Google transition of part of the Mexican page about the Viajero Confiable system is this... (I speak no spanish so it's entirely a google translation)
"If you are a Mexican, American or Canadian citizen (belonging to the Global Entry and NEXUS Programs) and reside permanently in Mexico, the National Migration Institute has launched an action that allows you to quickly and safely enter Mexico through Automated kiosks located in the participating airports in the internment rooms, where you can scan your passport, provide your fingerprints and fill out the Migration Form, which will reduce your waiting time considerably when you enter Mexico." |

Thanks for this SFO777. I'm actually gearing up for a half long weekend, half mileage run to Cabo next month. Nothing like JFK-MEX-SJD r/t to rack up the Delta MQMs on a cheap fare, topped off with an AM redeye MEX-JFK! :D Still don't know where I'm staying but I'm sure it won't be as lux as your weekend.

Not 100% sure about Cabo, but when I was in Mexico City couple months ago, the Kiosks are just an automated passport and customs/immigration machine which can be used by US citizens. I used it to clear immigration. It's equivalent to the automated kiosks used at US Airports for the Non GE people.

Those machines are a god send, MEX has long been a cluster f... I'm not sure the full list of countries that can use them, but Canadian citizens can as well. I used them earlier this year connecting in MEX.

The Resort at Pedregal looks absolutely gorgeous and a wonderful getaway; will add to my list. The immigration clusterF upon arrival, not so much.
Thanks for sharing SFO777 |

Awesome resort, and a great TR! Thank you!

Thanks for this brief report SFO777. I never did like aircraft configured without a proper bulkhead to block the forward galley - those purple translucent panels look quite tacky. AS’s catering looks very weak (notably small portion sizes), although legroom in those ex-VX seats is good.
The Resort looks like a fairly unique setting, although I agree the rooms are a little dated. That kind of heat wouldn't agree with me either, but glad you had a good time celebrating your friend's birthday. |
