Underground In New Zealand
After my recent visit to Japan, I headed back to my home country of New Zealand to catch up with family & friends.
I also got to visit Waitomo for a fun day of caving:). Paying utmost attention for the safety briefing before the abseil down. http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7339/1...0da76b37_o.jpg Down into the abyss:). At ~100metres it is the world's deepest commercial cave abseil. http://farm4.staticflickr.com/3774/1...3f2e9e89_o.jpg Only one hand:). http://farm4.staticflickr.com/3826/1...4266922d_o.jpg My sis bought me the trip for a birthday present. http://farm4.staticflickr.com/3817/1...e7502bea_o.jpg Into the middle of the earth:). http://farm4.staticflickr.com/3700/1...9be32dda_o.jpg From left, Cassandra from California, me, my sister Victoria, and hubby Steve. http://farm3.staticflickr.com/2848/1...62b56a52_o.jpg Almost at the bottom of the descent. http://farm3.staticflickr.com/2812/1...d6275482_o.jpg Ready for landing. http://farm4.staticflickr.com/3789/1...c9bcf0b0_o.jpg Sandwiches & Muffins for lunch before heading into the dark. http://farm4.staticflickr.com/3682/1...f7a52463_o.jpg My 'Rocky' pose:D. http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7176/1...38ea15a3_o.jpg Jumping in the deep end:)! http://farm4.staticflickr.com/3688/1...6336938a_o.jpg Clambering up the two rocks faces. Took a bit of co-ordination, especially wearing gumboots:)! http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7319/1...cebeaa73_o.jpg Not for the claustrophobic:)! http://farm4.staticflickr.com/3800/1...33261dd9_o.jpg Luckily the water level wasn't too high after recents rains. http://farm4.staticflickr.com/3749/1...3ef0f0d7_o.jpg Steve squeezing his 6 foot 4 frame through. http://farm4.staticflickr.com/3709/1...39a99914_o.jpg Glow worms:). http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7067/1...fbd31642_o.jpg At the end after 7 hours underground! http://farm4.staticflickr.com/3790/1...8dfc7441_o.jpg And back to the surface:). http://farm3.staticflickr.com/2808/1...527a5fda_o.jpg At Auckland Airport, about to board the EK A380 for the flight back to Dubai:). https://farm3.staticflickr.com/2855/...78689906_o.jpg |
Wow! The caving looks amazing, but definitely not for someone with claustrophobia. :D
Those pictures of you guys squeezing through are terrifying! I'm not brave enough for that! As usual absolutely stunning pictures.
No Thanks. I'm Good. ;)
WOW....those are pretty awesome photos! Compared to those cramped caves, 10 abreast on a EK 777 doesn't seem so bad...
Sensational pics! What a great experience!
Looks amazing!
Thanks, guys:). Being in the dark with only a headlamp deep underground was actually quite calming, just as long as you didn't get lost from everyone else though:).
They've had an 87 year old and a blind person down there, as well as a paraplegic doing the abseil, so no one has any excuses:)!

Did this EXACT same thing in 2011. What fun. Did fly F on the A380 out of AKL after ;)
Nice photos - looks like you guys had a blast.
I'm guessing you didn't bring the DSLR for this? ;) |

People do this for fun?
I have two questions about your seven hour trip to the cave:
1) you know...what did you do about....seven hours is a long time... 2) how did you get up? |
| All times are GMT -6. The time now is 5:44 am. |
