Offerendum - a fantastic report so far. I am in awe of the amount of time that these reports take to prepare. |

Rome: Capitoline Hill
Next we went to the Capitoline Hill, the beautiful designed place by Michelangelo.

Really enjoyed your preview and pictures! Felt as if I'm visiting the Eternal city myself!
Was it necessary to blank out the faces of the people? Especially of the soldiers in the changing of the guards. Not criticising, just curious in your decision since it is a distraction in those beautiful pictures. Thanks for taking time to post this! I enjoyed it. |

Rome: Palazzo Doria-Pamphilj
Palazzo Doria-Pamphilj is one of the most important privat Palazzos in Rome. First we visited the staterooms and private appartements.

Gelato: Rome Il Gelato Di San Crispino
Before we went back to our hotel it was time for a gelato. I found a recommondation for San Crispino and gave it a try.
https://cimg3.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...66541eaa23.jpg The gelato was very good, the best so far. https://cimg8.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...3d8a7c89dd.jpg |
Dinner: La Pergola 3 star
When I decided to visit Rome I immediately booked a table at La Pergola. I also considered to stay at the Waldorf which is home of La Pergola but decided against it due to its location and some reviews at FT.
I read itīs hard to get a reservation at La Pergola and even Waldorf concierge would have problems. With some time in advance I booked via email without any problem. When I entered the lobby after a nearly 30 minutes cab drive I knew I did the right decision. Yes, they have art on display (the paintings at the bar are Tiepolos) but the place feels like you are back in the 60s and you are in a big and inpersonal hotel. https://cimg5.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...79d29d4a4c.jpg https://cimg4.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...f90fc49e69.jpg To reach the restaurant you must go up to the top-floor. https://cimg3.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...cae1286d65.jpg The restaurant is elegant with an opulent style. I didnīt take pictures but you can see it at the Internet. They offer a 7 course menu (225 ), 10 course menu (260 ) and a la carte options. They were happy to offer us an individual 7 course menu without meat which we took. For drinks I got - after denining alcoholic options - an extensive list of Mineral water which were priced in a realistic range (no 100 water like in some bling bling restaurants). In the end I went with a recommondation (Italian water of course). First some very good Amuse Bouche https://cimg3.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...d1b4ebbe52.jpg https://cimg5.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...6ba61bcf66.jpg https://cimg4.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...70ce461f82.jpg First course: Tuna, wild asparagus and almonds https://cimg7.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...6f8b7039f5.jpg A very good dish which made very curious for whatīs comming. Second course: Squid filled with pink shrimps on Infusion of toasted shellfish with turnip tops https://cimg2.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...552e475701.jpg Well, simply a world-class dish. Third Course: Heart of lettuce stewed at high pressure https://cimg1.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...112df4a359.jpg Normally it comes with chicken but for us it were without it. To be honest this was my least favourite dish. Still good but I liked the others more. Fourth cuorse: Wholemeal "maccheroncini al ferretto" with shellfish, smoked aubergine coulis and croutons https://cimg8.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...5b72b217d5.jpg Not a bif fan of wholemeal pasta and aubergine so I was sceptical. Nevertheless I loved it as it tasted so great. Fifth Course: Red mullet with spinach, Lemon and rasins https://cimg6.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...e47d8865d6.jpg Also a high level dish. Sixth course: Turbot with asparagus and codium https://cimg4.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...4f01b07adb.jpg Again a very good dish. Now the table changed for desserts https://cimg1.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...f4786b88e5.jpg Pre-dessert https://cimg5.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...6f787b1235.jpg First petit fours https://cimg8.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...51455bc513.jpg The dessert: Ricotta cream with Marzipan, soft pistacchio and sorbet of candied orange https://cimg1.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...0e9e90c44d.jpg Delicious! But more was waiting! The magic tower, filled with pralines: https://cimg2.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...ed50973a24.jpg This was really a great dinner and La Pergola deserves its 3 stars without doubt. For me itīs a must-eat when in Rome. At the end we went to the terrace to enjoy the view: https://cimg2.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...f054521781.jpg https://cimg1.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...ff4ab03b2e.jpg The Exit: https://cimg9.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...6368caed56.jpg |
Wow - La Pergola looks amazing! Being a meat eater, I can only imagine what the meat would taste like :D

