Amsterdam - Houston United Economy Plus in ex-"Peter Max" Boeing 777-200ER

Amsterdam - Houston United Economy Plus in ex-"Peter Max" Boeing 777-200ER (nice Greenland pics + Texas thunderstorms)

Last autumn I was flying to Texas - from the North Sea Coast of The Hague to the Gulf of Mexico Coast of Galveston, Texas.
I've chosen the United Boeing 777-200ER from Amsterdam Schiphol to Houston Intercontinental.
UA Star Alliance Gold pax get the chance to choose an Economy Plus seat for free after booking.
The lounge situation at Amsterdam for pax on Star Alliance flights is dreadfull.
From my personal experience, I have never encountered a full United flight from AMS (its my third out of AMS with UA - once to IAD on a 772, once to IAH on a 767-400,
and now again to IAH on a 77E). The same holds true now. I didn't have a seat neighbour.
This time United assigned a pmCO Boeing 777-200ER to this route. N77014 flew me over the Atlantic. The N77014 bird was painted with the NYC 2000 Peter Max livery. Sadely, that livery was removed in 2007.
The United crew was IAH-based and quite senior. I found the female FA's quite pleasant. The male FA's kept quite a distant to their pax.

This time I got lucky and our routing would take us over the Southern tip of Greenland - and the sun was shining over Greenland.

Before approaching Houston we had take some circles, because East Texas was covered by lots of thunderstorm cells.

The food on UA seems to have improved. I love the Economy + seating. I only paid 5 years ago less than $100 extra.

I guess you got lucky, as most of my flights on UA from AMS have been packed (except for my AMS-IAH flight last year on the day before thanksgiving, which only had about 30 pax in Y :))

Nice photos in and over Amsterdam, Greenland and in the Houston area. The sunset (I am assuming) photo was really nice.

Thanks!!

I bet it is all relative. But that said, as a vegetarian, I have definitely noticed that Indian vegetarian has traveled much more than it had two or three decades ago. Still remember eating what to me amounted to be grass (cattlefeed for cattle class?!) back in those days when I also used to be an involuntary captive smoker as well! Now, even on trans-Pacific and trans-Atlantic legs, I've had rice and some kind of curry when requesting vegetarian food!

Thanks for the great report, this was a real pleasure to read. The photos really made it!

UA's Economy Plus was at one point a decent value proposition but they increased the prices due to its popularity so now it isn't anymore as the total sum now often encroaches on actual Premium Economy prices.

I love the photos of the North. It always amazes me on those TATL flights that you're looking at this vast and interesting landscape of valleys, mountains, water..and yet in your view which encompasses a huge area of land there's likely few if any people (when over Greenland's and Labrador's interior).

Agremeister Jan 27, 2017 3:49 am

United don't look half bad these days.

Now, wether that's due to them improving or everyone else declining is another question! :D

warakorn Feb 2, 2017 3:22 am

Now, wether that's due to them improving or everyone else declining is another question!
Well, you still have free seat selection in all booking classes on TATL flights. Something other airlines lack (because they either charge for it; or it is technically not possible).
