Passenger removed from plane: United BusinessFirst IAH-AMS, diverted to EWR
Well, I would like to publish my trip report, flying United International Business Class from Houston, Texas to Amsterdam, Netherlands.
You may call the Business Class either BusinessFirst or Polaris Business. Since it is only a marketing name, the "naming" should not matter much. At departure in Houston were shown an on-time arrival into Amsterdam Schiphol. However, due to an unruly passenger, the captain made a last-minute decision to abandon the transatlantic crossing and divert back to Newark. At the captain's decision point were almost reaching the border between the US and Canada. The United App showed that everything was allright, we even shooting for an early arrival: https://picload.org/image/rcaplici/0...er-removed.jpg Only a couple of hours later that same flight was assigned a different destination (Old: Amsterdam -> New: Newark): https://picload.org/image/rcapcral/4...er-removed.jpg Here are some meta info about the flight: Flight: United Airlines UA 20 Departure from: Houston George Bush Intercontinental Airport, Terminal E, IAH, Texas Take off from: Runway 15L, length 3,658 m / 12,002 ft Arrival into: Newark Liberty International Airport, EWR, Terminal C, New Jersey Landing on: Runway 4R, length 3,048 m / 10,000 ft Original destination: Amsterdam Schiphol Airport, Netherlands Distance: 1,400 miles / 2,253 km Duration: 4 hours and 30 minutes Travel Class: International Polaris Business (BusinessFirst) Lounges at IAH: United Club Terminal E Passenger load: approx. 80% Seat: 4A Pitch: 78 inches Width: 23 inches Plane: Boeing 777-200ER Registration: N57016 Tail No: #3016 Delivered to Continental Airlines: May 2000 Engines: 2 x General Electric GE90-92B Take-Off Thrust: 91,999 lbf each After some good days down with lots of heat and thunderstorms in Texas, it's time to go back to Europe: https://picload.org/image/rcapccrl/6...er-removed.jpg Although I hate driving in the EU, the US (and Canada) is the only country where I enjoy driving: Our Dodge rental car: https://picload.org/image/rcapccrw/6...er-removed.jpg At Houston George Bush Intercontinental Airport, we've passed TSA at the International Terminal D: https://picload.org/image/rcapcrca/5...er-removed.jpg Airside: Lufthansa German Airlines Airbus A380-800 to Frankfurt: https://picload.org/image/rcapcrcr/5...er-removed.jpg Another beauty making its way to Amsterdam Schiphol: https://picload.org/image/rcapccgi/6...er-removed.jpg Walking over to United Terminal E: https://picload.org/image/rcapccrr/6...er-removed.jpg Our United flight to Amsterdam at the departure board: https://picload.org/image/rcapcrli/5...er-removed.jpg United Club at Terminal E (I've read it will be closed soon due to refurbishment): https://picload.org/image/rcapcrll/5...er-removed.jpg Food spread is allright (it could be worse for an US-based lounge): https://picload.org/image/rcapcrcl/6...er-removed.jpg https://picload.org/image/rcapcrlw/5...er-removed.jpg I've decided to take a shower before the flight: https://picload.org/image/rcapliaa/0...er-removed.jpg Near the boarding gate for our flight to Amsterdam - Gate E20: https://picload.org/image/rcaplial/0...er-removed.jpg https://picload.org/image/rcapliaw/0...er-removed.jpg United Boeing 777-200ER (ex-Continental Airlines bird); N57016 will fly us across the pond tonight: https://picload.org/image/rcapliai/0...er-removed.jpg United Economy cabin: https://picload.org/image/rcapliol/1...er-removed.jpg United BusinessFirst cabin (now rebranded as Polaris Business) in the ex-Continental Boeing 777-200ER; Pitch is 78 inches and width is 23 inches; Seat 4A will be mine for tonight: https://picload.org/image/rcapcrla/5...er-removed.jpg https://picload.org/image/rcaplior/0...er-removed.jpg https://picload.org/image/rcapliow/1...er-removed.jpg Wingview from the ground: https://picload.org/image/rcaplioa/0...er-removed.jpg https://picload.org/image/rcaplioi/1...er-removed.jpg Taxiing towards Houston Runway 15L: https://picload.org/image/rcaplilr/1...er-removed.jpg This mighty General Electric GE90-92B engine, which each can produce a TOGA take off thrust up to 91,999 lbf: Taking off from Runway 15L towards the south: https://picload.org/image/rcaplill/1...er-removed.jpg Making an immediate 220 degree turn: https://picload.org/image/rcaplili/1...er-removed.jpg https://picload.org/image/rcaplicr/1...er-removed.jpg Downtown Houston: https://picload.org/image/rcaplilw/1...er-removed.jpg Trekking up towards the