Rome: Domus Aurea
One thing I wanted always see in Rome was Domus Aurea but due to renovations it wasnīt possible. Now itīs open at weekends and I was able to get a reservation (at the day it was fully booked but a few weeks in advance normally should be enough).
The entrance is located near the Colosseum in Parco del Colle Oppio. https://cimg6.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...72f1f681b3.jpg Nice tree: https://cimg2.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...525579b83c.jpg The sight is only accessable with a guided tour and you have to wear a helmet. We entered through a tunnel build by Trajan. https://cimg3.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...48df36aa0e.jpg During the tour we saw several rooms with paintings and we did a virtual tour with a 3d spectacles. https://cimg3.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...1646d0772e.jpg https://cimg4.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...3237fdc95a.jpg https://cimg4.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...38d08d3843.jpg https://cimg8.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...9acd14e3ca.jpg https://cimg5.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...f89ac34987.jpg https://cimg7.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...bb3f926f74.jpg https://cimg6.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...acd79868af.jpg https://cimg3.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...8a9c45f278.jpg https://cimg5.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...c843907f73.jpg https://cimg7.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...dc4eb06cd9.jpg https://cimg6.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...c4878fda5b.jpg https://cimg4.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...9e993a4687.jpg https://cimg9.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...63378fab3f.jpg https://cimg1.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...9421ca2890.jpg https://cimg0.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...5b29b1aaeb.jpg https://cimg3.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...7cec8941c6.jpg https://cimg2.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...4cc78410cd.jpg The famous cupola room https://cimg4.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...96aeb04fae.jpg https://cimg3.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...9a6853f08d.jpg https://cimg5.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...82e2317b17.jpg https://cimg2.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...ec4808ffe1.jpg I really enjoyed it! One last advice: I read itīs cold inside. As I didnīt want to walk through Rome all the day with a coat I left it in the hotel. Not the best idea as it was "fresh" inside. |
Rome: Basilica di San Pietro n Vincoli
Next we went to San Pietro in Vincoli.
https://cimg9.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...1fb46233c7.jpg https://cimg8.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...d52dc8629b.jpg Frescos by Giacomo Coppi https://cimg0.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...e2ed23beac.jpg Chains of St Peter (at least they claim;)) https://cimg8.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...f5bf173685.jpg Michelangelo's tomb for Julius II with the famous Moses https://cimg6.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...2c63d6ad92.jpg https://cimg7.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...02949edefe.jpg |
Gelato: Il Cannolo Siciliano Rome (number 24 Dissapore)
I was very excited to try my first gelato from the Dissapore list. To be honest I didnīt have planed a visit this day so I wasnīt prepared. When we were on our way to Palazzo Colonna we saw a gelateria with many trophies in the window. Later I realized it was number 24 on the Dissapore list and of Course on my "must eat gelato list).
https://cimg5.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...354bc41c70.jpg https://cimg4.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...ae3cc58436.jpg The gelato was delicious. Personally I didnīt found it better than San Crispino but I guess this is personal taste. |
Rome: Palazzo Colonna
Beside Palazzo Doria-Pamphilj Palazzo Colonna is the other outstanding Palazzo in Rome. We entered and stood in the Galleria Colonna, a stunning gallerie with fine art.
https://cimg0.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...ec38a31b41.jpg https://cimg2.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...d910e1b21f.jpg https://cimg3.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...36f29a6dfa.jpg https://cimg4.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...8a4bf297b4.jpg https://cimg5.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...c149d9d5fb.jpg Commodes https://cimg3.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...53f642cbc0.jpg https://cimg4.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...5044acaf48.jpg The art collection contains many important artworks. https://cimg3.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...bdb0f972dc.jpg https://cimg9.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...262b3b08ff.jpg https://cimg0.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...3127042750.jpg https://cimg2.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...a4d5599399.jpg https://cimg1.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...22cd924bc8.jpg For an (heavy 15 ) extra charge we visited the Appartamento Principessa Isabelle with a guided tour. The rooms were used by Isabelle until her death in 1984. This clock is quite interesting as it shows Marie Mancini and 2 of her sisters on their way to hell. Marie Mancini was the wife of Lorenzo Onofrio Colonna and in 1672 she left him and escaped with the help of her Sisters. Later she wrote her memoirs which werenīt too positive regarding her husband. Of course it was quite a scandal and it seems the Colonna Family came never over it. https://cimg6.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...46c407e534.jpg Her livingroom https://cimg1.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...4f11cfe90a.jpg Sala del Dughet https://cimg5.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...6439516164.jpg Dining room https://cimg6.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...f25248a99e.jpg https://cimg5.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...24a2fdd087.jpg Sala del Mascherone https://cimg3.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...6d84014469.jpg |
Rome: Castel SantAngelo
Castel SantAngelo is aone of the popular attractions in Rome. Personally I like especially the views.
https://cimg6.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...2381cb6532.jpg View on Ponte Sant'Angelo https://cimg2.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...5e2e640802.jpg Courtyard https://cimg6.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...f248213689.jpg Many of the rooms are richly decorated. https://cimg8.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...443c6f8b62.jpg https://cimg7.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...f525126d7f.jpg https://cimg7.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...50943ad9ad.jpg https://cimg4.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...1e5e0a1a03.jpg https://cimg2.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...7a664280e0.jpg https://cimg6.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...a256769587.jpg https://cimg5.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...85f454d592.jpg https://cimg3.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...40d4fb02b0.jpg But as I said my favourite place is the roof with its views: https://cimg3.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...2d0e0abbb5.jpg https://cimg7.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...888d2c2c15.jpg https://cimg4.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...f19433fd23.jpg https://cimg6.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...763e8ae5e5.jpg https://cimg5.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...d069d75b29.jpg |
Rome: Pizzarium
Of Course in Rome you wonna eat pizza. One of the most hyped places is Pizzarium. As it isnīt really central we took a taxi to reach it. At the place there was a huge crowd and we had to take a number. I was number 77. After a few minutes I mentioned they served number 21. Around half a hour later they served numer 29. count and you know at least one hour (optimistic; realistic more 2 hours) later we had a chance to get a piece of pizza. We decided to leave as we thought there are better things to do in Rome than waiting for a pizza. But I took some pictures:
https://cimg3.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...d476e5aa7b.jpg https://cimg5.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...9c3b5a972d.jpg |
Gelato: Gelati Gelati
No pizza, but we were able to grab a gelato. This time it was Gelati Gelati, a recommondation from a guidebook.
https://cimg2.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...e7ee553f5d.jpg https://cimg1.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...a7ee9c1fbf.jpg Gelato was good, would like to eat it again;) |

