Second, great TR as usual.
Third, why the flash of the EU passport at the beginning and the NZ as you're leaving? Do the various African authorities care that much between passports?

Having a non-UK passport may come in useful considering this: Map of the Day: Where the Brits never invaded - Humanosphere :)

Great TR, DanielW - yet again!

Amazing report and photos, Daniel as always! Thank you. I always look forward to each of your reports!

flying_blue_white_red Jan 7, 2018 3:41 pm

The Oscar to the best TRs goes to..., as usual, DanielW.
I'm surprised that even after our (thankgod) ousted stupid president N. Sarkozy who decided to bomb Libya (and whose presidential rallies was funded by the ex-leader of this country) , they still keep the "French Street" name...
For anyone interested in art and "old stones", what a perfect report!

Thanks a ton!

frankmu Jan 7, 2018 4:01 pm

Thanks for the amazing TR! As I finished the report, my thought was “how does he top this?” Safe travels !

miuk Jan 7, 2018 4:46 pm

Wow! Just amazing that you pulled off such a trip. Really an eye opener for me when comparing it Libya to the scenes from the "13hrs Benghazi" movie

worldtraveller73 Jan 7, 2018 5:17 pm

Another big WOW!! Terrific photos.

I almost wish and think that you should be travelling with Soft Body Armour but that may present some challenges with the customs and immigration authorities.

Travel safe!!

Stefan Sip Jan 7, 2018 8:57 pm

Hi Daniel,

Thank you for another good TR. How do you compare Algeria and Libya in terms of places of interests and overall attractions?

Thanks

Many thanks, hauteboy:). Yes, always great to travel with company and I guess more hassle to kidnap two of us as well:D. Looking forward to your Kenya adventure too.

Travel safe.

Thanks, Traveller2:). Actually looking forward to a more 'normal' and safer travel destination for a change now:).

Haha:)! Yes, the NZ passport has the advantage of being relatively powerful, but also relatively benign:).

Many thanks, flying_blue_white_red:). Yes, the bombing of Libya by NATO had some short term gains, but the long term instability seems to be a very high price though.

Thanks, frankmu:). Just back from a trip to Baghdad and it was actually probably safer than Tripoli:).

Cheers, miuk:). Yes, there was recent fighting in Sabratha, about 80k's west of Tripoli, when we were there so parts of the country still seem to be pretty dangerous.

Thanks, Stefan Sip:). I haven't spent much time in both countries, but Libya didn't seem to have the same heavy police presence as Algeria. Better for security I guess, but more hassle with taking photo's as a tourist and checkpoints etc.

Wow, what an Amazing TR. Thank you so much. I always get nervous regarding safety and am impressed by your patience and ability to travel so safely.

Wow you managed to see quite a lot for a three-day trip. Thank you for a wonderful TR.

Looks like you were kept busy for those 3 days. Fantastic photos as usual!

Thanks, gaobest:). There is probably a good dose of luck with regard to safety and travel. Last month I was at Erta Ale in Ethiopia and two days after I left a German tourist was shot and killed .

Fantastic trip report, thank you for taking the time. Your pictures speak more than words could. Also took a little bit too much time the last few days reading through some your previous escapades. Glad to see that I'm not the only one drawn to the less traveled and more fascinating places - just need to borrow a little bit of your fearlessness. Given your frequent travels through less conventional places, your family / friends must be more used to it by now, but how did you handle their concern/worries when you first started exploring more off the beaten path / conventionally considered dangerous places?

camsean Jan 12, 2018 2:52 am

Thanks for another great TR.

I would love to go to Leptis Magna, but that is ine expensive visa.

Many thanks, lds89:). I save my parents a bit of stress by not telling then until after I am safely back. A bit of a surprise though when they get a email with the subject 'Pics from Baghdad':D. Makes it easier when I'm on the other side of the world to keep it secret. I tell my significant other and friends about upcoming trips, but they are immune to the 'danger factor' now after all my travels.

Thank you, camsean:). Yes, the visa is a bit of a PITA. Don't think it will change anytime soon though:(.

@DanielW, Thanks for the picture-perfect trip report. Lots of memories. Lived in Tripoli ~1989-93 (I was a young lad back then) and even with the day-to-day challenges of foreigners living in Libya even back then...I have some of my life's fondest memories from my time spent in Libya. ^

Thanks for sharing.

Many thanks, CodeAdam10:). We passed through an old neighbourhood where expat families used to live. Very interesting to know that there used to be a time when western families used to live and work in Tripoli in relative safety.

Always enjoy reading your Trip Reports, especially to places that are a little more "obscure" in today's world climate. Thanks for sharing ^

Than you, WesternCDN:). Next TR will be a little more conventional but still a lot of fun, a few days in Hong Kong.

Thank you, aquamarinesteph:). One of my few 'dangerous' places to visit so was slightly sad at the end too:D.

I've taken a break from this forum for awhile and am just catching up on your trip reports.

Every report you publish is amazing, but I just love the one. Like I want to pack my bags and go tonight. Thanks so much for this!

Question: how was internet access in Libya?

Question: how was internet access in Libya?

Many thanks, MatthewLAX:). Libya had been on my list for a while, so was great to finally visit. Seemed relatively 'normal' too, despite the governance / militia issues.

Internet was pretty good at our hotel. Not sure if it was fast enough for Youtube/Netflix, but was perfectly fine for web browsing, social media etc.

anonimous Jun 15, 2022 11:33 am

May I ask which Libyan travel agency has organized this tour and visa?

theshaun Jun 16, 2022 9:13 pm

Have not seen DanielW around here for a while. Hope all is well.