Northeast (the sun is hitting my windows): https://picload.org/image/rcaplica/1...er-removed.jpg Wingview back from Economy (while taking this shot, I was noticing that the three exit row seats were totally empty, which is strange; Moreover, two of the seats were wet; only later into the flight I got an explanation for that): https://picload.org/image/rcaplicl/2...er-removed.jpg United Dinner Service in International Business Class: https://picload.org/image/rcaplwpi/2...er-removed.jpg Appetizer: https://picload.org/image/rcaplwpw/2...er-removed.jpg Salad: https://picload.org/image/rcaplwlr/2...er-removed.jpg Main course (some pork'ish stuff): https://picload.org/image/rcaplwli/2...er-removed.jpg Icecream (I've declined the cheese, because I felt stuffed and uncomfortable. A reserve captain was making lots of phone calls with company. Delta over at JFK calculated a flight time of 6 hours and 58 minutes for tonight. Would that be ok to try to do the transatlantic crossing? https://picload.org/image/rcapcraw/4...er-removed.jpg Later on the crew decided to try the crossing tonight, citing the fact that the Polar Jetstream is aligned perfectly west-to-east between the Northeast and Europe. Talking about "legal". I was having some questions whether we would have clear US immigration, if the flight gets cancelled at the end. Well, I've noticed that a lot of people from United (cabin crew, UA EWR management folks and some people without any uniform, probably UA standby travellers) were constantly entering and exiting the airplane. So I don't think they had to pass US immigration. https://picload.org/image/rcapcroa/4...er-removed.jpg The unruly passenger was removed by the Port Authority police approx. 30 minutes, after we arrived at the gate. Since the situation unfolded in Economy, I cannot tell whether any sort of violence or removal by force happened there. The cabin crew did not want to talk about it. However, it transpired that a lady passenger got abusive with the cabin crew during cabin service while in flight. That would explain the wet and empty exit rows seats in the back. Three officers of the Port Authority Police were escorting the female passenger out. Of course, I did not take any photos. The passenger, however, appeared calm. About 30 minutes after the removal, the police and the passenger appeared downstairs at the police cars. Maybe the passenger had to go through immigration, I am not sure. They drove off shortly after. https://picload.org/image/rcapcror/4...er-removed.jpg https://picload.org/image/rcapcroi/4...er-removed.jpg https://picload.org/image/rcapcrow/5...er-removed.jpg https://picload.org/image/rcapcrlr/5...er-removed.jpg The details of my continueing journey to Amsterdam Schiphol will be published, soon. Wow, sad about diversion. But otherwise a great TR. Look forward to the EWR to AMS part
|
Great trip report so far thanks! So your time at EWR was 2.5 hours before pushback again? Was the aircraft re-catered?

Nothing I need on my next flight....
|
In case anyone's wondering, this happened September 2016. Here's a local news story from Houston:

omg!
Yes, this was the woman, who was unruly. |
I don't believe you'd have to clear US immigration. I flew back to miami as one of the pilot got sick one hour after departure and we went out of the plane and free to walk in the terminal or even leave the airport.
|
Often1 has explained the immigration situation quite well in another thread.

A diversion is never a pleasant experience,
However thankfully this one was just for an unruly passenger. Better she was removed at Newark than continue to Amsterdam and make a nuisance over the ocean where there are not options. Seems like it was handled by United pretty well, which is unusual for United these days. |
This is not Polaris. This is pre-Polaris. I would update title.

Thank your for reading my report.
I enjoyed your report otherwise and thank you for taking the time to write it up. |
Nice report. New York was once known as New Amsterdam. Perhaps the unruly passenger thought she was going to New Ansterdam and got upset when she saw the plane going beyond New York.
|
Maybe, the lady didn't want to leave the United States - for whatever reason.
I don't know how the US CBP handles deported passengers (those who are refused and turned back at the airport border). These passenger may become unruly and force the plane to land back on US soil. |
Yes, it does matter. It implies time. Polaris did not exist when you flew. Nice trip report by the way. |