I'm loving this trip report, and since we're headed to Rome in 10 days, I took copious notes. I'm looking forward to the Florence portion, certainly one of my favorite cities.

As a friend of music I decided to book one evening a performance at the opera. I had only one choice, Serata Philip Glass. A ballet. It didnīt say anything to me but I booked it.
From outside the opera is not really spectacular. https://cimg1.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...5b0e6b72ec.jpg The upper lobby with costumes (Rigoletto) https://cimg3.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...b5ab579e86.jpg https://cimg2.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...9a0dda7aa8.jpg The audience is as expected opulent. https://cimg0.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...25528a430e.jpg https://cimg9.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...3e4b3c544a.jpg https://cimg8.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...8b9ecc92f1.jpg The perfomance was special. First I missed the orchestra. After the light was out the performance started with recorded music. I was not really amused. The Sound was not good. If I head read the program properly I had known it. The dancing was modern and pretty good. Fortunatelly after the first act I was happy to see the orchestra came in. From now on there was proper music and the dancing was on a high level. Costumes were mentionworth and didnīt left much space for Imagination (someone learned a new word: cameltoe). I still would have prefered to watch a classic opera or ballet but it was nevertheless a nice performance. https://cimg3.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...cc323c6a2a.jpg |
Rome: Santa Maria degli Angeli e dei Martiri
Santa Maria degli Angeli e dei Martiri is a quite interesting church as it is build in parts of the former Baths of Diocletian. First Michelangelo was responsible for the transformation to a church.
https://cimg1.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...becbb2bc76.jpg My inside pictures are a little limited as parts were closed due to a service. https://cimg9.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...182ccd5302.jpg https://cimg0.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...ab3d9581b2.jpg https://cimg1.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...388bb0f2ea.jpg |

We stumbled into San Crispino last time I was in Rome and definitely agree that we would go back there for our daily dose of Vitamin G.
Also, we saw Swan Lake at the Opera House. Our seats were a little higher up than yours, but it was still a nice experience. |

Rome: Santa Maria Maggiore
One of the 4 papal churches (Basilica maior) in Rome is Santa Maria Maggiore. Other Basilica maiors are San Pietro, San Giovanni in Laterano and San Paolo fuori le Mura. Beside this Roman churches only San Francesco and Basilika Santa Maria degli Angeli in Assisi are basilicas maior. Personally itīs my favourite church of the 4 basilicas maior. Gelato: Tre Scalini Rome
Tre Scalini is a relative well known restaurant at Piazza Navona. Itīs famous as tey claim to be the creators of Tartufo. I had dinner there in 2009, nothing special.
This time we didnīt visit the restaurant, we visited the take away. We took one Tartufo and one ice cream. https://cimg7.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...63b2a045e9.jpg https://cimg5.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...f57675ef2e.jpg The Tartufo was good pretty with a lot of chocolate. The ice cream (no gelato) was mediocre, nothing you must eat in Rome. |
Rome: Santa Maria sopra Minerva
I like this church especially because of the elephant;)
https://cimg0.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...84d126c8f5.jpg The church contains the grave of Catherine of Siena as well as the grave of 5 popes. https://cimg6.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...4bb6931669.jpg https://cimg7.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...65e724a19b.jpg Statue from Michelangelo (Risen Christ) https://cimg5.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...be16069e10.jpg |

Dinner: Imago Rome 1 star
As Imago is located near the Eden it was a logical choice. I canīt say way but I had relative low expectations. The restaurant is located at the Hassler, with the elvator we reached the top-floor. The interior was nice, but the view was stunning. We were able to enjoy the sunset, later the lights of the city.

Perhaps not the level of La Pergola but nevertheless great. I really recommend it. |
Such a great TR thus far. Looking forward to more restaurant pictures!
